mattyd Posted 4 July, 2011 Posted 4 July, 2011 I have heard David Nugent is to sign. No idea if there is any truth to this.
S-Clarke Posted 4 July, 2011 Posted 4 July, 2011 Have heard a few rumblings about this, but I have a feeling it's just come from football-rumours as it's all over there at the moment
S-Clarke Posted 4 July, 2011 Posted 4 July, 2011 Maybe this is why we pulled away from Sharp? £3.2m on sharp, or £0 for Nugent, who IMO is a similar player (not much difference between them ability wise tbh)
Saint Charlie Posted 4 July, 2011 Posted 4 July, 2011 Nugent is rubbish, hope this isn't true. Way too slow to form a good partnership with Rickie.
SuperSAINT Posted 4 July, 2011 Posted 4 July, 2011 I suppose the lack of fee would subsidise the wages, but I don't know about this..... Damn good finisher though.
Colinjb Posted 4 July, 2011 Posted 4 July, 2011 How could it work? Rickie providing the creative foil. Lallana/AOC providing the movement and pace and Nugent concentrating on being in the right place at the right time? Either way, would love it alone as it would really rub the blue few up the wrong way.
jjsaint Posted 4 July, 2011 Posted 4 July, 2011 would love it alone as it would really rub the blue few up the wrong way. Provided he scored the winner both home and away against them.
saintmatt Posted 4 July, 2011 Posted 4 July, 2011 I suppose the lack of fee would subsidise the wages, but I don't know about this..... Damn good finisher though. I wouldn't want Nugent (even on a free) if he came in on wages far over and above those already paid to Lallana, Fonte, Lambert etc (which he would do on a free). This would increase the likelihood of an unhappy/fractured camp manifesting imo, something we don't need
Matthew Le God Posted 4 July, 2011 Posted 4 July, 2011 I wouldn't want Nugent (even on a free) if he came in on wages far over and above those already paid to Lallana, Fonte, Lambert etc (which he would do on a free). This would increase the likelihood of an unhappy/fractured camp manifesting imo, something we don't need I reckon Lambert's new deal in July and Lallana's deal in January took their wages up significantly and that Fonte had a wage increase after promotion written into his contract (and was already quite high).
Appy Posted 4 July, 2011 Posted 4 July, 2011 I dread to think how much the OS would build up his England "career" if he was to sign.
CWD Posted 4 July, 2011 Posted 4 July, 2011 Nugent is a prize ****. My mate (Nugent's BM at his wedding): "It must be difficult, not getting many games at the moment?" Nugent: "Don't care mate, I still get paid every week" No thanks.

Dibden Purlieu Saint Posted 4 July, 2011 Posted 4 July, 2011 Nugent is a prize ****. My mate (Nugent's BM at his wedding): "It must be difficult, not getting many games at the moment?" Nugent: "Don't care mate, I still get paid every week" No thanks. Does that also make your mate a Cock as he is his best man? And then by association make yourself a cock?
The Godfather Posted 4 July, 2011 Posted 4 July, 2011 Nugent is a good championship striker but not the type of striker we need. IMHO.
Prince Jazzbo Posted 4 July, 2011 Posted 4 July, 2011 Apparently he wore a Saints shirt on his first day of training at Pompey as a wind up.
CWD Posted 4 July, 2011 Posted 4 July, 2011 #ahem# Either your mate or Nugent himself is a liar. Haha I should point out this was a little while before the Skates got caught out... Does that also make your mate a Cock as he is his best man? And then by association make yourself a cock? No, I'm also friends with Nelson Mandela so it cancels out.
CWD Posted 4 July, 2011 Posted 4 July, 2011 Apparently he wore a Saints shirt on his first day of training at Pompey as a wind up. OK I take it back, he's a legend
sambosa75 Posted 4 July, 2011 Posted 4 July, 2011 I was always under the impression Nugent was quite pacey. Has he lost this with all the injuries now? To be honest, you can't really fault Nugent for getting paid a shedload by the skates. At the time his stock was quite high. There is no way any side would give a comparable wage now though. Presumably he has a young family and may well be settled on the south coast. An option to stay down here at Saints may suit him. I remember him being a good player for Preston and wouldn't have minded him back then. If Adkins can get him on a free, with reasonable wages I would look at it as a shrewd piece of business.
Saint_Jonny Posted 4 July, 2011 Posted 4 July, 2011 don't really get the hate on this thread if I'm honest. Good championship level player. If we could get him in on reasonable wages we'd be laughing.
Saint Fan CaM Posted 4 July, 2011 Posted 4 July, 2011 don't really get the hate on this thread if I'm honest. Good championship level player. If we could get him in on reasonable wages we'd be laughing. This.
View From The Top Posted 4 July, 2011 Posted 4 July, 2011 don't really get the hate on this thread if I'm honest. Good championship level player. If we could get him in on reasonable wages we'd be laughing. Yep, although Maynard would be my 1st choice.
Gorgiesaint Posted 4 July, 2011 Posted 4 July, 2011 don't really get the hate on this thread if I'm honest. Good championship level player. If we could get him in on reasonable wages we'd be laughing. Agreed, and I don't think Adkins/Cortese would bring him in on big money to upset the squad.
