SWF Server - Early predictions

Thedelldays

Recommended Posts

as many of us have signed up for another happy year on this place.....going with what Benji said on another locked thread about the over MOD'ing at times and how quick some are to lock threads to "save space"...

what are your predictions of the performance of the server this season...

for a paying website it was a ddisgrace at times last season...something I think the admin would agree

much like SFC, they are happy to take our cash....so what assurances can they give with the performance

of the server.

please dont lock this in one of your MOD'ing rages....this service WE PAY FOR is quite important when you have no scope of getting to a game etc.....otherwise, why would you pay.

cheers

This forum is going to be much more important to me this year now I'm away more, so I can only pray that the problems from last season don't reoccur this.

I'd be interested to know how many hundreds or thousands this forum pays for the rights to print the fixtures? I know it's a lot, surely that could be spent on improving the server as having the fixtures is totally unnecessary for a forum.

I've even suggested in the past getting rid of all other Saints Web pages and just keeping the forum. Transfers? Injuries? News stories? Wasted space.

I agree...alot of hardly used sub forums...IF,, BIG IF they effect the performance on matchdays then surely they have to be closed..

much of this season I will be in another country so this place will become important at times..

I'd have thought that performance issues are down to sheer weight of numbers viewing and posting at the same time. In that case, sub-forums will only have a marginal effect (if any at all) during matches, as the vast majority of posters will be on the match thread. It may be that my understanding of the issue is deficient, in which case I'm more than happy to be corrected (and I'm sure I will be :)).

It's the constant refreshing that kills it....i believe the application is now running on a seperate box to the db, which *should* help. No idea what infrastructure was chosen in the end though, but they were looking at a scalable solution so it could be beefed up or match days

Surely the forum could be accessible for paying users only if the forum can't deal with the numbers.

Lets see how the site holds up this season.

I'm certainly not renewing until the farce that was the last couple of seasons is fixed. Coupled with the big brother modding that's been going on for the last couple of months I am going to give up altogether with this place if it doesn't improve!

I predict that the majority of those moaning vividly about forum performance on match days will be those who don't pay.

I may be wrong but, if you're not a fully paid up bonaifde member, don't you get a banner warning that some forums won't be accesible during peak periods??

I never come on here on match days because I'm either at the match or watching/listening to other coverage. So I'm not really that bothered about server performance at "peak times" - or for about 4 days after any defeat, as I don't usually bother to read the same people saying the same ill-informed things then either.

Me neither, I'm too busy on match days generally (saturdays anyway) and I either listen on the tranny or get twitter updates....and I never bother to read the post match knee jerk thread, too emotive

I predict a considerable number of server crashes, lots of talk about actions to sort things out and ultimately nothing happening of any substance to make things better. Having said that, let's face facts here - £5 / year is not a massive amount of money to spend on a service that many of us enjoy the use of for a considerable amount of time and some of the whingers need to get out a little more perhaps. I have no problem with the MODing providing its fair and consistent. I do think though that full members should see some added advantage other than unlimited posts.

One question for the MODs. Does the forum limit the number of accounts open to a given IP address? If not, I can imagine on match day that there are some posters who have more than one user ID open and then refresh each one over and over to gain 'quicker' access. If this is happening, it would be no surprise the forum (server) can't cope.

I appreciate the frustrations of not being able to log onto a site, and emphathise with any long distance Saints fan. That said, it's a fiver. I have paid subscriptions to other sites, and believe me, they are much more expensive than a fiver ( most recent subscription was $50 for the year ).

Personally, I just went for the SaintsPlayer subscription and did that last year. Unless you're a fan of seeing grown men weep at a seemingly unassailable 1-0 half time deficit, match days aren't all that on SaintsWeb.

Exactly this. This is the last place I'd want to come on a match day.

I recall that being suggested on several occasions over the last couple of years but I can't recall it ever being tried out.

