SuperMikey Posted 6 July, 2011 Posted 6 July, 2011 Jake Thomson was a very ordinary player for us, so imagine my surprise when he scored this goal against Farnborough in pre-season 09/10 - I was sitting about 2m away from where he was. 3.50 for the goal
SNOWY Posted 6 July, 2011 Posted 6 July, 2011 I remember Nicky Banger scored a hatrick in the league cup (Rochdale?) hardly played again.
lambertsrightleg Posted 6 July, 2011 Posted 6 July, 2011 The one where Mickey Evans knocked himself out and scored at the same time. That was pretty spectacular. i remember that!! robbie slater also scored in a 2-0 win over west ham. april 1997
Prince Jazzbo Posted 6 July, 2011 Posted 6 July, 2011 For me a strange one was Nick Holmes punching the ball over the bar in his own penalty box to give away a penalty against Arsenal in the league cup at highbury in 78. He later claimed that he blacked out.
John Boy Saint Posted 6 July, 2011 Posted 6 July, 2011 Nick Holmes scoring from the half-way line (ish) v Watford League cup Nick Holmes (again) scoring the goal of the game League Cup Final 1979 From the same game David Peach in acres of space all alone forcing Peter Shilton to commit himself early only for Peachy to take the ball round his helplessly sprawling body to slot home for a moment that will live with me for ever. Holmes lob as above Vignal from just over the halfway line v Leicester Regarding the Baird Exocet, I recall it as Bale shaped to take the free kick, then "passed" right to Surman in the centre who stepped over it to great groaning from the crowd as they had also been sold the dummy, only for Baird to approach the ball like an express train viciously smash it into the net. It was the moment of stunned silence from the crowd as the ball tried to escape through the back of the net that was very noticeable. Probably loads that I have missed, didn't Smudger have a triple save v the Arse that he had no right to save.
KK the 2nd Posted 6 July, 2011 Posted 6 July, 2011 Terry Curran. Woeful winger. Swung his leg at the ball in the box at the Archers Road end and scored his one and only goal for us. Against Leeds in the League Cup Semi 2nd Leg that took us back to Wembley I remember the goal but I thought it was at the Milton end?
Made in Southampton Posted 6 July, 2011 Posted 6 July, 2011 Absolutely has to be Chris Marsdens John Barnes esq mazey run against Ipswich. You know, the one where he had to look round to make sure it had gone in.
Bananaman Posted 6 July, 2011 Posted 6 July, 2011 Delaps double against away at Arsenal was pretty special, so nearly won it for us!!
Badger Posted 6 July, 2011 Posted 6 July, 2011 Hugh Fisher's injury time equaliser v Villa, January 1976.
krissyboy31 Posted 6 July, 2011 Posted 6 July, 2011 Not sure if Barry Horne counts as ordinary but his goal at The Dell against Bolton in the cup.
sammysaint Posted 6 July, 2011 Posted 6 July, 2011 games i went to and saw it live would be 1.Blaneys save 2.Delap vs spurs 3.Griffits 1st goal vs blackburn 4.Telfers Belter 5.Dodd vs the skates
saints-cris Posted 6 July, 2011 Posted 6 July, 2011 Delaps double against away at Arsenal was pretty special, so nearly won it for us!! Bloody van Persie, heartbreaker!
Saint Stimp Posted 6 July, 2011 Posted 6 July, 2011 Delaps double against away at Arsenal was pretty special, so nearly won it for us!! Speaking of Delap...
Gemmel Posted 6 July, 2011 Posted 6 July, 2011 (edited) Glen Cockerill away to luton in the Milk/ Littlewoords cup. Don't think any footage exists. The top ten players in the world today, would sell their granny to score that goal Edited 6 July, 2011 by Gemmel
norwaysaint Posted 6 July, 2011 Posted 6 July, 2011 Niemi triple save vs Vierra @ St Marys. can't remember when but Nick Holmes scoring and for a moment being Pele Beatties equaliser against Fulham just before half time after being 2 down. Everyone knew what was going to happen second half, even Fulham! Yep, all very ordinary players for us. How come nobody's mentioned MLT yet?
chocco boxo Posted 6 July, 2011 Posted 6 July, 2011 Glen Cockerill away to luton in the Milk/ Littlewoords cup. Don't think any footage exists. The top ten players in the world today, would sell their granny to score that goal I was there ...what a shot if I remember right it seemed both feet were of the ground when he struck it!
Jimmy_D Posted 7 July, 2011 Posted 7 July, 2011 Although Niemi was no ordinary player for us... it wasn't his job to be up front, and that shot he had that went off the bar...
KMondo Posted 7 July, 2011 Posted 7 July, 2011 Stuart Ripley's 45 minutes of wing-wizardry against Newcastle...before lapsing back into mediocrity for the rest of his Saints career.
Reynoldson!! Posted 7 July, 2011 Posted 7 July, 2011 Graeme Murty 40 yard screamer, think it was a preseason game
stinhk Posted 7 July, 2011 Posted 7 July, 2011 Wasn't "ordinary saints" meant to imply outstanding moments from otherwise nothingy players? Hence the two examples in the OP? Seems odd that some people would put Beattie and Niemi in that list, or even CMFG who was our player of the year. ........or Ron Davies, Terry Paine and Nick Holmes for that matter. Far from ordinary.
Kingsland Codger Posted 7 July, 2011 Posted 7 July, 2011 Casey Keller's late, late save from Matt Taylor's close range blaster against you-know-who in November 2004 made sure we won the match.
Stud mark of doom Posted 7 July, 2011 Posted 7 July, 2011 Benali being left unmarked at the far post by Leicester.
hughieslastminutegoal Posted 7 July, 2011 Posted 7 July, 2011 Nick Holmes scoring from the half-way line (ish) v Watford League cup Nick Holmes (again) scoring the goal of the game League Cup Final 1979 You cannot possibly describe NH as "otherwise unimportant, ordinary or otherwise forgettable " My vote goes to: Mike Hennigan for his one and only appearance in place of Tony Knapp - against Derby County when he managed to injure his elbow in the first half and get taken off, never to be seen again. That's all I can remember about him - a ginger(ish)-haired bloke breaking his elbow. If he'd stayed on, and Tony Godfrey hadn't got concussed putting Cliff Huxford in goal, I'm sure we'd have lost. In the event we won 6-4. (in the good ol' days without subs).
Saint Garrett Posted 7 July, 2011 Posted 7 July, 2011 This was the one I meant...... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kjkR91QEjFg
kpturner Posted 7 July, 2011 Posted 7 July, 2011 I remember the goal but I thought it was at the Milton end?Wrong!
kpturner Posted 7 July, 2011 Posted 7 July, 2011 Good spot - thx my bad. That dreadful Americanism is surely worth an infraction?
