Premier League Youth

As far as Championship teams go we have top class training facilities and a fantastic record for developing young talent.

With that in mind i'd have thought we'd have little trouble in convincing some of the premier league big boys in sending a youngster out on loan to us for a season.

May well be that conversations have taken place, but i certainly think its something we should be exploring.

Any thoughts?

We are building a team for the premier league and then the champions league, signing players on loan is not the answer. We should be looking at tapping these players up to buy into the vision now. The only young striker l can see who would add anything to us is Macheda from Manchester United.

Funnily enough i was thinking of Macheda.

Im just thinking with the sort of money being touted around for the likes of Maynard and Sharp, arent we better off waiting for the right player rather than panic buying. A season long loan could be a good option.

He does well for us on FIFA

Compared to other clubs in League 1 we made very little use of the loan system last season. Given our current squad size and what's been said publicly by the manager and chairman I doubt if we'll be bringing in more than one or two on loan at most.

Man u have 6 strikers on their books but none of them will drop down to the NPC!!!

Given that in recent years Utd have loaned out Gabriel Obertan to Leyton Orient, Danny Welbeck to Preston and Tom Cleverley to Watford and Leicester, its not inconceivable that they will look to offload one of their kids on loan again. Granted, not Macheda or Diouf, but the top sides can be a very good source of loan material. Look at Henri Lansbury also from Arsenal.

Is it not the plan to give first team opportunities to our own academy prospects rather than other clubs? I'm pretty sure that's why saints don't look at this. How can we bring talent through from our own academy if we are doing it for Uniteds or Arsenals.

I think we will see more of Reeves, Doble, Dean et al in our match day squads next season.

If the quality is there in our own ranks then yes, it should be encouraged. Is it there though? We sent Joseph Mills out on loan, and he was one of the better prospects. Gobern very, very rarely got a look in and now has been released. AOC right now is the only one worth a spot. The others may get given their chances, but if they're not up to it there's no harm in taking other good players from clubs.

True, but at the moment there are maybe 3 or 4 of our own on the verge of the squad. They all need to get their chance, so I think NA will want to see what develops. If we bring some premier league kid in on a short term loan, it maybe blocks the chance of finding out if one of our own can hack it.

My feeling is that's what NC/NA plan for the academy. The risk is of course, that you never really know if they are good enough until they get their chance.

I think Mellis was our last loan of a youngster and that must have been almost 2 years ago. If I had to bet, I would say no loans of this kind any time soon.

There's an argument of course that if we hadn't taken Cork on loan he wouldn't have signed permanently now, but I guess you'd have to ask him about that, it didn't help Watford, Scvnthorpe or Burnley.

Gobern wasn't 'released', his contract was up, we offered him a new one which he declined and then signed for someone else. He figured more prominently in the second half of the season, to some probably more than his skill levels demanded. But the manager and therefore the club thought that he could do a job for us and his leaving should not be used as a stick to beat SFC with.

Macheda will either stay at United and get games in the league this year or go to a Serie A club and make a name for himself over there. United would be unlikley to loan him out to the championship unless he needs games if he gets injured and has a spell out. I saw the highlets of Unt in a pre season friendly in the US and he scored 2 goals and Alex said he had a big future and was hopeful he would progress at United. I would love to be proved wrong but think we should aim our sights at players we can develop into the finished article. Our scouting system is a lot better so I am hopeful in the next 18 months we will start to see the fruit of this!

I didn't mean on loan i meant permanent signings. Hernandez looks a good prospect as well, I definitely consider a bid for him if i was nige.

They won't be selling Hernandez, he's their next star. They bought him on the cheap for £6mil before the world cup as he was basically unknown in the UK.

Money talks, offer them enough and he's ours. He'd be up for it as well, i know for a fact he'd love to secure his dream move to Southampton anyway, he might even go on strike to join us, we all know how stubborn these South Americans can be.

Geez, when did you become so cynical? Please give it a rest.

Yes NC has a vision for the club and talked about Premier League and Champions League, doesnt mean that all Saints fans will buy into that does it.

Every other thread has you talking about Saints being a mighty club et al that everyone would love to join. We get it ok.

We are a mighty club. There is no place for that sort of negativity on here thank you.