As has been pointed out already, it's the sheer volume of people posting and refreshing simultaneously that overloads the server - so considering the other forums are only accessed by one or two people during matches, if at all, then closing them won't help a bit.

Also I think we should stop moaning about what we pay for the Forum and demanding perfect performance or actions based on our complaints. Lets remember this is not a profit making business, its run by volunteers and as such we should not be getting in such a state, as if we are demanding something from our gas company etc.

Do Baj, Steve or anyone know what percentage of people "posting and refreshing simultaneously" are £5 members versus registered users?

i.e. would making it a 'members only' forum on matchdays help alleviate the "overload"?

Fine, but if you want the most extreme porn you are always going to have to pay for it.

That's not a fair comparison, the specialist porn sites you subscribe to have far greater overheads like hiring midgets, dildo wear and tear etc.

Supposed I walked into that one. The paid subscription I was referring to is for these guys. They do good stuff for game geeks, and mostly for nowt. They rely on idiots like me to stump up the cash so that the rest of the world can enjoy it.

Fascinating. Trust me fella, I'd much rather be at the match than on here too. The commute from China is a bit tricky though, so have to put up with this forum and BBC Sport.

I'm not suggesting there aren't people for which this isn't their best option - just that for a lot of people that isn't a priority as far as the service goes.

I'm speaking as someone who spent half of last season working in France. I just find the match thread a bit ridiculous, often full of over-reactionary nonsense. I always preferred to find somewhere with Sky Sports News and watch that instead. The match thread always seemed a bit pointless to me (the "just back from the game" summaries were often useful though).

The match day threads are postings such as

'corner'

'I can hear the crowd'

'time for a sub'

To be honest, I can probably continue my life without such visionary commentary and still sleep at night.

true but it's still better than listening to Solent. Oh good that Commentary is awful

Gotta be honest - I do rely on the match thread during the season - that and sky sports as well. But I'm thinking about biting the bullet and investing in saintsplayer next season in order to get the commentary.

  • 1 month later...

That was a fecking disgrace tonight.

Generally slow but then three times it became so slow that it caused my IE to time out & crash.

I had to reboot at HT to get the commentary back, luckily stuck it up in reduced mode but this is now beyond a joke.

So much for Cloud Computing. More like Clown Computing

Won't be coming back on here matchdays until it gets properly sorted, will stick to Skyping & FB mates, simply because when it crashes I lose the Saints Player and THAT is boolix

I can't be arsed with this forum on a match day anymore. Seriously, it's been like this for years, we've still been paying towards it, yet it's still unusable.

You might as well stick a holding page up during games ''Site is unavailable for 90 mins'' - as it is, every single time. Bloody rubbish.

So bad, and I'm trying to choose my words carefully. Make the main board, full members only on match days, after all, we are paying to help run this forum.

THIS!!

As nothing appears to have been done server wise at least give those of us who pay access to a working forum. it doesn't have to be the whole day of a match; something like 30 mins prior to the match until an hour after the final whistle would be ample.

This might even encourage more people to part with a fiver, as well as stopping many from not bothering to renew.

I was wondering if the guys who run the site could give us a lowdown on what happens to the money that you make here? Does it all go back into the site or does someone take some in way of payment for their efforts etc?

Good luck with that. I asked before but got a 'none of your business' (in so many words). As a result I no longer pay.

FWIW I think a chatroom, rather than a forum is most appropriate for matchdays. vBulletin isn't designed to be mashed with refreshes, that plus I suspect the hardware is either low end or inefficiently configured. Plus it would cut out 10 people telling me Lambert has scored - tonight that got confusing :) as I thought it was still 1-0!!

This has been suggested for months, nay years, now and it's never been tried (as far as I'm aware) and no-one has ever explain WHY this can't be tried.

White flag time I'm afraid. The sticking plaster "solutions" over the years are just that.

Time to ditch the "dedicated" server solution and channel our money into a 'cloud' based solution.

Simple. As. That
