Minty Posted 9 July, 2011 Share Posted 9 July, 2011 Well, there's a interesting little twist. I've lost count of how many players have been released over the years, or moved to other/lower clubs because they weren't 'good enough' for us or other reasons, and as we slipped down the leagues, quite a few of them overtook us on the way back up. Monk, Mike Williamson, Matt Mills, Brian Howard, Boa Morte, Stephen Crainey, Jutkiewicz, Nile Ranger, must be others... One of them had to come back eventually! Not seen Monk that much since he left but certainly aware that he has been a very key part of Swansea's defence for awhile now, and is highly rated by them - he was their captain I believe. A welcome signing if indeed it is happening.
SuperMikey Posted 9 July, 2011 Share Posted 9 July, 2011 Hmm...that's an interesting (potential) signing. Is he not about 34 by now?
Thorpe-le-Saint Posted 9 July, 2011 Share Posted 9 July, 2011 Blimey, didn't see that one coming. The only thing I can remember about his previous Saints career is that he had a hernia operation (which is odd), but he has been top draw for Swansea so I would certainly welcome him. Chez Posted 9 July, 2011 Share Posted 9 July, 2011 boy was he **** for Saints when stuck out at right back for Saints back in the day. A lot water under the bridge since then though. I have to ask, if he has been "top draw" for Swansea why are they allowing him to leave? Also is he a big ball winning type like Jaidi? Just what we need if so. Turkish Posted 9 July, 2011 Share Posted 9 July, 2011 A ginger? FFs that's all we need. What with the sales manager quitting, car parking charges and slow replies to emails we are now signing a f*cking ginger. Whatever next FFs.

Matthew Le God Posted 9 July, 2011 Share Posted 9 July, 2011 If he has been "top draw" for Swansea why are they allowing him to leave? They aren't in the Championship anymore. He was good enough to captain them to promotion however.
SuperMikey Posted 9 July, 2011 Share Posted 9 July, 2011 Would prefer us to sign somebody that plays like Jaidi who's in his mid-20s rather than an injury-prone 32 year old. Still, the Swansea fans rate him very highly when he's fit and he did pretty well for us before at CB.

S-Clarke Posted 9 July, 2011 Share Posted 9 July, 2011 Swansea fans don't think it'll happen: He has struggled with injuries but he's still very good at Championship level. I'd be surprised if he leaves us though, because he'll feature in the Premier League and is still our club captain. Lined up to become part of our backroom staff in the future seemingly too. I'd personally be disappointed to see him go. No chance of that, Brendan see's him a a real club man and wants him to work behind the scenes with the youngsters when his footie career is over

Monk is almost the complete opposite of the type of player we seem to be after, but for every few good young players with potential, we are going to need the head of mature player, who has been and done it. Monk is a perfect signing in that respect.

Saint Malc Posted 9 July, 2011 Share Posted 9 July, 2011 I used to think Seabourne was the dogz until Peterborough away last season where he got run ragged by CMS. He's still much better than Monk though, who's a bit of a donkey IMO.

VectisSaint Posted 9 July, 2011 Share Posted 9 July, 2011 We can count him in our starting XI as an academy product, along with Lallana and Chamberlain. Although he had already played in the League for Torquay before we signed him as an apprentice. I know we need a new CB, but don't really see GM as the answer I was expecting, was thinking more of a medium to long term Jaidi replacement. Still Monk could certainly do a job for us next season if he does join, has been top drawer for Swansea in last few seasons.
Andy_Porter Posted 9 July, 2011 Share Posted 9 July, 2011 This would be an amazing signing. Every bit as good as Fonte from what I've seen. Him, Cork and a new striker/wide player in and we'd be set for a promotion push IMO. Would probably be a good idea to try and get Martin out on loan until January... Matthew Le God Posted 9 July, 2011 Share Posted 9 July, 2011 (edited) I used to think Seabourne was the dogz until Peterborough away last season where he got run ragged by CMS. He's still much better than Monk though, who's a bit of a donkey IMO. - Monk has been a Championship regular for a number of years (and captained a team promoted to the Premier League). - Seaborne has never played above League One, and has a number of weaknesses (particularly in the air and positionally). I'll admit I haven't seen much of Monk in recent years, but I doubt you have either. I still however think it unlikely Seaborne is as good as Monk or "much better" as you put it. There is no "u" in Seaborne btw Edited 9 July, 2011 by Matthew Le God
VectisSaint Posted 9 July, 2011 Share Posted 9 July, 2011 Maybe the new trend is to sign players with 4-letter surnames ending in K. Expect Ji-Sung Park next.

Minty Posted 9 July, 2011 Share Posted 9 July, 2011 IMO, whoever we sign is likely to come in for a season or two to allow Martin to develop and settle into the side, and then within 2 seasons time I fully expect Martin to be a first choice centre back. Monk fits the bill well IMO, experienced now, but who probably only has a few years left in him at the top(ish) level

We aren't going to be signing many medium/long term players while in this division. We need experience to compliment the youth and I think Monk is perfect really. A 20-30 year old Jaidi would be playing in the Premiership, we can attract those sort of players when we're in the Premiership but now someone like Monk is about as good as we're going to get. Will be a starter for a couple of seasons and hopefully by then we will have been promoted.
saintjay77 Posted 9 July, 2011 Share Posted 9 July, 2011 Didn't we let him go cause he was always getting injured? I saw his last game for us I think. Pre season friendly against Exeter back when we had the invisible tin man on our books. Think his equedorian mate got a game that day too. Anyway, that game Monk did his knee in again and think it ruled him out for the season. Was let go the following summer. Was always rated but unlucky with his knee. If that's all behind him then great. That kind of experience along with Jadhi will only help seaborne and Martin. Although not sure 5 CB's will be happy competing for 2 spots so someone could move on.

Matthew Le God Posted 9 July, 2011 Share Posted 9 July, 2011 We poached Theo from Swindon, Kenwnye as well maybe? Lallana from Bournemouth. Still owe them 25% of any fee if we ever sell him. A huge percentage of youth players move around. Just look at the 15 new 1st year scholars Saints took on this summer, a number were at other club from 8 to 16 years old.
