The Open

OK so it all kicks off tomorrow, the weather looks pretty grim.

Who's gonna win it?

Will Lee finally come good? Can Luke do it 2 weeks in a row? or will Rory become the new Messiah of Brit Sport?

Can a Journeyman pro come through & do a once in a lifetime like Ben Curtis?

We can't bet here but I'd have a tenner EW on Lee.

Anyone else got any ideas? anyone else planning to book their sofa for the weekend with no footie on the box?

Thomas Bjorn eh. Cracking round of golf by him this morning. Only scrapes in as a replacement and the scene of his implosion back in 2003.

The way the course & greens seem to make good players look stupid, who knows what could happen. Tommy would be this year's heart tug story.

Oh and that Tom Lewis looks bloody useful as well.

WTF are Lee & GMac doing though?

First chance for me to watch today and really looking forward to it. Now I understand the game I'm well up for it.

I was actually born a stones throw from RSG's sand know the intricacies of the weather patterns only too well. Is guess tnhat whoever was getting in to their game yesterday is gonna really struggle to re adapt showing this weekend. I saw a Korean chap play a couple of cracking round saving shots from awkward lies, one from next to a fence post, can't recall his name. He's my tip to do well as he had those shots 'in his bag' others appear to be good consistently if they had straighforward shots.

The course is v tricksy. Add the blustery channel wind and the rain and they are gonna face a masssive test with all but their tee shots imho. Revenue the greens will be a different animal now, and they are not easy at the best of times. On a side note, as kids we used to play hide and seek on that course, great fun.

If I were a betting man is forget all the favourites and early leaders. Couldn't believe that Tory's coach is home in Ireland, he's up shut creek now without said paddle.

Have to say that IMHO the course is bordering on the unfair. It IS funny to watch the world's greatest golfers reduced to Jibbering wrecks like most of us on a course, but a proper challenge should be to hit a perfect shot and get rewarded. So many times players are doing just that and then get a stupid bounce or run off and they are screwed.

That to me brings in too much of the luck element into the game, sure you get magical moments of skill (like Rory out the 18th Bunker last night) but they are few and far between.

Still with the field bunched up so tightly, the old adage of anyone could win this really applies and I think it will make really exciting viewing tomorrow evening as odd bounces and bad lies can turn a good shot into a double bogey. Anyone staying under par the next 2 days has to be in with a chance of winning.

Nice to see Darren played well after working with Bob Rotella. Best damned Golfing Tips book ever written for us hackers - Golf is Not a game of Perfect.

Damn right this week, it is about fighting & scrambling, not about attacking and being perfect.

Am actually enjoying it - we get 10 hours coverage a day!

How amazing it would be if Darren could hang on and win it. True fairytale after all he has been through, so highly unlikely

That wind! Fortune favours the brave

Forget the actual leader today, forget the actual leader, forget sentiment, the winner will be the form leader on todays scores, mark my word.

Who was that Korean who hit the green from under the fence pls?

Ikeda. And he is Japanese, not Korean. (Cue standard xenophobic remarks).

Thanks lb

Ikeda to move up the board today, my tip.

More trivia. Deal, the the parent town to Sandwich, has a motto. ' Welcome The Stranger'.

Like RSG's, all are welcome but don't expect custard crewmen, actually don't even expect a biscuit, being our guest is your privilege not ours.

Does that make sense?

I'm actually a bit peer off tbh.

As a newbie I want to watch som3 golf, 1 hour into the coverage and all I've had is talking and more talking.

Show me the golf ffs.

Should have been down here.

We havet he Golf Channel as the main providers with Julian Tutt in a studio, they take all the vdieo feeds and have been on since 10am your time. When the Beeb decide to show golf they switch to their commentary. I love Peter Alliss but does he not realise that the entire WORLD outside the US is listening to him drone on every 5 minutes about some old boy at some obscure golf club in UK? Sure it's nice occassionally, but too much Peter!

Anyway what it means for us is 10 hours a day no breaks no interviews or background pieces, no adverts, no news or changing to BBC2. Just golf

Oh and IKEDA - he had a good run but blew the last 3 holes yesterday, may not have the mental stamina for it

Old heads and unusual shots the order of the day. Woodland showing the shot making, Tom Watson - he really cannot keep it going surely? He must have hypothermia by now.

