hamster Posted 17 July, 2011 Posted 17 July, 2011 What is an effective method for dealing with fleas on dogs please? We have 4.
Dazza82 Posted 17 July, 2011 Posted 17 July, 2011 Frontline or Advocate Advocate also helps against mange
hamster Posted 17 July, 2011 Author Posted 17 July, 2011 Frontline? Isn't that a bit timi. Our little pug Theo ( yep, Walcott) is losing his fur, poor chap. Four fleas! Brilliant, glad we got that one out of the way early on. Anyone heard 9f using Keyed Fluid?
camdijk Posted 17 July, 2011 Posted 17 July, 2011 We use Stronghold, only available from vets. It has the added advantage of dealing with earmites as well.
1976_Child Posted 17 July, 2011 Posted 17 July, 2011 I used Stronghold on the whippets. Worked ok. Holding the darn hounds still while I applied it was next to impossible. Remember those cartoons where the legs keep moving at high speed but the roadrunner doesn't go anywhere? Whippet the Younger nearly scratched a hole to Australia!! Whippet the Older was a bit more chilled.
HK_Phoey Posted 18 July, 2011 Posted 18 July, 2011 We have been using Frontline on our two Siberian Huskys for years, no problems. Also seems to keep the ticks away as well.

Guest Dark Sotonic Mills Posted 18 July, 2011 Posted 18 July, 2011 One word... Advocate Just what the hell a QC is going to be able to do about dog fleas is anyone's guess. Myself I'd take them to the vet but, hey ho...

bridge too far Posted 18 July, 2011 Posted 18 July, 2011 One word... Advocate Isn't that a Dutch drink?
Doctoroncall Posted 18 July, 2011 Posted 18 July, 2011 Isn't that a Dutch drink? That'll be Advocaat... easy mistake though.

Essruu Posted 18 July, 2011 Posted 18 July, 2011 kill the dog. What a stupid suggestion. If dog owners killed their dogs, how would they be able to maintain that foul dog smell in their homes?
Crispypie Posted 18 July, 2011 Posted 18 July, 2011 What a stupid suggestion. If dog owners killed their dogs, how would they be able to maintain that foul dog smell in their homes? My Nan managed it!
hamster Posted 18 July, 2011 Author Posted 18 July, 2011 Thing is, there are 4 dogs in the smelly house so Vet's and Frontline etc are gonna cost a bome. I was just wondering if there are any more economic methods, I hear that tea tree oil works quite well. Non dog people I would not expect to understand the joy that they bring...aprt from the fleas and the smell of course.
Al de Man Posted 19 July, 2011 Posted 19 July, 2011 Our cats had a terrible infestation of fleas because they'd became resistant to Frontline. We tried Advantage and it cleared up in a matter of days.

Essruu Posted 19 July, 2011 Posted 19 July, 2011 Non dog people I would not expect to understand the joy that they bring...aprt from the fleas and the smell of course. Having a massive sh1t every morning brings me joy... but I wouldn't keep it in the house.
Dog Posted 19 July, 2011 Posted 19 July, 2011 What a stupid suggestion. If dog owners killed their dogs, how would they be able to maintain that foul dog smell in their homes? Urinate daily on the sofa, and walk around your house allday with your trousers and pants around your ankles after not wiping your bum properly.

scotty Posted 19 July, 2011 Posted 19 July, 2011 Program eliminates the little f*ckers completely. (The fleas, not the dogs.) Unlike the other treatments mentioned which kill some or most of the fleas actually on the dogs, it sterilises any flea that feeds on the treated dog, thereby sidestepping the need to treat the carpets/bedding/sofas/ etc as well. The active bit is lufeneron, which interferes with the material the flea uses to hatch, it works brilliantly. Not cheap, but very effective indeed. Its given monthly as a tablet on a full stomach and isnt poisonous as such, or irritating to the hound. We tried loads of products over the last 30 years, this is the only permanent solution Ive found. Theres a feline version as well.
