Early predictions for next season?

I know there are still a few weeks to go until the new season during which many more transfers will probably be made, but...

...how do people think the Championship will turn out this season? Where in particular will Saints finish?

Also, what about other clubs? Who will finish top/2nd? Who will make the play-offs? Who will be relegated? Where will P*mpey, Brighton and Reading finish?

Anyone want to hazard a guess for the whole table?!

I think Saints will finish just inside the play-offs, together with Cardiff, Brighton and Leeds. The top two will be Leicester and West Ham. The bottom three will be Crystal Palace, Barnsley and either Peterborough or Burnley. P*mpey will finish 13th, Reading 9th.

I'm going to stick my neck out and say that you're going to be wrong.

Having followed football (and the Saints in particular) for over 50 years, I still hold fast to my traditional method of not looking seriously at the league table ...until after the first 6 games. Of course, this is not a fullproof method, but for 75% of the clubs they will most likely end up +/- 2 or 3 places from where they were at the end of Sept.

Having said that I am entitled to an opinion and mine is that ; Brighton, Portsmouth and Peterboro will all finish below half way,

and the main title challengers will not be Leeds, West Ham or even Birmingham.

My " top candidates " include Saints, Leicester, Ipswich and Burnley (though not necessarily in that order.)

I will come back with the others ... after game number 6.

New season.

Prediction - this is easy, we're Saints.

Lousy start, will drop what we think are stupid points in the first 5 or 6 games leaving us a mountain to climb and another year of moaning negativity & whingeing.

Couple of loan signings in January will help cement a damn fine run to the end of the season where we will scrape into the playoffs but have hundreds of threads where NA has to go for only making playoffs and renowned posters will have posted threads about giving up on supporting Saints.

See, it's easy, just cut & paste from the past 30 odd years

After six games last season we were 22nd out of 24 so confirms your "not foolproof" method!!;)

This division is going to be tough at the top and I tend to agree with most on here.

However, I really think that one of the great advantages we have this season is that we are not "everyone's" favourites to go up as we were last year. All the talk is of West Ham, Leeds, Leicester etc. But I reckon there are 8 to 10 teams in with a shout and we will be up there among them.

I think we have a really good chance of making the playoffs at the very least.

On "current" form I'll go for

West Ham

Leeds

---------

Ipswich

Leicester

SAINTS

Birmingham

--------------

Cardiff

Brighton

Middlesbro

Blimey, when you look through the Championship teams there are a lot of half decent sides who could be in with a shout. It's going to be a close run thing this season - and I'm really looking forward to it

I believe there are about 15 or 16 sides that think they can get into the top 6 this season and therefore could get promoted, and Saints are one of them.

Most of the discussion on here seems to focus on Individual Players and how Club A were after a certain player and we appeared not to me. If you look at other teams WE have better players than them in certain positions and the other 14/15 clubs have strengths in other areas.

However, we have 2 BIG advantages over a lot of the other 14/15 clubs :-

(a) The "Togetherness of the team" shown at end of last season is second to none and IMO will be worth an extra 7 to 10 points (imo it will take a few months for building sides that are spending alot of money to build a "team mentality").

(b) Most of the other sides will play a fix formation i.e. 4-4-2 or 4-3-3 (4-5-1) in a match whereas we have shown that we can play a number of systems and change when one is not working, i.e. Swindon (H) playing 4-4-2, score 1-1 we changed to the "Diamond" with Adam at the head and within a couple of mins it was 3-1. IMO this will also result in extra points over most of the other 14/15 sides, say 6 to 10 points.

I therefore think we will make the Top 6 easily, what position will depend on how many injuries we get this season (we had alot last to key players).

I will go for :-

(1) Ipswich (2) Saints

(3) Leicester (4) West Ham (5) Hull (6) Leeds

(7 - 21) Brum, 8 Forest, 9 Millwall, 10 Burnley, 11 Reading, 12 Cheats, 13 Blackpool, 14 Bristol, 15 Cardiff 16 Boro 17 Watford 18 Derby 19 Brighton 20 Doncaster 21 Palace

(22) P/Boro, (23) Barnsley (24) Coventry.

I think we will get 2nd mainly because there are very few good left backs in this league even Leicester are struggling to buy one and Alex will have the beating of most of them. Sides will then need to change their system to play us and double up more. However my predictions will be completely out if Nicola decides to sell and we will probably be down in mid table (12th to 14th).

It's still quite tricky to say, but based on the current strength of the division I'd expect to see us finish mid-table. (preferably top half, after having a little flirt with the play-offs)

But I can see us in a really strong position for the season after. The clubs going **** or bust will either no longer be in this league, or will be ruined financially and a reduced threat.

The usual poor start, a good pick up and end of season run but we just miss out on the play off finishing 8th. A good season IMHO and if only we could improve on the poor starts we have every season!

This, unless we have some surprisingly good signings yet to come.

Agree with that. this is shaping up to be a very strong league this year...stronger than it has been for many years..

a top half finish would set us up nicely for the season after..obviously I would love us to go up..but top half would be good..top 10 great and playoffs or above, amazing..

good times

we will be mid-table on New Years Day but some good buying in the Jan sales will cover the weaknesses that have emerged and will be followed by a strong drive into the top two, a copy of last season and the Echo will still be complaining about something

Comfy mid-table and happy with that.

This, lets not inflate expectations too much - I don't think we've got much hope of the automatic places at all; reckon 2 from Leicester, West Ham, Birmingham, Ipswich and Forest (my dark horse) will nail those places down. I also think, depressingly, people are underestimating P*mpey..

My prediction is that we will actually get a very good start. I think we will get 9 or 10 points from our first 5 games.

I then predict that all manner of hysterical whinging and idiocy will break out on here when we have a couple of bad results and drop out of the top 2.

Leeds will lose their first game! Leicester, Ipswich, West Ham and Birmingham will be hard to beat. Blackpool will be in with a shout. Coventry and Crystal Palace will struggle. Beyond that, it is hard to say. I think we are in for a top ten finish and that it could be goal difference between tenth and a play off place.

After six games last season we were 22nd out of 24 so confirms your "not foolproof" method!!;)

Even you have to admit that last season was an exception.

Manager sacked after 3 league games and a 4-0 away win, followed by 4 goalless games (eqiuv. to -12 pts.) without a manager..and an injured Lallana.... - almost a replay of 2009/10 when we started with -10 pts. , and then only just missed a play-off place at end of season.

Adkins started with only 1 defeat in first 9 games and got back on track. After which we picked up form again and made it - thank goodness!

But watch the tables yourself and see. At least ONE promoted side will make a great start and then fall away when their enthusiasm drops.

I did say 75% of the teams - and I stand by that.

1st West Ham

2nd Saints

No slow start this season as this preseason is gonna get the players fit rather than injured! Think West Ham will be too strong with Big Sam and his hoofball. Saints second with good style of footy. Leicester 7th with Sven quitting after Xmas claiming he didn't get the funds promised.