Correct me if I am wrong but are a lot of these players actually playiing quite badly?

They say you should play a shot in your mind first (visualisation) and I really do think I could.do better than some of them, the putting in particular.

Let's be honest - the Open is a bit of a joke tournament. If it was held in another country we would dismiss it as farcical. No one in their right mind would play golf by the seaside today. It's a complete lottery.

The actual Tee to Green seems easier today - as the ball doesn't just keep running and running - 1st 2 days seemed almost every good shot ended in the same places. Today you can't just stand there and belt it as Tom Watson just said.

But not sure that you really want one of the world's great sporting events reduced to a lottery - can't even see half the shots.

Buit again that makes it different from any other event - just hang on and bumble the ball round. Mental game today in more ways than one

And yep Hammy maybe - depends on work & stuff will let you know but not from a good month or two

The rain coming could throw Darren's relaxed composure, especially as he's waiting on the reed atm. Nice to see a sportsman smiling so much though. Keep it up fella.

Range this morning knocked my own confidence no end. Still fancy my putting as my forte though since my bessie mate gave his old faithful, he'll Li(e to regret that one day.

Thoroughly enjoyed that, great game. Meant a lot to me as its the first time I've actually known what was going on and it was held on what is technically my home course.

Usually.you get youngsters being inspirational in sports but reading Darren's Open stats make that quite special, not to mention his recent knocks in life. Love the bloke.

Love those bunkers.

Bit of trivia for you all: Royal St.George's was originally resigned by Field Marshall Montgommery to keep the Germans out, the bunkers are actually tank traps.

Which is how Walter Hagen won there exactly 100 years ago today.

Wonderful afternoon of entertainment, up and down emotionally like the Umbrellas.

Somehow with those bounces off contours and out of bunkers, you felt that somebody upstairs really was watching out for him.

Very happy for him, a great guy

Darren Clarke.

A man who buys a round for the helpers.

Who will always stop and give golf lessons to the numpty hackers he is asked to play with in pro-ams every week

Who is happy to sit and watch the football or rugby with the fans after a tournament into the wee hours, and if you have something interesting to talk about will ask you to join him for a chat.

An elite sportsman supposedly over the hill with a beer gut that jokes with his closest competitor and has a fag when things get tense.

A man who showed today that sport at the very highest level is about skill and mental attitude, focus and approach.

A lot of people in other sports around the world could learn a lot from him. Skill and talent alone is not enough.

Also respect to old Leftie today for the way he played the outward 9 - awesome, but also the way he handled his mini-collapse on the back 9 - he was still there shaking hands and thanking people and having words for Darren.

Both of them, true heroes.

And amazingly, two of only three sports people in the world that a certain TSW member owes a pint to.

Phil, are you calling me a liar?

I told my mate how impressed I was with Darren's be so calm and at ease, he was devoid of pressure, that's what won it I think.

I didn't know about his recent loss and the other stuff until today. It does make you think doesn't it..

No your post had a typo that could have been read either way:-)

OK so you are learning about golf. Now, tonight, get onto Amazon and do yourself an immense favour by buying Bob Rotella's book "Golf is Not a Game of Perfect" It will show you why Darren won - (Bob was talking to him all through his time on the range before he went out) AND it really will make a huge difference to your learning to play

I didn't know about his recent loss and the other stuff until today. It does make you think doesn't it.

.And yes, that, and the fact that those rain showers only arrived when he was on the Tee waiting to play (unlike poor Rickie Fowler for example). Read up about The Ryder Cup at the K Club in Ireland to see a lot more on that and a real tug on the heart strings.

But while Someone upstairs may have smiled today, Darren won it, makes all of us (including Fate) very happy people. Also expect there to be a shortage of Guinness tonight in Kent

Ta Phil, my lie was about Monty's bunkers BTW.

A shot, good or bad, is history, just like bad/sad news. Accepting that is key. Different level but I gave up playing albeit badly after Mrs h was diagnosed with cancer, then my doc TOLD ME to get back out there and the penny dropped. I'm still rubbish but I started to improve after that day and golf is now very special to me. Stopped trying to be good or better and it started happening as if bymaguc, my best shots are when I am thinking about absolutely nothing, its weird.
