Friendly v Biel

Yeah, he does, all the more reason to play him on the right wing not the left.

I can't even remember who our inverted wingers were when Burley was doing it, anyone recall?

We didn't overtly set out to play that way. We had Bale at left back and Skacel at left wing.

You might be thinking of people criticising Surman being at right wing; but only a handful of dinlos were doing that, I think.

Most criticism of Burley was: i) for playing central midfielders in other positions; ii) for signing players in the wrong area of the squad, and iii) for picking BWP all the time, no matter how ****e he was (whilst apparently falling out with Rasiak, a much better striker). Oh and iv), for being an unprofessional ****head.

I'm not suggesting there wasn't other criticism of Burley, I'm merely saying that his tendency towards playing inverted wingers wasn't worthy of the criticism it was getting, and other teams using them successfully (including Saints yesterday) shows it's a worthy tactical ploy. I should probably call up Soccerbase to see who we had...

I think by the time we started using the inverted wingers, Bale had gone and Skacel was left back. I'm fairly sure it was the season we started with no defence (that would have been [v]), and ended with no Burley.

It was a fair bit wider than "a handful of dinlos", but I do vaguely recall delldays being one of them.

Just had a look at the teams through the first half of 2007/8 - Pretty sure Hammill, Euell and Surman were involved somewhere along the line.

This was the team which miraculously beat the to-be-promoted Hull side 4-0 : Three potential left midfielders in it with Euell, Surman and Hamill (ignoring Viafara, BWP and Saga who all also played there at some point).

K. Davis, J. Wright, A. Bennett, A. Davies, R. Skacel, J. Euell, A. Surman, Y. Safri, A. Hammill (J. Viafara, 78 ), B. Wright-Phillips (M. Saganowski, 69), S. John (G. Rasiak, 83)

We also fielded a side with Sagnowski, John and BWP in it at one point without me thinking "4-3-3", how ?

BWP was deployed as a winger sometimes. He was always picked, despite being pathetic.

I think, in that team above, it would've been Surman on the left and Hammill on the right (although they might have swapped). Euell was nearly always used in CM.

I see Chamberlain was waring the number 7 shirt last night.

It means nothing.

Lambert wore 7 in the 1st half, Chamberlain wore 7 in the second half.

The teams just wore 1-11 in each half and weren't using squad numbers. They have been however using squad numbers on their training kit.

watching the highlights on Saints Player it looked like a quality game. Chambo's goal was absolutely fantastic. Holmes put 3 or 4 very good crosses in. Lallana went on an incredible mazey run. Fourpast made the most feeble attempt at closing down a 1-on-1 I have ever seen for the first goal he conceded (2-2) and then let a corner float into his 6 yard box and stood and watched the attacker tap it into the net. LOL. Good to see & hear a few Saints out there, good effort.

Looks like Biel dished out a bit of rough stuff. Bloody Swiss.

Slightly concerning to see Lambo miss a sitter from the deck again but hopefully that is just preseason rustiness, not a continuation of last season's poor finishing from boot.

True. But every time we sing it he scores. Then comes up to us and gives it the ol' hand to ear. Luv it!

At Plymouth he was quite clearly waggling his finger and shaking his head to the "Back From the Dead" song in an "I do not approve" manner, and then applauded the "nanananananana David Connolly" song immediately after it. That's pretty unambiguous.

seriously guys...I cannot believe the stess and high blood pressure coming out of this thread after the first TRAINING match !

It's mainly down to fitness levels and playing 22 players who are likely to be played in different roles to see if they have any "hidden talents " like Joe Payne.

No sorry, I pay no attention to results like this - it's all about getting everyone fiiiter and more competitive.

My tip: don't expect to start v. Leeds with the same team that finished v. Walsall. There may be a lot more changes than you think.

Or, he has a sense of humour.

FFS.

We are selling KD and Cork. My God!! Just when you think things are looking up. I am sooooooooo angry.

...... and Michael Owen couldn't even get a place on the bench - he's probably got some sort of escape clause in his transfer contract and will bog off back to Man Ure for not being automatic first choice centre forward,

Maybe we should give each player a series of scorecards then they can rate each song we sing for them out of ten? This way we'd take any ambiguity out of the players reaction. I'll get on twitter and suggest this to Jordan Sibley. Could be a real winner.

I think he was trying to say that he was available for a long time, but just was not picked by the Manager, thus not back from the dead.

Don't tell Cortese, it would be a bloody text vote.

Fair enough. I am 100% certain that he just hates the "dead" song.

I am not surprised, it is a truely cringeworthy song.

RIGHT ! Connolly was back on the bench (fit) for the MK Dons game and made a few sub.apps. but both Lambert and Barnard were in good form and no-one would have changed the side then.

When Barnard was injured - Bristol Rovers (H), Connolly was able to come in and scored 3 goals in the last 5 games.

I have. There's nothing about David Connolly. :)

This must have all been one bad dream. Now, where were we? :D

I'll probably send you my loltastic communications between me and the MVFL at some point... worth a read, f'sure.

PS: I haven't forgotten the kit washing money, either ;)

Just watched the highlights - lovely little slow mo of a run from Lallana, and although it's hard to judge from such short clips the 'keeping from Forecast was absolutely horrendous.

The match report basically said forecast kept us in it 2nd half

Thoughts from the game - it's taken me this long to get onto the Internet.

First half team was strong and confident, special mention for Holmes, Bartoz, Fonte, DC and especially Lallana who was different class. Morgan looked a bit unconcerned, certainly not up for it.

The second half team were nothing like the first half team and struggled for long periods. They had no shape and a midfield that included Dan Harding didn't really work despite good effort. Oxo was another one who didn't look up for it, worryingly it looked like his mind was elsewhere.

The team, Nigel and Nicola were all happy to talk to, and have photos with the few Saints fans there - they collectively seemed relaxed and "together"
