once_bitterne Posted 4 July, 2011 Share Posted 4 July, 2011 Had a look at Ryan Dickson's twitter and page and saw a conversation between him and a former Brentford teammate now at Southend about pre-season. Interesting to see that Sturrock's approach is old skool WGS-esque running based while ours is 'no footballs sports science ' https://twitter.com/Ryandickson5
Red And White Barmy Army Posted 5 July, 2011 Share Posted 5 July, 2011 says ours does have footballs out - the new approach. used by most coaches these days - mourinho etc. strachan did the old skool method effectively because it instilled discipline into a side lacking in that department at the time. u can't just measure fitness with a bleep test at the end of pre-season to see how effective the training has been any more - u've got to measure performance fatigue etc which is best improved by having footballs out all the time so skills and routines become automatic even when fatigued. John Boy Saint Posted 5 July, 2011 Share Posted 5 July, 2011 Nowt wrong with WGS approach, we were super fit under him. Which for a team of, in the grand scheme of the time, ordinary players paid off, especially when we would win games in the last 10 minutes mainly through being conditioned to play 100+ minutes. egreog Posted 5 July, 2011 Share Posted 5 July, 2011 Frankly, Saints in pre season appears to have consistently fallen short as "slow starters" is an understatement! Anything new has got to be worth trying as I believe if there was a league table over the past 20 years of the first 5 games of the season Saints would be propping up the lot!! Could this year be different?? Hope so!

Dalek2003 Posted 5 July, 2011 Share Posted 5 July, 2011 It's amazing to think that Sturrock even managed us in the top flight of English football - what was that all about?! A complete bloody cock up ! The reason why Wurzel was chosen at such a crucial time in the clubs history is a scandal that still needs to be explained and i am sure one day it will be ! The9 Posted 5 July, 2011 Share Posted 5 July, 2011 Yawn. Sturrock's record at Saints would have easily kept us up.
The9 Posted 5 July, 2011 Share Posted 5 July, 2011 If nothing else I love Ryan Dickson's Twitter pic : In more important news, this photo is also on a bunch of mugs (the ceramic kind) currently being sold in the club shop. Some of which have "SAINTS 3 WALSALL 1" emblazoned on them, in what already looks like a ridiculously small-time piece of marketing from a time most Saints fans will hope to forget soon. Thedelldays Posted 5 July, 2011 Share Posted 5 July, 2011 Yawn. Sturrock's record at Saints would have easily kept us up. record what...over a handful of games...take out the new manager effect he had..he was a disaster. never has a manager really been successful in recent years by jumping two leagues to the prem.. I saw his style of football for years and it was dreadful....

We played some pretty good expansive, open, direct (not long ball) football, and it was certainly preferable to what followed the season after. John Boy Saint Posted 5 July, 2011 Share Posted 5 July, 2011 Yawn. Sturrock's record at Saints would have easily kept us up. I always thought that he would have kept us up if the Prima Donna's in the side had not seen him kicked out, he got Claus scoring and seemed to tame Fabrice into being a team player. And before I get jumped all over, we really became a force to be reckoned with after he went even with Teflon Arry the god of All football at the helm.
