Can someone please enlighten me. I've see Barry The Briefcase mentioned loads of times, but what is his connection with Saints?

No, surely not.

FF get your act together we need that new recent history book written!

Doesn't know who Barry the Briefcase was

He's as legendary as Paul Allen, Yachts & Earlobes

Makes you wonder why a consortium looking to takeover SFC would want a 'professional blagger' onboard...unless they didn't know about his past of course...

Think the basics of the story are that Barry had a backer. It was supposed to be a Middle East Sheikh working through a front company

He contacted some (used to be prominent) members of the old TSF about his backers. Perhaps he was trying to cultivate public support, possibly trying to get Rupert's phone number.

More likely in hindsight he was trying to set up another fake sheikh story.

Anyway, the lads were suckered in and posted all of their updates live on the old TSF forum. The whole debacle when it was discovered to be Barry was embarrassing as hell for the lads, but other events then moved to reduce the abuse & possibly their pain & we ended up with a coup anyway.

Somewhere in the middle of all of this, Paul Allen came along.

Turned out (after a bit of research from Saints fans over here) that the company he was claiming to represent in Dubai didn't exist. The guys were drummed out of the world of Internet forums forever and Saints went bust anyway.

Strangely, these revelations tonight start to make that whole story have a small amount of reality. Could it really have been an attempt to stitch Rupert up? Back in those days he was "somebody within the FA"....

Nah surely that stretches cynicism too far........

But lol wonder if he recorded the conversations? Were the lads at that time hacked? - there's an idea to PMSL to sleep with

Some of the above "what ifs" did cross my mind too. Cynics of the world unite (in theory...)

Just reading article on Beardall in the London Evening Standard tonight...

"Barry Beardall, 65, nicknamed 'Barry the Briefcase'...."

Hey...didn't this forum come up with that nickname?! Fame at last?!

On one of the sites set up to petition about the BSkyB takeover, someone mentioned the name Barry Beardall. I made my one and only comment - 'google Barry the Briefcase' so maybe a search on his name produced a link to his nickname?

Although googling his name does set up links to our takeover.

This forum IS without a doubt one of the leading lights in Investigative Reporting. Our track record is second to none. We've all known for years that Journos come here to check their details first. Hell, half the Journos in England read the Poopey Thread.

Our ONLY weakness is that the Admins have stayed silent on all of this, not one comment on the leading questions of the day. In fact with only a small amount of marketing, this forum should have been a frontrunner for many Journalistic awards and prize funds, it should be worth millions by now and of course free to all.

Actually, hang about, where ARE the admins? you don't think they did that already......

Indeed!!!!!

I remember when Exit2 (admin back then) e-mailed me the company details (directors names etc) of Wacko Jacko's/Fake Sheikh/Barry The Briefcase's company on a Friday evening and I almost spat out my cider when I saw Beardall on there.

Rememebred his name from some shennigans in the accountancy world and some other stuff in the media and let him know straight away. Any doubts (and I had shedloads of them) I had about Wacko and his David Beckham were well and truly outed that evening.

Wasn't Dubai Phil involved in that? Or has my memory tripped out again?

My involvement was simple, I came across the name of the "Company" in Dubai that was supposed to be Barry's backer. God knows where I heard it from but it was supposed to be owned by some "Lady Sheikh" or Sheikha.

Anyway I simply looked the name up on the Dubai Economic Department Trade Licence Name list and found - did not exist.

I DID find a defunct company with that name in Sharjah but it sure as heck had no links to the supposed Royalty. Like you I contacted the guys and had this long call with STL about it. Wish I hadn't bothered TBH. But that's a different story.

Like all Saints fans at the time I guess I wanted the basics to be true but the reality...

So, until couple of days ago I have always felt those 3 guys to be numpties. In light of recent revelations I do lol to myself (and in a way console myself) that this could have been a Fake Sheikh FAIL.

Think Phil was involved in finding out that the company supposedly backing them and their David beckham plan was a sham, but it was Rob (Exit2) who got hold of the UKs company's details on the day they were lodged and then myself who let him know Bazza was as dodgy as feck!!!!!

Stupid thing was the day I found out I was attending an "IT Industry Awards Dinner" for work. Lots of free munchies & stuff. My "conf call" to explain things to the guys ended up costing me around $100 and I missed all the imortant networking due to the levels of denial from the other end of my phone.

Still, about 6 months later I was back in UK & met the guys for a beer in Bompey, in real life most of them turned out to be good but misguided guys. One turned out to be a complete....

The positive aspect was that through them I met a bunch of other forum legends & discovered that all of them are actually true Saints fans like me and actually damned good guys, as before those days I had only been a lurker.

I thought Phil was actually working with LifelongCherryPip?

He certainly seemed to like giving that impression, from memory? Apologies if I have recalled things incorrectly.

In this instance as stated I was a lurker & went & did some research, LLCP was on the conf call along with StD & StL about the fact that their big buyers didn't exist.

The whole story was played out on TSF. I still have nightmares about that even now. The upside was that it led to the Forum Matches & I met Weston Saint Oldnick & others, the downside is I met some complete c*nts

Why so rude about Weston and Nick? They seem pleasant enough old codgers.

I do have a recurring dream (aka conspiracy theory).... Something to do with the old forum database becoming "corrupted" (sometime in 2008?)....those 'historic' posts never to see the light of day again....which, in my recurring dream, was a rather convenient end to the 'takeover saga'...

Of course, in reality, the disappearance of all those threads and posts was simply down to a computer fault....

Sorry I have had a good giggle at this thread! There has only been a couple of times I have cried with laughter at threads on this forum and the old ones. We had the Ted Bates statue, where myself and Um Pahars were on the phone crying, and then about our friend Barry! I love the fact he was called Barry the Briefcase in the press as yes that did come from the forum.
