Sam Vokes

Right then...

Remember this? http://www.saintsweb.co.uk/showthread.php?7620-Ricky-Lambert-Bring-Him-IN-NOW!!

If we're after anyone right now, it should be Sam Vokes.

Probably surplus at Wolves and a full Welsh international.

Exactly the type of player we should be bringing in...

Is the this the same Wales that have just slipped below the Faroe Islands in the world rankings? :)

I know for a fact (from one of the above) that Sam is very keen to come to SMS if something can be sorted. He's still youbg enough to develop into a quality player.

This was widely suggested when he left Bournemoth, but we of course were penniless at the time.

I've no doubt he might still like to relaunch his career here, but do Saints share this dream enough to try and sort something out ?

I think that might be the question that has been asked recently. No idea about the reply.

Let's put it this way, if we were interested in taking a punt on a "lower league player", you could do worse than by signing one who's a known fan of the club, knowing that the chances are he's going to give everything he's got to make the club successful.

Love to have some proper Southampton lads playing for us in the derby matches - Drew, Vokes and Bridgy for a start - just think Bridgy's celebration in front of the skates when he scored against them for Chelsea, pure hatred - he's one of us, something modern derby matches miss.

Sam and his brother matt went home and away for years as kids, i used to travel on the same minibus with tim , colin etc ..those were the days.

My memory of those minibus trips was that Sam and Matt would spend most of them having a mini-ruck at some point. I believe that Matt is on Boscombe's books.

agreed. I can see Barnard or Lallana giving it the big one at **** park after they have both scored. A bridge-like celebration down the complete length of the South stand would go down in folk law.

As to Vokes, what sort of player is he? I have chunky target man, no pace, can finish kind of guy in my mind. Someone put me straight.

If he wasn't a Saints fan, he'd be deemed not good enough. Will he improve our side?

He'd be a more than capable deputy for Lambert, which is what we really need. For all his faults (mainly lack of mobility), Lambert is a major presence in the team and an injury to him would be a major blow to the side. Vokes would definitely be a better bet than Mellor IMO.

Can someone explain to me why Sam Vokes isn't crap? I'm not quite getting it. 2 goals a season for the last couple of years. With Connolly netting 4, all we need to do is bring back Euell and Pericard and we might get 10 goals between them next year.

Goals scored do not determine how good a player is. At wolves he was used as a back up striker and only ever came on as a substitute. At Leeds he was again used as a back up striker, as they prefered to use their permanant players to loan ones. At Bristol City he got injured within 13 mins of his debut. At Sheffield United he played well (as I watched him play for them on several occasions) but again was used as 'an extra option' and didnt get much game time. Due to their financial difficulties, once some of their injured players got fitter they sent Vokes back to Wolves to save money. At Norwich he played 4 games and scored one goal but was recalled by Wolves due to an injury to Kevin Doyle.

He has not been able to settle at a club due to a variety of reasons I have outlined above, therefore it is unfair to say he is crap!

Having seen him play on a number of occasion I think he would be good competition/back up to Lambert as he is a big targetmen. If Lambert got injured, we currently would not have anyone to fill his shoes so Vokes would fit the mold. The bonus is the fact he is still only 21 and therefore has potential. The extra added bonus is he supports saints but that is not the reason I think we should sign him.

God knows why people like you slate players when you clearly know nothing about them.

It is more than fair though to say a lot of people have jumped the gun and said just because a player is a Southampton fan they'll fit right in.

Well, it's mostly because he's done naff all since scoring a dosen goals in League 1, 4 years ago. What you're basically saying is he wasn't wanted by Wolves, Leeds or the Blades, but being a 'target man' makes up for a goal tally Fonte would be ashamed of.

Wonder what the Oxo kid would do if he scored down there.

Though it seems like he has been around for a long time, Vokes is 21, same age as Beattie when he joined us from Blackburn (without a senior goal to his name). At 6 '2 and 14st he could be an excellent second target man behind RL in the pecking order. Worth a punt for sure, for a local lad, being north of Watford is bound to put you off your stroke!...

If we're looking for a quality striker, James McFadden is on a free. Played at Championship level before for a few teams and very experienced at Prem level. Would be a fantastic signing and sign of intent.

didn't realise he was available on a free.he would be a great signing but imagine wouldnt be cheap wages wise. also how old is he? seems to have been around for a bit

Why do people keep banging on about backup for Rickie, lets have some ambition here, and have a wish for someone better than him!

Because he is arguably the best centre forward outside the PL, therefore it's very unlikely we could sign a better player for that position at the moment.

That isn't what I'm basically saying at all. Leeds preferred to use the players they owned, Sheffield United couldnt afford his wages and Wolves have only used him as a back up striker, therefore he has not had a long run of games in a side. This makes it unfair to call him crap. Its not that Wolves dont want him either, he is young and has potential, he is hardly going to displace Kevin Doyle at the age of 21 is he.

Always rated McFadden but he would need patience, after all he's missed a season with cruciate ligament damage.

Couldn't see him wanting to join anyway to be fair, but I personally would take the gamble.

It was good, but still think that Beatts for Stoke against them was better, running up to them with his finger over his mouth, and then shouting at them 'Ave that you Skate C**ts' was of pure quality!

On the subject of Saints fans in our team, how about Wade Elliott?, I still remember him in our Championship relegation season, running round some of our players during our match with Burnley telling them to gee up their performances! I know this as I actually heard him saying it to Lloyd James, Lallana and McGoldrick. He's a quality player at Championship level as well!

We could just field a team made up of Saints fans, I reckon it would be competitive:

GK: Me

LB: David Frost

CB: Craig David

CB: Lucy Pinder

RB: That chap from the BBC who everyone thought was going to buy us

RM: Wade Elliott

CF: Sam Vokes

Sub: Benny Hill, as unfortunately dead, so should be viewed as a back up option at best.

Just need the rest of the midfield and a supporting striker.

Ed Chamberlain from Sky & James Mates from ITN news are both Saints fans aren't they? Centre midfield combo there..

quality player, but if he is fit he won't be allowed to leave. They missed him big style last year. The only problem is finding a place to play him. Off Rickie perhaps, but because Ricky likes to drop so deep himself and doesn't have that natural instinct to get in the box I'm not sure it would work. Lambert needs a true striker next to him who plays on the should of defenders and also likes to get right in the mixer.
