NickG Posted 7 July, 2011 Share Posted 7 July, 2011 (edited) Cork is an ok player. Maybe bit more exciting player than Forte and N'Guessan. personally put him at bit above fonte and lambert for various reasons although they were good signings and got us promoted. S-Clarke Posted 7 July, 2011 Share Posted 7 July, 2011 good signings, but not as big step as this imho I think Lambert was an important signing for us, because it showed everyone that we now had a club that could compete financially. We'd also landed ourselves a player that could get us out of this league. Cork could be as important in the long-run and it's a great addition. Jez Posted 7 July, 2011 Share Posted 7 July, 2011 Reminds me of the David Prutton signing, which I was excited about at the time. Ex England Under 21 and all that. Hopefully he can continue to improve however and not stagnate like Prutton did.

Rory Posted 7 July, 2011 Share Posted 7 July, 2011 We signed Cork three years ago, so I am not excited about this permanent deal, just looking forward to his career thriving as we progress. The flurry of additions we brought in under the first six months of Pardew's reign were a lot more exciting.
patred44 Posted 7 July, 2011 Share Posted 7 July, 2011 Fonte's signing was a better feeling, as we were a struggling Div One team with -10pts at the time and he looked outstanding in the Championship with Palace.
St Marco Posted 7 July, 2011 Share Posted 7 July, 2011 Lambert or Fonte by far. Huge signings for us that filled a gaping void. You could say that without the Lambert signing we would not even be in the championship now and thus Cork probably would not of signed. It is a big signing for the club and hopefully means others with PL potential will follow to the club too!

Fonte signed in January 2010, so we'd long surpassed the -10 penalty.
Fitzhugh Fella Posted 7 July, 2011 Share Posted 7 July, 2011 (edited) Personally feel this is the most exciting signing for a while. We are moving up to this level and are signing a player who was performing so well already at this level that Burnley, and their fans, were desperate to keep. He is techincally gifted and athletic - can play CM, defensive CM, RB, CB. Played for England at every level to his current - U21. Wanted by many clubs (rumoured to be) Most importantly could get better and better - if we get to top half of prem over next 4 years, he will likely to have a lot to do with it and will still be good enough. Would Danns, CMS, Nugent etc. Struggling to think of a signing that I found this exciting for years....really am struggling! Who was last signing that excited you??!! NickG - no offence but you really are the king of spin and you need to calm down a tad. He is a good proven Championship player - nothing more nothing less, I think he will be an asset but he aint no obvious world beater (otherwise Leicester would no doubt have bought him) and Stuart Pearce didn't think he was worthy of a kick in the recent U21s tournament. Let's keep our feet on the ground and hope he will prosper from being at a club on a permanent contract. It will be interesting to see how he develops for sure and I welcome his arrival. There's a good chance he will improve into a Prem player, but your post is a bit OTT. Edited 7 July, 2011 by Fitzhugh Fella

I hear what others say about Fonte and Lambert but feel they were players that we got for the level we were with a bit of money. This, I presonally feel, says more for our future and anbition and how we are seen. What other decent signings have we had in last 20 odd years, who teams above us would want and was still on the up? - not many why are you so in awe of Leicester? dubai_phil Posted 7 July, 2011 Share Posted 7 July, 2011 Fonte was very good signing, but Palace were desperate for money and he went from struggling championship side to top league 1 side - don't remember anyone else in for him?? Yes Nick, but as Patred said, at the time we were on -10 in L1 and we got a very highly rated NpC player to join us, who went on to become our player of the season. Have you HONESTLY forgotten what those days felt like? We had only just survived as a club by a mixture of luck and timing and we sign a very good Championship player. Jeez, not that long before hand we where so broke we were playing Kids.... Who cared whether anyone else was "in for him"? that was for me the sign that maybe there really was some hope we could actually get out of that mess. St Marco Posted 7 July, 2011 Share Posted 7 July, 2011 10 or so of those Burnley games were in the Prem. Indeed. Puncheon played 16 but yet somehow we are not welcoming him back with open arms My point is if Cork and Burnley were in the PL and we got him then that would be a big drop for him. But on paper you have to say the drop from Burnley to Southampton today is not that big a drop. We are pretty close in terms of quality level. Fonte went from mid table championship side to near the bottom league one side. Obviously we were not going to stay in that position for long but in football you never know, it was a gamble for him. One that paid off eventually. With Cork i don't think it is the same gamble. The rebuilding job to get us back here is done. Fonte was a huge factor in that. Cork is part of the building to get us up another league.

hamster Posted 7 July, 2011 Share Posted 7 July, 2011 All new signatures interest me for one reason or another. In recent times I sense a change in the balance whereby any hopefuls must convince us that they really really want to wear the stripes for the right reasons, I Luke. Regarding getting excited, I'm afraid to say that once you've lived through a signing making the News at Ten headlines, they all pale. Those who don't remember that day will never understand what us oldies experienced that day. The Potter's Heron is as much a part of our history as the traing ground. Coincidentally, I saw a Heron today, my favourite bird.
