John B Posted 18 July, 2011 Share Posted 18 July, 2011 define not succeed..? Continue the momentum from last season so that the team will be capable of challenging for promotion in the following season
Colinjb Posted 18 July, 2011 Share Posted 18 July, 2011 define not succeed..? Anything short of automatic promotion will be seen as failure by some. A season of mid-table safety would however be a great foundation to have going forward, ours is after all a five year plan, not five month. Norwich set a stunning precedent last season but they are the exception, not the norm. It would be great to match their achievement but a more humble target would not be a failure, it would be a sign of progress.
The9 Posted 18 July, 2011 Share Posted 18 July, 2011 (edited) I'd much rather we were successful than had my doubts about Adkins proven correct to be honest. That way 25,000 of us get to be happy rather than just a couple. Anything above 8th is a success for me this season, I think we were a 10th-14th side in May, Cork takes us up to the brink of play-off contention - one of those sides that's always just outside the play-off spots with an outside chance who ends up about 10pts outside the playoffs (basically about where we were in Lge 1 in 2009/10 after the points deduction). Of course in order to finish in around 8th our fans are going to have to get used to losing more games to genuinely better sides, which is never something that goes down well on here. So 8th will see a whole swathe of "Adkins Out"s, when actually they should be saying "we're not far away, let's see what happens next season". I'd also like to revise my Brighton relegation threatened prediction in light of a couple of their recent signings, they're now looking more like a mid-table side, but I still think we'll finish ahead of them. Fowllyd Posted 18 July, 2011 Share Posted 18 July, 2011 I'm waiting for this season to evaluate how Nige performs, he's never finished above mid-table in this division, and though things have been good so far the jury's well and truly out on if he can make us challengers in the Championship. My main concern when we signed him was that he had League One sussed but hadn't achieved much above that level, and I wasn't sure he'd be able to attract the players of the right quality to Saints. We shall see, he's done well with Cork but there's a limit to the number of good quality players he's had the chance to influence from being involved with them previously. The voice of reason,at last. I think most on here would agree that The9's post is entirely reasonable. Perhaps you should compare it to a few of yours, then you might stand a chance of seeing why many don't regard them in anything like the same light. Giordano Posted 18 July, 2011 Author Share Posted 18 July, 2011 OS gives a different slant...suggests Saints will be attempting to retain possession of the ball lots in the Championship...NOT that our Championship opponents cannot retain possession of the ball. Anyone else clear if he said "like" or "unlike" in that Saintsplayer interview? Im still unsure. IF its unlike, which is what i thought he said, It might be fair to say Nigel is expecting a rerun of our Div 1 season. IF its like then we will have a different season. I'm sure the Championship clubs are fairly clear on how we play ie passing / possession play by default. I recall NA trying to encourage teams to attack us a bit more at times last year in the prematch build ups as part of the pyscho-ops part of his job but it would be interesting to see of the clubs we face this season which could be categorised as predominantly "passing/possession" teams and which could be regarded as predominantly more direct...and then guess how he tries to get them to change their tactics against us.. Dig Dig Posted 18 July, 2011 Share Posted 18 July, 2011 Poor old nigel. Being made to jump through hoop after hoop before the sceptics believe. Last season it was "lets just see if he can get us promoted". Now it's "last season was easy, next season is the real test". What about after that? "ah but he's unproved in the premiership etc etc". Window Cleaner Posted 18 July, 2011 Share Posted 18 July, 2011 Thinking about it though, you'd think that we might like to win the MLMC wouldn't you, whether we'll be able to do that by playing Doble,Reeves and Forecast against either Werder or Bilbao is sort of tenuous. If we want to experiment and give everybody on the roster game time fair enough, play 2 teams against Eastleigh or something like that, but as for the MLMC well .......WIFM. Giordano Posted 18 July, 2011 Author Share Posted 18 July, 2011 Im not having a pop at NA in case thats how it might appear. This thread has seemed to take a little bit of a detour. I was just interested in knowing if Nige thinks its gonna be plus ca change this season and if he has a relatively low impression of the technical abilities of championship teams versus his Saints players. He managed a Championship team before so he is as entitled to an informed opinion as anyone. FWIW I like him and I'd rather him than an old fashioned type. I especially like that he tries to bring sport science into the building. :-)
Saint Charlie Posted 18 July, 2011 Share Posted 18 July, 2011 He certainly said "unlike Championship teams" on Saints Player. To be fair, it is true, Bilbao and Bremen will keep the ball better than teams we will play. Plus, he has managed in that league recently so he knows. Also, Wenger was praising those GPS things the players wear in training so its nice to know we are up with that kind of thing.
Fan The Flames Posted 18 July, 2011 Share Posted 18 July, 2011 I am trying to add some balance. In my post i have exactly that,a balanced opinion of Adkins....i am yet to be convinced that he has what it takes when under pressure as he has not faced any yet. When that time comes,in the face of adversity, that will be a true test of strength, character and managerial capabilities. Many have decided already that he is be all and end all.Yet he has not been tested one iota. Mate you are the white to the other peoples black. You only add balnce by being at the other end of the scale to those that you claim fawn, but you are not balanced in yourself. I think NA was tested last season, there was a point 3/4 the way through where we could have faded away (which would have been a crime but nevertheless it could have happened), we could have limped on into the playoffs and yet we stormed the last 1/4 of the season. As a Saints fan I give the people at the club the benefit of the doubt until they prove otherwise, we got promoted three points of the leaders, he has built a good team spirit and the way he talks is slightly amusing to some. So at the moment not too much to knock him for I would have thought.

I thought you were waiting until the end of this season to evaluate him, less then ten posts on and you have formed your opinion, you have doubts he can do it. You can only evaluate with the evidence before you and at the moment the evidence is mainly good, it doesn't mean you can't change your mind if the evidence changes.
