Saint-Armstrong Posted 7 July, 2011 Share Posted 7 July, 2011 4.38pm: Sunday will be the last issue of the News of the World. 4.38pm: James Murdoch is saying this Sunday's News of the World will be the final issue. 4.39pm: Colin Myler will edit final edition and all the News of the World revenue will go to good causes, James Murdoch says in his statement. Also, Cameron and Government decide that no decision will be made on BSkyB and Murdoch's approach until this issue has been fully resolved, and investigated. Thoughts? http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/blog/2011/jul/07/news-of-the-world-phone-hacking-live-coverage

No we don't. Just interested in stopping morally abhorrent practices. I have no issue with the Telegraph... generally a very decent paper written intelligently. The Sun, Daily Mail, Daily Star, Daily Mirror, Daily Express and well you get the idea are all moronic. I don't object to a well thought out opinion that is opposite to mine as is expressed in the Telegraph for example, but I do object to the reactionary irrational ****e that appears in the red and black tabloids. Far more Labour there than Tories, DESPERATE to get back in bed with NI they were, pathetic. Even Ed Balls and his horrible missus Yvette Cooper were there after the pasting they've taken. And there in, I believe, is the problem. NI are seen as having too much power and politicians, of all shades, are going to want to bring it down, or at least chop it off at the knees. To be fair Coulsdon did the honourable thing and resigned, unlike a certain ex editor I will not/ dare not mention. Despite insisiting it was nothing to do with him. In other words, lying through his back teeth. Who's Ed's press secretary again - oh yeah, an ex NI employee....... Most accept that a small executive minority poisoned it for the majority and that working for NI doesn't excluded you from the human race.
Gigersaint Posted 8 July, 2011 Share Posted 8 July, 2011 Good. The NOWT was a brilliant paper for sport (as is the sun). Most people would be lost without a replacement. Whether Dune is sincere in his post or not, I've always brought The Sun and NOTW for exactly this reason, I've always found other tabloids a little lacking in Sport coverage and for overall match reports during the Season. Despite both tabloids fall out with NC last season it didn't stop me buying either of them, Other than my love of Saints I just love football in general and always just found these papers to have the best overall coverage throughout the Premier and Football Leagues. I understand that both papers may not be everyones cup of tea and are regularly put down on here and that is fair and down to their preference or political persuasion, but aside from that and for coverage during the football season for match reports, stats, etc, I think they offer the best football reporting overall. If a Sun on Sunday happens to be the replacement for NOTW I think that is what everyone expected, although the only other thought I had was if the Sun has also been involved phone tapping too considering the close links between both tabloids? Not really knowing too much about the press I wasn't sure this is a possibility and what would happen then?

My biggest concern with the passing of the NOWT to be replaced by The Sun on Sunday is that the mondays edition of The Sun (great for footie write ups) will be a carbon copy of Sundays edition. The passing of the NOWT is a real loss and I only hope that a new brand is launched separate from the Sun. The fuddy duddy Guardian reader types can all gloat but what cannot be disputed is that both papers we No. 1 when it came to sales. Both papers delivered what people wanted. dune Posted 10 July, 2011 Share Posted 10 July, 2011 The worst papers out are The Daily Mirror and it's dull sister papers The Sunday Mirror and The People. Both these papers have lost their traditional base of readers due to views expressed. They made the mistake of thinking Labour voters = Liberal voters. The Sun and the NOWT had a far better nose for reality and the fact is that British people are mainly Conservative in their views even if they are too thick to allign their beliefs with how they vote. Wow. you really have surpassed yourself this time dune. This statement is only true in your blinkered little world. Anyway, have a read back through all of the comments made so far relating to the Sun and NotW. The vast majority of people admit they only buy them due to their excellent sports coverage, and I can't deny that either. On the handful of occasions I have ever bought either papaer it was solely for this reason also. You don't genuinely believe that they are the UK's biggest selling newspapers because people agree with their political opinions do you? Take away the sports coverage and they wouldn't sell half as much copy as they do. In fact, they would lose pretty much all credibility as a serious read, much like the Mirror or the Daily Star

You keep thinking that, but Murdoch KNOWS differently and that is why he has built up his empire so succesfully - he is in tune with the public mood.
