bridge too far Posted 12 July, 2011 Share Posted 12 July, 2011 http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-devon-14118286 What a shame that a bank that pays out huge bonuses to its executives can't find the wherewithall to keep open homes for its elderly pensioners. Mao Cap Posted 12 July, 2011 Share Posted 12 July, 2011 Good Christ. With RBS' gift for PR, it wouldn't surprise me if they actually got a guy in a top hat and monocle to twirl his moustachios as he threw the elderly residents out on the pavement. hamster Posted 12 July, 2011 Share Posted 12 July, 2011 Shocking (but not surprising sadly), the more of these stories we keep reading the more determined we should be to take these people back under societies wing. And some people have the gall to mock 'socialism' as an outdated ethos, not funny any more I'm afraid. These are OUR parents and grandparents ffs! teamsaint Posted 12 July, 2011 Share Posted 12 July, 2011 one day we will all wake up to the carnage that big money is causing in our world, and start to put right the wrongs. Until then we will have apologists for the banks and their friends in government. Oh and don't get me started on the various wars we are fighting and funding for the benefit of the arms industry. Time to wake up.
Special K Posted 13 July, 2011 Share Posted 13 July, 2011 As the Treasury owns 84% of RBS, you would like to think that a little persuasion from Downing Street may be on the agenda.
Pancake Posted 13 July, 2011 Share Posted 13 July, 2011 Why should a bank run a failing business? Take away the emotional matter of the business itself, and answer me that question. They have no obligation to run a business that is losing money...

I think what makes it particularly sad is that the homes were for retired RBS employees, not for the general public (as I understand it). Once upon a time, employers used to look after their long serving staff, even if it came out of their pockets / profits rather than being a self-sustaining act. Sheaf Saint Posted 13 July, 2011 Share Posted 13 July, 2011 one day we will all wake up to the carnage that big money is causing in our world, and start to put right the wrongs. Until then we will have apologists for the banks and their friends in government. Oh and don't get me started on the various wars we are fighting and funding for the benefit of the arms industry. Time to wake up. This too is my dream for the future of humanity. Imagine there's no Heaven It's easy if you try No hell below us Above us only sky Imagine all the people Living for today Imagine there's no countries It isn't hard to do Nothing to kill or die for And no religion too Imagine all the people Living life in peace You may say that I'm a dreamer But I'm not the only one I hope someday you'll join us And the world will be as one Imagine no possessions I wonder if you can No need for greed or hunger A brotherhood of man Imagine all the people Sharing all the world You may say that I'm a dreamer But I'm not the only one I hope someday you'll join us And the world will live as one John Lennon The world is like a ride at an amusement park. It goes up and down and round and round. It has thrills and chills and it's very brightly coloured and it's very loud and it's fun, for a while. Some people have been on the ride for a long time, and they begin to question: Is this real, or is this just a ride? And other people have remembered, and they come back to us, they say, "Hey - don't worry, don't be afraid, ever, because, this is just a ride...” But we always kill those good guys who try and tell us that, you ever notice that? And let the demons run amok. Jesus - murdered; Martin Luther King - murdered; Malcolm X - murdered; Gandhi - murdered; John Lennon - murdered; Reagan... wounded. But it doesn't matter because: It's just a ride. And we can change it anytime we want. It's only a choice. No effort, no work, no job, no savings and money. A choice, right now, between fear and love. The eyes of fear want you to put bigger locks on your doors, buy guns, close yourself off. The eyes of love, instead, see all of us as one. Here's what we can do to change the world, right now, to a better ride. Take all that money that we spend on weapons and defenses each year and instead spend it feeding and clothing and educating the poor of the world, which it would many times over, not one human being excluded, and we could explore space, together, both inner and outer, forever, in peace. They have no obligation to run a business that is losing money... It's not a business, it's a charity. It also appears to be "in-house". So a tacit acknowledgement that RBS is **** poor at running anything, even those charitable concerns it burdens itself with (love to see their initial business plan). Also, they owe a duty of care to the country for bailing their arses out (bit tenuous that one, but hey ho). It also sees itself fit to throw millions at Andy Murray and his mum, whilst throwing poor Mrs Miggins out on the street and expecting someone else to take up the slack.
