Chez Posted 4 July, 2011 Share Posted 4 July, 2011 when it comes to Nugent I just can't get that goal he scored for Preston away at Palace when he runs half the length of the pitch with the ball and finishes nicely at the end of the run. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=avYgzrIZOyE Not sure that is what we might expect on a regular basis should he sign though. Most skates can't stand him, but he had a tough time there, with arry deciding after his first game (a friendly at Yeovil I think) that he had made a mistake and from then on not playing him. His confidence must have been shot. When he got finally a chance it was out wide and from what I recall he put in a very good shift out there. By the time he got to play up front he'd almost forgotten what to do. He did miss quite a lot of one on ones, but he gets in the right positions that's for sure. I'd like to see him at our place, but then again I liked Fuller even when he wasn't scoring for us so you can see the ex skate thing doesn't worry me at all. sammysaint Posted 4 July, 2011 Share Posted 4 July, 2011 To be honest his pace would be at least 14 on FM 11. If we don't sign a pacey striker we need to give forte plenty of pre season action and work on his finishing then he would be a good player IMO

Stattmeister Posted 4 July, 2011 Share Posted 4 July, 2011 I'd be quite satisfied if we came out of this window with the current squad intact. If we then only signed Cork and Nugent, proven players at this league, I'd be satisfied. We can always supplement any "Jaidi is slow/Connolly is crocked" concerns with a couple of loan signings - in the championship we've a better chance of attracting realistic and quality targets, than in league one. Any ideas what has happened to the Keogh rumours?

I can't see Lallana, Fonte or Rickie on much less... not that I am suggesting Keogh is worth 20k! I think footballers are out to milk it as much as they can. Agents know that we're owned by a billionaire, so they'll try their best to get the most money out of us that they can. NC is clever and he'll never allow us to be taken the **** out of, which is probably why we're struggling to agree certain deals. I think you'll find when the end of the window comes and those players still haven't got their move, they'll be knocking on our door again - but hopefully, we'd have got suitable alternatives sorted by then. View From The Top Posted 4 July, 2011 Share Posted 4 July, 2011 Saw on another forum that he's demanding upwards of 20k. He is, plus a hefty signing on fee and a 4 year contract and I know Wolves have said he can "go for peanuts" which is, according to my oppo at Wolves, around £750k. I'll give him a bell tomorrow and see if he knows anything else.

And Crouch didn't do too badly for us either, for a Skate... I'd love to see Nugent here, I think he would be a good partner to Rickie. I do think he would need some time and TLC from NA to get the best out of him, since I don't think he is in the best place mentally, but that's where NA shines. What I wouldn't enjoy is the idiots in our fanbase giving him stick for being an ex-Skate. That's pretty much a certainty.
david in sweden Posted 4 July, 2011 Share Posted 4 July, 2011 I have heard David Nugent is to sign. No idea if there is any truth to this. may not sound so daft, but sadly there is a section of our fanbase who love to rubbish any player who's played for " both teams " ... even Peter Crouch (who had Pompey on his CV when he came ), had a hard time convincing some that he was an OK buy, that was of course before he played for England. dubai_phil Posted 4 July, 2011 Share Posted 4 July, 2011 NA likes playing a 4 - 2 -3 -1 type formation with the middle 3 of AOC RL & AL with options of Guly With Nugent in the middle makes sense on the right deal when Connoly/LB aren't the right sort of player. Whether it will happen or not is another matter but can see some sense in it.
PokingFun Posted 4 July, 2011 Share Posted 4 July, 2011 Just asked a mate of mine who watches a lot of the Pompey games and his words about Nugent are "Good Champs Player, quite pacy at this level, runs the channels all day long. Not a big goalscorer as doesn't get tap-ins and misses some sitters. Also commented that he is on huge money too but I think he will have to take a big drop on that front as no team will pay him what Pompey were. On the face of it would seem a decent signing. From what my mate says it suggests he is similar to Barnard but quicker and more experienced at this level. No fitness issues as played over 40 games last season for them and still only 26 years old. CWD Posted 4 July, 2011 Share Posted 4 July, 2011 I'm pretty sure (99.9%) that Nugent isn't married..... Tbh I kinda used the word 'mate' loosely! I've met him quite a few times though honest It's quite possible that I got the wrong the end of the stick and Nugent was his BM, but whatever the case, that was still said. Compare that attitude to Rickie's interview on SaintsPlayer. No comparison. However, if he joins, he'll get my support. If he could be as good for us as he was Preston, then I don't care how much of a w@nker he is!

Lighthouse Posted 4 July, 2011 Share Posted 4 July, 2011 Would be very happy if we signed Nugent. A decent player with a scoring record comparable to Sharp at this level. If anything I wish we'd signed him instead of Connolly, as Nugent is about 10 years younger and doesn't have a fettish for physiotherapy. If we can get him on a free it's a no brainer IMO. None of our lot are proven in the CCC.
Fergie Posted 5 July, 2011 Share Posted 5 July, 2011 Nugent is a prize ****. My mate (Nugent's BM at his wedding): "It must be difficult, not getting many games at the moment?" Nugent: "Don't care mate, I still get paid every week" No thanks. Umm, Nugent IS NOT married...i was at uni in Chichester last year and his girlfriend is a student there, used to pick her up a lot of the time!!! Unless he is Giggsy in disguise he isn't married!! Not thats i care, just wanted to prove you wrong! In other news, i don't think we need someone like Nugent but if Adkins nd Cortese believe in him then i will too...got a lot of trust for those two so we will see...only thing they have done since taking over which i'm still not proven wrong is Forte, but people are allowed to make mistakes i guess!! rallyboy Posted 5 July, 2011 Share Posted 5 July, 2011 the main problem with trying to sign any former pompey player is that they have been massively overpaid so now have unrealistic salary expectations. Unless he and his agent get real, we can't afford him. And the idea of 'no fee means we can pay big wages' is the road to ruin. More likely to go to Leicester, West Ham, or even someone like Swansea perhaps?

Absolute sh1te. I couldn't give a t0ss if the player played for Portsmouth in the past - if that player compliments/improves our squad, great. When Antti Niemi went there and got paid loads for doing nothing he was a legend, agent Niemi people on here called him. He took money from the skates for doing nothing. I’d see this as the same with Nugent if he came to us, especially if he were happy to take a wage drop! He helped burden the skates with additional debts, was happy to sit on their bench and do nothing, than came to us and he’ll work hard for less money! The skates will hate it, therefore I will be most happy with that scenario.
