SO16_Saint Posted 11 July, 2011 Share Posted 11 July, 2011 From the BBC Sportsday ticker: 1540: Southampton manager Nigel Adkins tells BBC Radio Solent his side will use their pre-season tour of Switzerland to improve the "togetherness" of his team. Didnt think there was a probem with 'togetherness'...??
Matthew Le God Posted 11 July, 2011 Share Posted 11 July, 2011 (edited) You are looking for something negative that isn't there! The statement by the BBC attributed to Adkins doesn't say there is a problem does it? You can improve something that is already good you know. They are going away for nearly two weeks in total at the start of pre-season, group of lads away together likely to make them a tighter unit. Well we hope! I agree, there may NOT be a problem (as I initially said) - and if so, it's a strange comment to make.

Always good to strive to be better than you already are. Commonplace in all walks of life and business. Someone gets a A in GCSE mock french exam, that is very good, but they want to be better and get an A*, so they work on their french. Colinjb Posted 11 July, 2011 Share Posted 11 July, 2011 Imagine if Nigel Adkins had said that we'll be focusing on our forward movement and finishing in training today. Would that means he thinks it's awful?

Maybe a quote of what he actually said rather than the Solent paraphrasing of it would be helpful in determining where he was coming from. IMHO, it's quite normal to want to improve something that is already "good". Indeed, every top business does just that day in, day out.
S-Clarke Posted 11 July, 2011 Share Posted 11 July, 2011 Adkins goes on about the togetherness as one of the strongest features of our squad, and says it's a reason he doesn't want to go on a mass spending spree.

Itchen_block4 Posted 11 July, 2011 Share Posted 11 July, 2011 There isn't a problem with it, but there it needs to be maintained and it can always be improved. No hidden messages in that statement I'm afraid.
capitalsaint Posted 11 July, 2011 Share Posted 11 July, 2011 It's still very early in the transfer window and the evolution of the team will keep going, but the important thing is that we've got that great team spirit at this moment in time. http://www.saintsfc.co.uk/page/NewsDetail/0,,10280~2389341,00.html

maysie Posted 11 July, 2011 Share Posted 11 July, 2011 Looks like it's picked up from this story: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/14108661.stm The audio says 'Adkins calls for togetherness' Basically he's refer to Cork and the fact that he wants people withe right attitude and togetherness to come in. In others words, this thread is moot.

If you read my original post, i clearly said that 'i didnt think there was a problem' - was merely asking the question. if you read into the quote that there IS a problem, that's your look out. Just a strange, possibly taken out of context, quote.

Just a strange, possibly taken out of context, quote. I'm so sorry. Things are getting to me at the moment. What with the unbearable tension around the kit release, the extra few pence per match to have a beer under the Kingsland and the fact that we are trying to become a good team again.... it's all getting to me. One of the striking things about the Cork transfer is how easy it should be for him to integrate into the team. Don't think his transfer is an issue in that department. the stain Posted 11 July, 2011 Share Posted 11 July, 2011 I don't think we should try to improve anything this season, as it will clearly show that there is a problem. No more signings as it will send out the wrong signal to our competitors.
Saint_John Posted 11 July, 2011 Share Posted 11 July, 2011 The 2:52 is a cut down version of the 7:10 version that appeared on Radio Solent on saturday(2:50:00 to 2:57:10) http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/p00hqlhz/BBC_Radio_Solent_Sport_09_07_2011/ (some quotes) "players have come back really fit....players focused....fit into formations....we have a fantastic team spirit at this club... etc " Nigel has already got the "togetherness in the team" from last year and IMO it WAS and WILL BE worth an extra 7 to 10 points a season. What a stupid thread title, try listening to the full 7 mins.

the stain Posted 11 July, 2011 Share Posted 11 July, 2011 (some quotes) "players have come back really fit....players focused....fit into formations....we have a fantastic team spirit at this club... etc " Clearly a smokescreen. Something must have happened in training. Maybe a punch up? Maybe Hammond not happy with Corks signing?
Charlie Wayman Posted 11 July, 2011 Share Posted 11 July, 2011 Don't panic. As usual it is all down to Nigel's idiosyncratic use of the English Language. Who else on this planet would use a non-word like "togetherness"? Of course it sparks of concerns as to what may be hidden underneath.. Time for some media training Nige in order to avoid stepping on land mines every time you step into a Press Conference. The main reason they are in Switzerland is to get ****ed up every night for free at the Chairman's expense.

The9 Posted 12 July, 2011 Share Posted 12 July, 2011 Maybe the players could use Saints Web as an example of how to do togetherness. "Nige! Ricky's telling me off for my spelling again!" I would imagine "Nige" might point out that he prefers to be called "Rickie". In other pedant news, togetherness is definitely a word, and they didn't have A*s when I did GCSEs, so I don't understand the analogy...
