Swindon council have announced that they are removing funding for speed cameras.

What are people’s thoughts on this?

I personally think that even though the gov/police have been using them to raise funds they are still very important. I don't really have that much time for people who moan about them due to the very simple strategy that can be used to ensure that they you never get fined.

I don't think they're physically removing them, just that they're not prepared to fund the upkeep of them anymore. They are entirely right to point to the fact that only 6% of accidents are caused by speeding and yet the vast majority of the government's road safety funding is being "invested" in speed camera technology. The money would be better spent covering a wider range of causes of accidents (i.e. the other 94% of causes).

Where do you get those figures? The accidents may not have been caused by speeding but if they were not speeding they would probably not have died or destroyed something.

It has nothing whatsoever to do with the fact that the Leader of the Council has been caught five times by them and lost his licence. Nothing whatsoever. Really.

And of course every single voting member of the council only voted in favour of the proposal because of the leader being caught five times...

What is really strange about this "story" is that all the speed cameras were removed from Swindon's roads nearly a year ago on the instruction of the Council Cabinet, a small body controlled by the Leader of the Council.

Now we have a full council "vote" on what, quite frankly, is a dead issue.

Are they going to stop the police one that sits on the bridge just before the Swindon junction above the motorway?

It moves, and has nothing to do with Swindon Borough Council. Sometimes it's on J15 and sometimes it's down a couple of bridges. In all the time I have been travelling to Swindon I have only ever seen it once, when I went past it at 90. And I never got a ticket so heaven knows what speed it was set to.

That tends to be how Tories operate.

I went past it at about 85 nearly four weeks ago, so figure I must be reasonably in the clear by now.
