Is that 40 minutes of rubbing your hands together, praying he is wrong so you can correct him?

Not at all, I want to know what was said as the opening post doesn't say much. Nor has anyone else mentioned they heard what was said.

I may have to (annoyingly) agree, i am eager to hear exactly what Solent said before getting too excited about this "Signing".

IMO, whoever we sign is likely to come in for a season or two to allow Martin to develop and settle into the side, and then within 2 seasons time I fully expect Martin to be a first choice centre back.

Monk fits the bill well IMO, experienced now, but who probably only has a few years left in him at the top(ish) level

Exactly.

Barring Jaidi, we have a young crop of CBs. Surely an experienced player is exactly what we need (assuming Jaidi doesn't have a full season at him at last year's level). Allows us to send Martin on loan if we want to get him some really good league experience.

Rare for a signing to be announced on a weekend. Few people would be at St Mary's and importantly the FA's offices would be closed, so the player can't be officially registered and deal formally concluded. Any deal would have to be done in the week and then a delayed announcement until the weekend.

Funny. Towards the end of last season I heard that we'd enquired about a CB from Swansea but the name mentioned was Ashley Williams. Any move depended on whether they were promoted so when they went up I forgot about it.

Or he made it up.

Just seems such a bizarre thing to do, as a poster with no history of WUM posts, and it's not even an obvious rumour to make up.

He only has 252 posts. He doesn't really have a reputation for anything, until now for being a bull****ter.

Unless Nigel wants him to join up with the training camp ASAP.

I'm of the opinion that i'll believe it when I see it.

We aren't going to be signing many medium/long term players while in this division. We need experience to compliment the youth and I think Monk is perfect really.

Funny I thought we just signed Jack Cork. We a rebuilding a side for the NPC and beyond right now. If we don't sign players for the medium/long term now when do you expect that we will do so? We already have the experience in Jaidi at CB, what we need now is a string backup or even replacement for Jaidi for this season and beyond, because whatever happens Jaidi will not play for us after this next campiagn, unless he finds the secret of eternal youth. I was just expressing surprise that we would sign a player like Monk now as he is not in my opinion what we need, unless as expected Seaborne is on his way out. I know GM could do a good job for us. Anyway all sounds like a wind-up.

boy was he **** for Saints when stuck out at right back for Saints back in the day. A lot water under the bridge since then though. I have to ask, if he has been "top draw" for Swansea why are they allowing him to leave? Also is he a big ball winning type like Jaidi? Just what we need if so.

That was so unfair, under Gray I remember. Previous to that, whenever I saw him play CB he was no worse than any half-competent CB in the Prem, so wasn't surprised to see him make a success of his career.

Awesome signing. Oh, and he is similar to Jaidi, domineering centre half, gutsy... just a bit cumbersome, as most big centre-backs are.

one person heard it on solent? 5 came and went with no mention on solent? Nothing on their twitter etc?

Not saying it's us but I did read a few weeks back an agent was involved in a prem CB to Champ. Can't be bothered to see if anyones signed a CB so could have already happened.

Does 6'0" really count as "big" these days for a centre-half? Another player who was allowed to leave Saints before he could mature enough to achieve his potential, strange decision by WGS. Hopefully we will learn that CBs really only mature in their mid 20s, apart for an exceptional few. Bit like Mike Williamson.

Just got in, read this and get all excited... and now it doesn't seem to be happening?

Quite surprised Solent didn't tweet the news - That seems to be their way of doing things...

Would be a good signing - Love the whole thing of being linked with ex Saints (Howard, Lukas Jutkiewicz etc.)

Barnsley signed a CB from Blackpool......i know they are Championship now but he was a Prem CB last season.

A strange signing of true, don't really see too much benefit versus the personnel we already have in this position

Agree.

really not sure whether to comment as fear OP was a lie but watched him last season and was impressed what a solid CB he had ended up being, and as Swansea fans are saying they want him for the premiership would certainly do a job for us.

I heard he had signed but stormed back into Cortese office and ripped up the contract after discovering he was charged £1 to park when he came to SMS to complete the deal.
