Rod Le Shearer Posted 8 July, 2011 Share Posted 8 July, 2011 This is the punch-line in a big article from TV2, a serious tv-channel which also happen to employ Claus for their PL football show. Basically,Claus says Saints are in dialogue, with a view to sign Erlend Hanstvedt, a left footed defender who can play both LB and CB. He was with Belgium side Gent, but is now a free agent. Claus is apparantly aiding him as a consultant, having strong ties with Saints n`all. Having seen a lot of Hanstvedt when he played for Brann in Norway, I reckon he`s a decent player..but no better than what we`ve got for those positions. trousers Posted 8 July, 2011 Share Posted 8 July, 2011 Erlend Hanstveit (born 28 January 1981 in Bergen) is a Norwegian footballer. Hailing from Osterøy, he joined Norwegian Premier League team Brann in June 1998 despite interest from big clubs like PSV Eindhoven, Leeds United and Manchester United, with whom he had a trial in December 1997. Originally a midfielder, he gradually became a first team regular at Brann as well as the Norway national under-21 football team, playing 27 international U-21 matches in total. During 2001–02, Erlend Hanstveit converted to defence, settling in the left back position, where he has played since. On 28 January 2004, his 23rd birthday, Hanstveit made his debut for the senior national team. Hanstveit became one of the mainstays in Brann, with over 200 Norwegian Premier League matches and over 270 matches in total. During his 10-year career in Brann, Hanstveit won one Premiership gold, two silver, and two bronze, in addition to the 2004 Norwegian Cup and Norwegian Cup silver in 1999. He was also the club's vice-captain from 2004 to 2008. In early December 2008, he joined Celtic on a week-long trial but failed to win a contract with the Scottish Premier League club.[2] However, he did not accept Brann's contract offer either, due to his wish to play abroad. During the winter break of 2008–09 he joined the Belgian team KAA Gent, coached by Michel Preud'homme.[3]

JRM Posted 8 July, 2011 Share Posted 8 July, 2011 I liked the old days when the extent of our foreign signings would be a scandinavian "english style" pro.

1976_Child Posted 8 July, 2011 Share Posted 8 July, 2011 question: is a club allowed to sign a free-agent outside the window? If a player is not with a club then it wouldn't technically be a 'transfer'. Or he could just loan himself to the club.
Matthew Le God Posted 8 July, 2011 Share Posted 8 July, 2011 (edited) Translation... Erlend Hanstveit may be the next man in southern England Southampton. With the help of Claus Lundekvam, who for years was captain of the English Championship club's defender now in dialogue about a possible transition. In search of left- - There is interest from Southampton who is looking for a left-legged defender. The advantage of Erlend Hanstveit is that he can play both left back and central defender, says Claus Lundekvam to TV 2 Sport. The former Saints defender believes Hanstveit is excellent in English football. - I think that Erlend with its physics, player awareness and tactical facing in prudence certainly can compete in the Championship, one of the toughest physical leagues in Europe, says Lundekvam. Contacted Lundekvam It was Hanstveit himself contacted Lundekvam to inquire about Southampton. - Erlend called me, and it's just a pleasure to be able to contribute. I know the owners of the club well and he wondered if I could use my contacts to help ensure that a transition is in order, says Lundekvam. - How far away is Hanstveit a transition? - This is the very early stages, so we'll see. We are in dialogue with the club and we'll see how we address this further, he says. Could be the fifth Norwegian Saints Erlend Hanstveit contract with the Belgian Ghent has expired and he can thus be free to Southampton as a Bosman player. Before the full-back went to Ghent in 2009, he brought more than 200 Premier League matches for the Fire. In addition to Claus Lundekvam, the Norwegians Jo Tessem, Stig Johansen Egil Østenstad played for Southampton. 1976_Child Posted 8 July, 2011 Share Posted 8 July, 2011 That doesn't really make sense as a question. sure it does! I'm asking what the rules are concerning a club signing a player who is not currently signed to any club. Is it classified as a 'transfer' and therefore against the rules to happen outside the transfer windows. And if so, could the player just loan himself to the club until the window opens. I guess the question is, would the league allow him to be registered or not. I'm talking in the abstract, not necessarily about this chap.

You need to be owned by someone, to be loaned to someone else. A "free transfer loan" is an oxymoron. There is a transfer window for free transfers, which is longer than that of the normal transfer window and is similar to that of the loan window. Of course I realize that a player can't actually be loaned until he is under contract to a club.
SNSUN Posted 8 July, 2011 Share Posted 8 July, 2011 Free Transfer? Well I don't know what he's like, but if it's a fairly inexpensive contract, then adding squad depth can only be a good thing.

Still, the question has to be asked why have we been linked with so many LBs? Have a suspicion the Harding to Forest rumors might have legs.
