Barney Trubble Posted 12 July, 2011 Share Posted 12 July, 2011 Any suggestions of an area around here, B&B's, Guesthouses etc where I can escape for a few days? I've always said I would go there, but have always found a reason not to; until now! Any suggestions of places to visit in the area, please let me know. I'm just looking for a place where I can go walking, take in some fresh air, get away from congestion and the stress of day to day life, and generally lose myself for a few days away from the suburbs. It'd be more of a budget thing, so expensive hotels won't be on my agenda.

teamsaint Posted 12 July, 2011 Share Posted 12 July, 2011 If staying in Fort William I would certainly do the train trip out to rannoch if you like peace and quiet. Rannoch station is pretty much in the middle of nowhere, and popular with walkers etc, i think. Nice train ride through the country, (3 per day each way i think), and very odd to get off at a station where, if memory serves, there is just one hotel and nothing else. All rather Victorian. Seem to remember mallaig is a quiet fishing port type place if you fancy a stroll round a small town, and a train ride north. and I do know, for a certain fact, that you cannot buy a Saints away shirt in fort William !! 1976_Child Posted 17 July, 2011 Share Posted 17 July, 2011 Fort William itself is a pretty typical tourist hole. The town is not that great. Immediate scenery/landscape is awesome but the town is tired and grotty. I stayed in the biggest hotel in the town a few years ago. Can't remember the name but it was prominent and would have been quite imposing in years gone by. Alas, time had not done it well. Crap food, crap service and a really crap little room which stank of rotten fish. And expensive. This was in the mid-90s so with a bit of luck some one else has taken it over and done a better job, but my lasting impression of Fort William was 'not somewhere I will rush back to'. Barney Trubble Posted 17 July, 2011 Author Share Posted 17 July, 2011 Thanks all. It looks like I will have to find another place to stay anyway, I have had over thirty 'we are fully booked' responses. I might now look to stay somewhere in the immediate area of Fort William, or try Oban.

Also (assuming it is still there) make a reservation at the Seafood Restaurant right on the harbourside. I can STILL taste the amazing Haddock & Chips I had there some 7 years ago, straight off the boat, stunning food (good idea BTW I can remember Oban but Fort William? Only remember teh scenery & a queue for the car park at Tesco's)
