its getting higher every time he makes a prediction, by next month he will definitely have us going up

No it isn't my prediction for 17th/18th for the ned of the season remains the same. I didn't realise the season ended in September. I can excuse your ignorance on the basis that you are newcomer to the football season.

my prediction of 17th at the end of the season still stands.

Which 16 teams do you think are better equipped than Saints over the next 45 games? List them? Your prediction also ignores it is very likely Saints will make some big signing(s) in the next three weeks and many other Championship clubs have been significantly weakened compared to last season. Quite who these 16 teams are, I'm intrigued to know (along with your logic for picking them).

We're the team weakening our rivals. ;)

We could knock Burnley out of the race by getting Jay. That's 3 key players we've nicked from them, they must love us.

Exactly. That is the 8th place team from the Championship 2010/11 out of the race (possibly).

Plus Leeds, Cardiff, Middlesbrough, Millwall, Reading, Blackpool, Birmingham and a number of others are all weaker than last season.

It wasn't just a theory, it was a question.

Which are the 16 better teams? And why do you think those in particular are stronger?

You won't like the answer, but they will be revealed in the course of time after football has been played on the pitches. To go through each team in turn would take far too long.

I am prepared for a tirade of criticism over what you will rightly say is an unsatisfactory answer !

I'd indeed an offer was put to Howe and he chose burnley over us, IF being the operative word, would love to know what he's thinking now?!

Lol...

Up the Saints.

Do you disagree when I say Burnley, Leeds, Cardiff, Middlesbrough, Millwall, Reading, Blackpool, Birmingham and a number of others are all weaker than last season?

How do you think newly promoted Norwich, Leeds and Millwall came 2nd, 7th and 9th? Do you think their squads are better than Saints'? Didn't look in in the second half of 2009/10 when all in the same league.

I'd still love you to name the 16 teams...?

Living up in Norwich i follow them very closely. They strengthened the team very early in the summer and hit the ground running. Also feel last year the NPC was a bit weaker in general. Norwich also won league 1 very easily, we came 2nd in league 1 although this was largely due to a bad start.

Cork, De Ridder and Fox not improvements that "strengthen the team"? Beating Leeds United 3-1 in the Championship and Torquay United 4-1 in the Carling Cup with Saints reserves, not "hitting the ground running"?

Also feel last year the NPC was a bit weaker in general.

Explain how these teams are stronger than last season, Burnley, Leeds, Cardiff, Middlesbrough, Millwall, Reading, Blackpool, Birmingham? All of those strong Championship teams last year or relegated teams from the Premier League, all have lost a number of key players and not replaced them with like for like.

Norwich also won league 1 very easily, we came 2nd in league 1.

Norwich 2009/10 earned 95 points

Saints 2010/11 earned 92 points

Not exactly a lot in it over a 46 game season!

I'd like to place a wager that we finish 16th or higher.

Does anyone think we can win the league? Or get automatic?

Yes.

It's possible. But I'd say the odds are about right - 14/1 to win the league and about 4/1 to be promoted when I last checked.

That's to say, about a 6% chance of winning the league and a 20% chance of promotion.

After having read through this thread again and amongst a lot of posts, a few insults, and lengthy debate, I think the gem of the lot was two posts between Itchen_Block4 and CB Fry who weren't too far out with their observations in just a few sentences each.

1. The squad is pretty good already, it needs very little doing to it to be competitive.

2. The team spirit is great and improvements need to be careful and done in moderation to keep that up.

3. The best deals are to be had later in the window when players decide they want out.

4. Work is being done on additions and has been for some time. We don't want to be shafted by greedy clubs and agents by going in too soon.

5. There are loads of Championship quality players out there, it's not the end of the world if we miss out on some of them.

6. AOC will only be sold on our terms if he puts his foot down and demands to leave. It's unlikely IMO.

7. The club keeps its dealings quiet. There has probably been a lot of interest that hasn't been leaked to the press.

Agree with pretty much all of this except the AOC bit. His departure this window is an inevitability as far as I am concerned. It hasn't happened yet for the same reasons you outline above as to why we haven't signed anyone either.

Everyone is playing the waiting game to get a better deal.

We'll sign a few decent players to improve the squad. The chances are though that a significant number may not actually arrive until the middle or end of August.

You posted this on the 5TH day of the transfer window being open. Given the benefit of hindsight don't you think you looked an utter mug?

Au contraire, mon ami. It is only with the benefit of hindsight that two months later you are able to post your insult. The two signings, and hopefully the CB to come give the lie to those whose faith was so strong that they thought no signings meant none were needed. Oh, and this won't be news for many people, but many deals are agreed before the transfer window opens! Incroyable, je sais!

Tres bete.

Your thread was a moment of idiocy when you started it. You were called up on the idiocy at the time by many, many people (I didn't have to wait two months to contradict your nonsense, neither did half of this message board, so it would seem).

With hindsight your original thread is ten times more stupid than it started out; which is an achievement in itself. And it's telling that pretty much the only clown you could find to fit your originally quite preposterous notion was an Austrian based calamitous individual who has a huge catalogue of being proven wrong with various doom-laden predictions. Well done for grouping yourself amongst such illustrious company.

Ca marche?

Well said and further to this we still need to make signings that should have been sorted over the summer !

Did Anyone say none were needed? What was said was and widely agreed that the squad we have is a midtable one and we would need to make signings to improve on this. Obviously you now look a bit of a bell end so I don't blame you for trying to wriggle out of it.

Lets see where we are after about 6 games before people begin to count their chickens !

we will probably be around 18th I expect

Maybe a few places higher, possibly mid table, no higher.

I make it that the lowest we could be at the end of August is 5th. Are you ready to reassess your end of season prediction yet? ;)

Lol.

Spectacularly wrong predictions by Dalek and delldays.

I still can't see that we can keep up the present level of results (well, obviously we can't...we won't win all 46 league games...)

But a swift check of the odds shows:

1. We are now second favourites to win the league at about 5/1

2. We are about 2/1 to be promoted

3. We are 1/50 to finish in the top 12.

I'm assuming from point 3, that if there was a market, we'd be about 1/100 on being in the top 16.

Predicting that Saints will finish 17th or worse is about equivalent to predicting that Man Utd will lose all of their next three home league games. In other words, a very, very wild long shot.

Have we been crowned champions already and have the rest of the clubs decided that there is no need to play out the fixture list ?

No. If we'd been crowned champions already, we wouldn't be 5/1 against to wint he title, would we?

As it is, we're about evens to finish in the top six and about 100/1 to finish in the bottom six or seven.

Our points spread is around 77-78.

Of course, we could still finish bottom with just 12 points from 46 games.

Are you still offering that £100 bet that we finish outside the top sixteen? As posted previously, I'd like to place a wager please.

HTH.

define mid table (so we can re live this thread next month and once and for all, show everyone you dont have a clue)

OK mid table say 10th to 15th. I am happy for you to re-live this thread next month, which may show that you and many others don't have a clue, and my prediction of 17th at the end of the season still stands.

Soon enough, someone will moan about lack of signings, wrong signings, not enough money spent, someone spending more than us, signings not early enough

Glasgow_Saint has, unbelievably, already started, on the basis that Ajax signed some random name from a list of European free agents he copied and pasted from somewhere

Although my prediction of 17th was wrong my assertion that we needed to strengthen the team was proven right.

I hope we act more decisively in the transfer market this year or we will be in trouble.

I will make my prediction based on this !

I don't think anyone with even half a brain will listen to your precition other than to laugh at it and you.

You were predicting a bottom third finish even when it was close to mathematically impossible.

Word of advice? A period of silence would be an advisable step....
