I think the lad is happy here, and he knows that he's one of our star names and to be fair next season will be one hell of a season. The league has never looked as good as it does now, so it's a great test for him and I'm glad we're in a position to dictate what happens. That, IMO, is more than enough proof that we are financially very sound.

I initially thought he would go but now I think he will stay at least one more season. I don't think anyone will meet Cortese's asking price, and he won't back down.

Cortese has shown no fear of challenging tradition football notions. The accepted theory nowadays is 'if the footballer wants to go he will go', Cortese wont think that for a second. He will go when SFC want him to and for a price SFC want - it's as simple as that.

From what i heard Arsenal offered the £12m, £6m now the rest after apperances. And Cortese said if they want him they'd have to pay it all, or go away!! ;)

If we could keep hold of Chamberlain it would be a massive statement of intent. He is without doubt one of the best young talents in English football and he is only going to get better.

He is such an exciting player to watch and can produce that bit of magic to help us back to the premier league. Fonte, Lallana, Lambert, Cork and Chamberlain would walk into almost any team in this league along with a few others in my opinion.

This current squad will surprise a lot of people in this league and the momentum and winning mentality combined with the buzz about the club at the moment should see us challenging in the top 6.

Ever since I can remember other clubs have always thought they can just help themselves to our best players and it has really hurt in the past as these players have been sold.

I applaud cortese for throwing the fax offer straight in the bin in January and refusing to sell. If he can manage to keep hold of him even for another season the message that would send to our supporters and to other clubs would be loud and clear.

The value of Chamberlain is almost certain to increase over time as I firmly believe he will continue to improve and become an even better player as he develops. If the worst does happen at some stage and we sell him the price is likely to be more than it is now maybe a lot more.

It will be sad if we ever do have to sell Chamberlain but the blow will be softened if at that point he has helped put us back in the premier league.

Come on Alex please stay with us, surely helping a team to another promotion and the buzz of that has got to be better than playing for Arsenal reserves. If you have decided you want to move to a so called bigger club do it in a year or two when you have shown your talent here week in week out and can walk into another clubs first team and not get lost as just another squad player.

We need to make sure Oxo scores some local Southampton poontang, that'd make him stay.

(Though natch, Mel Slade did bugger all in keeping Theo here, so this woman must be tied to her mother's apron strings...)

Good post.

I just hope in the next 2/3 weeks the situation remains the same.

Forget Chambo leaving, as he's not going anywhere till next season(maybe). And thats from the horses mouth so to speak!! :)

That was yesterday...it may be true now, but tomorrow is another day ...

Oh... I long for the days when the NOTW printed gossip that you knew was a load of sh*t, where do these journos get their info?

My guess is they have a big hat in the editorial room and take their pick for a new rumour to exploit...

What we really don't want is a grumpy player afraid to get stuck in or put himself about because he's afraid of getting injured this year and losing his chance to play in the Prem. It'll be a tough one for Nige to handle but I reckon he's up to the task.

Well he failed miserably with Puncheon but lets home he does better with Alex if he is still with us this season

That's taken from the Sun, which appears to have got it from the Mirror since it contains some identical phrases, and as we know the Mirror has in the past 'authoritatively' reported that he had already signed for Arsenal, most recently saying he would definitely be unveiled as an Arsenal player on July 1st for example.

All these papers just feed on each other's rumours. Notice the way the Sun's report implies, but doesn't quite say, that he's given his first interview exclusively to them, yet contain identical phrases to what was in the Mirror a few days before. He may or may not leave soon, I haven't the faintest idea, but either way I am damn certain I do not believe these tabloid reporters actually really know anything more than the rest of us. They just keep writing rubbish they've got from each other, then occasionally one of them happens to be right -- in the same way as a stopped clock is right twice a day -- and then they claim success, ignoring the hundreds of times they got it wrong.

For God's sake --- the Sun. Does anyone really still believe any Murdoch paper?

Punch is not even a similar case. He is impossible to deal with and is nothing but a disruption his whole life. I think even Alex Ferguson would have washed his hands of him (if he was actually good enough to play at that level).

Could it just be that the father wants him to cash in, while it's not that important to the player who probably wants to play first team football not be back in the reserves/U18s no matter where it is. A lot of previous quotes/articles show the father/agent? appears keen/desperate for the move but all the chance contacts with the boy show a different focus.
