New player that made you eat humble pie.

Annoyingly, Jake Thomson. Always excellent at Staplewood when I saw him, as a "new player" for the first team I genuinely thought he was going to be the next Theo Walcott for a few weeks, but he got chucked in as sub at full back a few times, hardly taking advantage of his pace and skill in beating people.

That, along with much of the rest of the side being people unlikely to be able to give him any pointers, soon shredded his confidence on the "big stage" - his crosses were awful for the first team but continued to be effective for the reserves. He never got a decent chance at Saints, and since has slid out of favour at Torquay as well.

Quite possibly, but sliding doors and all that... young players coming into the first team need to be protected, as their confidence could take a hammering and it's fairly obvious after his random crossing show at St Mary's that Jake never got his back.

Carlton Palmer. Never has a player been so poorly received as a signing and turn out to be tremendous. As the song went 'there must be two Carlton Palmers'

I agree with this.

Remember also wondering why we even bothered to sign Fernandes too, but he then proved me wrong for a couple of really good seasons.

How about WGS though ???

Definitely Kelvin Davis but I think that is partly down the season of goalkeeping 'howlers' in his first year here.

I remember feeling nervous every time a defender passed back to him but I'm glad to have been proven wrong, he consistently pulls off outstanding saves and is a very consistent performer.

I watched a lot of Academy games in the seasons Lallana was coming through so was fortunate enough to see the immense potential he carried and it obviously wasnt long before the rest of our supporters noticed it too.

Couldn't agree more. As I said on another thread, he was a great player at youth level, strong, composed, vocal, a natural leader.

He's now looking for a new club and is probably suited to non-league now.

Gordon Strachan and Nigel Pearson

Both of these appointments led me to throw something across the room

Yes. Gordon Strachan was doing quite badly at Coventry at the time as I remember. Nigel Pearson also seemed like a step down. And I am ashamed to say it now but I had serious doubts about Adkins.

Mind you, many other managerial appointments that seemed bad at the time as well, such as Luggy and Poortvliet, were as bad as expected (if not worse).

Good grief, you're not Dalek's twin are you? ;)

Luggy's record (often with half the first team squad out injured): W 5 D 2 L 6

Above average for Saints managers over the last 20 years. I still believe we wouldn't have gone down if he hadn't been replaced by the clown Wigley, followed by the Mad Milan plant Saggy.
