Other possibilities for a new striker.

I heard a rumour from a friend who is in Switzerland that we had bid £80m for David Villa accepted and that he had turned us down as Nige wouldn't gurantee him a first team spot. My source wide of the mark though and it was actually an £80m bid for Aston Villa as we are looking to use them as a feeder club. The bid was accepted but the deal broke down as Villa felt that they weren't worthy of being a feeder club to a club of our stature.

Meh

Barnard and Guly will have good seasons, Maynard deal is not dead but would be pricey.

I expect we will get someone from abroad and I fully expect us to over rely on the tortoise that is Lambert before its too late.

Other than that I don't know. Give it time, we have a decent squad apart from a striker and a new brick ****house of a CB. Cork went a long way to appease me of our Midfield issues. (bye bye Hammond)

Don't be so fecking stupid boy, there is no way he could adapt to the championship.

Connolly would easily outscore him.

Is that the tortoise who has scored over 50 goals in his first 2 seasons for us and over 30 assists?

Funny I heard on the ever-reliable UI that nothing really happened over the past two years and we're getting matt paterson and marek saganowski back. Also rumours that we're trying to coax joe tessem out of a retirement as a converted centre-forward. Supposedly the Swiss have got cold feet - colder than Heidi going commando up Mont Blanc.

You have shown total disregard for the importance of... The WINK! Do you realise that without that WINK, you could be tossed aside into the pits that no poster has managed to claw his way out of since the very first emoticon established itself on a forums shores. You coulda be left to sit and rot for eternity without but a single thought for your soul. Not even a mention be of thy name, for every man will dismiss thy mere mention of your past existence, for displaying such disrespect to thy virtual world.

I would give nothing short of everything to spare you of your destiny and forewarn you of what awaits those who fall short with displays of such mere ignorance, but I'm afraid, for you, it's too late.

May god have mercy on your soul.

They are some very good strikers in the french leagues, notably those that play for the lower league clubs of the 1st division and in the top club in the second division. I m sure that they would not cost as expensive as the prices quoted for Maynard and Sharp.

I would imagine there are a few targets lined up that have been identified by our scouting network outside of the UK. Realistically I don't think there are all that many players in this division or the divisions below that will add something better to what we already have.

Wish we'd signed Johan Voskamp. Scored today for Slask Wroclaw against Dundee United. I first heard of him when he was playing for Sparta Rotterdam, has a phenomenal goalscoring record, albeit in Holland. Once scored eight goals on his debut. For Sparta he scored 29 goals in 31 games, at Helmond 22 in 34.

Something like that please!

Am keen on a pacey c.£3m striker.

But I might lean to stick rather than twist.

Lambert, Connolly (fit?), Barnard (at liberty?) and Guly....not necessarily too awful as a starting selection.

I also wonder whether Lallana and, more likely, Chamberlain may emerge as strikers rather than midfielders.

In the Premier League, we managed to get by with Jo Tessem and Brett Ormerod....

With Connolly back to fitness we'll not be signing another striker perhaps.

Lambert, Barnard, Connolly, Guly, Forte + Doble and the other kids. Can't see another coming in and disturbing the pecking order TBH.

think we do need another striker ...

With luck Connolly may stay clear of injuries...but Barnards case is still pending and he has an uncertain future, Lambert has been lucky to get by unscathed for 2 seasons, BUT if we are going all out for the Prem. we need all the experience we can get.

Forte is a winger, not a big scorer and Guly is a good change player but not a 46 games a season type... and though Doble is a good prospect, he's not even debuted yet ..NO sorry ..one more striker please Mr. Cortese.

I'm sure we will sign a novelty striker from Italy around 10th August. Preferably someone with a stupid name and dance and I also imagine he will have a bit of pace similar to Antonio.

er.... If Rasiak could finish a season in the top 5 scorers in the Championship at his snails pace then I'm sure Rickie can do a job!!!

I don't even think we need a new striker tbh we've got 4 quality ones. Only problem is we've not no one to replace Waigo with regards to dancing. Perhaps some one could get Lallana to do an Ian Curtis flappy arm dance after each goal he scores.

I think it will be two.

A speedy poacher and a Lambert replacement!

Mellor really does look a good cheap option for Lambert if he gets injured which leaves you with more money for a speedy poacher.

How about Berbatov on loan? I'm not sure he is one for the future as he couldn't make uniteds champions league final squad. Certainly do a job in this league though and would fancy it I reckon after his falling out with fergie over that game.

How can people say Le Fondre? Never played higher than League 2. Not exactly pedigree

It think this must be something to do with wanting to learn to speak French. It's not easy accepting that there are languages other than English, but it's not too difficult if you really try. The first word "Le" is formed by placing the tongue firmly to the roof of ones mouth and then saying "eh" which is exactly the same sound you make when you've not heard what your mate has said in a noisy pub. "Fondre" presents a trickier challenge and is outside the scope of this lesson, however further help can be found here... http://www.bbc.co.uk/languages/french/

I agree that we will need another striker, but the way pre-season has shaped up, I'm not so sure NC will be sanctioning another player. It could be a waiting game for January to see how the squad copes as I am not convinced this season will be about 'going all out for the Prem'. We'll do our best to get there with the squad we've got obviously, but I doubt squad unity will be risked just in case Connolly breaks down (which I think is less likely than some seem to think).

I think I know what you mean, but I'm not looking to replace Lambert (he with a new 3 year contract), but we do need a "Lambert " clone " - in case of serious injury or longer absence.

I hope he continues to score at the same rate, but looking at Sunderlands unlucky season ( NINE players injured after February ...6 needed ops. - when they were top 6, I think) I am more and more than convinced we need five or six possibilities available.

NOTE: Early on in Strachans time, we had FIVE injured strikers in Feb.)

I'd like to think that Connolly will stay injury-free, he is a class act ...but as NC has (according to info.) made big bids for Sharp and Maynard, (despite them not signing) ..I think the money is still on the table and they are taking another look at NAs wish list.

I think the squad realise that they are not all going to get on the pitch every week, I can't believe that jealousy is such a big factor.

Players realise injuries can happen and everyone is a loser if we fail to get promotion because of a weakened squad with no cover.

Look back at the strength-in-depth we had last season...Richardson came in for Butterfield when injured. Dickson was good exchange for Harding.

Martin and Seabourne (though not in the same class) did well when we needed short term replacements for Fonte and Jaidi).

There was ample cover for Lallana (when he was out twice) . Guly and Chaplow covered for others several times and still managed a few goals - and Alex came good when Schneiderlin was out, and (back to) Connolly... whose goals were invaluable when he took over in the last 5 games after Barnard was injured.
