I've said it since he arrived and I'll say it again, 2 years on: Lee Holmes has the potential to be a EPL-class winger IF he stays out of the treatment room. His delivery is and has always been superb and his trickery makes up for a "lack" of pace (even though he's not actually that slow).

Rather LH on the wing than someone who can just run fast.

Having read the report on the OS, anyone want to start slagging off Adkins for playing inverted wingers - Holmes on the right setting up the first two goals and Forte and Chamberlain switching wings in the second half...?

It used to be a stick to beat Burley with for the tactically stunted.

Wasn't he a bit more thinking outside the envelope than just switching wings when it came to player position's?

Who, Burley? He made a few odd choices towards the end but there was a good 6 months before the Bennett/Makin debacle where people were constantly having a pop at how stupid it was to play wingers on the wrong sides, even though the benefits of inswinging crosses and players cutting inside on their stronger foot should be pretty sodding obvious.

This despite it being de riguer at a lot of coaching seminars at the time and clearly up there with playing without recognised strikers as the Next Big Thing. Funnily enough Scotland went with a 4-6-0 not long after Burley left.

I'd have Burley more as a "pushing the box" type over thinking outside the envelope, btw. ;)

Holmes looks pretty much at ease with his right foot though, cross for the first goal is definitely with his right foot, think the second may be as well. Nice to see Connolly actually

getting on the end of good ball into the box, Swiss defence nowhere in sight though, may be due to the quality of the crosses.

Yeah, he does, all the more reason to play him on the right wing not the left.

I can't even remember who our inverted wingers were when Burley was doing it, anyone recall?

I think Burley's problem was playing players out of position when they were obviously not comfortable with it, playing too many players out of position in the same game and most of all making crucial subs way after they were due and far too late.

WGS played Fernades on the right and he loved it while Anders who liked the attacking mid field role for his country was played on the left and he stank. Each manager trys something, some things work and some things dont. Burley tried many things that didnt work and got beaten with many sticks because of it.

Personally I would rather have a fast winger playing on the wrong side but most of their training would be on give and go and a bi-line cross with thier wrong foot. If they can get half decent at that then they will be effective. If they only cut inside (like Dyer used to) they will get found out.