Pedro Posted 4 July, 2011 Posted 4 July, 2011 He was a good striker until Redkrapp paid shedloads for him and didn't select him. Could be worth a chance with some decent training/coaching with the best facilities.
CWD Posted 4 July, 2011 Posted 4 July, 2011 I went to school in Portsmouth so have a lot of skate friends. Don't be fooled by him winning player of the year, many of them were glad to see the back of him. It's not like me to write off any player before he's joined, but I just don't think he's for us.
VectisSaint Posted 4 July, 2011 Posted 4 July, 2011 I went to school in Portsmouth so have a lot of skate friends. They have schools in Portsmouth. I always think its a good day when you learn something new.
aintforever Posted 4 July, 2011 Posted 4 July, 2011 Agreed, and I don't think Adkins/Cortese would bring him in on big money to upset the squad. Don't think it would, the players will all be on different wages and they all understand that people who go on frees generally get big money. If anything it would motivate the other players.
lee_saint Posted 4 July, 2011 Posted 4 July, 2011 Nugent is a prize ****. My mate (Nugent's BM at his wedding): "It must be difficult, not getting many games at the moment?" Nugent: "Don't care mate, I still get paid every week" No thanks. I'm pretty sure (99.9%) that Nugent isn't married.....
Gemmel Posted 4 July, 2011 Posted 4 July, 2011 Looks like this one might have some legs. There is a fairly well placed guy on their site (He was way ahead of the media with Norris and Pearce) who reckons he is on his way to Saints.

S-Clarke Posted 4 July, 2011 Posted 4 July, 2011 Looks like this one might have some legs. There is a fairly well placed guy on their site (He was way ahead of the media with Norris and Pearce) who reckons he is on his way to Saints. It's been a rumour on the cards for a few months, but has picked up a bit of momentum today. Someone I spoke to a few weeks back suggested that he met up with some of the staff at the trip in Vegas but I found that seriously hard to believe. Would still be a bit mixed about this signing if I'm totally honest, but if you remove the last 3 years (his association with our fishy friends) out of his career and say we're signing him as a PNE player then we'd all be drooling. He was rated as one of the best centre forwards outside the premiership and he's not too old (24/25 i think?) so he could recapture that form with us...
Gorgiesaint Posted 4 July, 2011 Posted 4 July, 2011 I'm pretty sure (99.9%) that Nugent isn't married..... But Nugent's mate obviously is as it was his wedding.... and I don't think you have to be married to be a best man.
Willo Posted 4 July, 2011 Posted 4 July, 2011 He was a good striker until Redkrapp paid shedloads for him and didn't select him. Could be worth a chance with some decent training/coaching with the best facilities. I know it is good that we have excellent training facilities, but i do find it a little strange how many people assume that this is something that will improve a player who has already played in the premiership. If it was down to facilities, why are Brazilian kids so damn good? Don't get me wrong, it is better having good facilities than not having them, but i just don't think it makes much difference to the ability of established professional players.
lee_saint Posted 4 July, 2011 Posted 4 July, 2011 But Nugent's mate obviously is as it was his wedding.... and I don't think you have to be married to be a best man. Re-read what he put.
Gorgiesaint Posted 4 July, 2011 Posted 4 July, 2011 Re-read what he put. Can actually be read both ways - 'Nugent's BM at his wedding' could be short for 'Nugent is BM at his wedding' but re-reading it I see where you're coming from! Anyway, free & on the right wage, could be good signing.
K,Billy's supersound Posted 4 July, 2011 Posted 4 July, 2011 nugent is a player i did say we should consider and was told by posters we stood no chance and didnt want him anyway. i for one hope we sign a good proven championship striker on a free who i think still hit 16 goals last term for a crappy team. the money not spent on someone like maynard could be spent improving and bringning in cover of areas cb and lm/rm
S-Clarke Posted 4 July, 2011 Posted 4 July, 2011 would be a good signing....for a free too... Similar level to Sharp IMO - but 3.2m cheaper, and £3.2m free to spend on a CB and a CM.
aintforever Posted 4 July, 2011 Posted 4 July, 2011 Would be a good signing. If our strike force is just Lambert, Barnard, Guly and Connolly I wouldn't be that confident in getting promoted.
Thedelldays Posted 4 July, 2011 Posted 4 July, 2011 Similar level to Sharp IMO - but 3.2m cheaper, and £3.2m free to spend on a CB and a CM. indeed.....a free signing..would get us at least...AT LEAST 15 league goals...probably 20+....and would pee off the skates too....and cost no fee...this would be great business....better than £4m+ for maynard
wokingsaints Posted 4 July, 2011 Posted 4 July, 2011 once a skate, always a skate. bad signing if it happens
Thedelldays Posted 4 July, 2011 Posted 4 July, 2011 once a skate, always a skate. bad signing if it happens yeah...just like crouch eh....
S-Clarke Posted 4 July, 2011 Posted 4 July, 2011 once a skate, always a skate. bad signing if it happens Bad way of looking at it. Ignore his skate connections, and he's a good player. Alot of fans said exactly the same over Viafara when he signed, but I thought he was great for us. Showed real passion too.
stevegrant Posted 4 July, 2011 Posted 4 July, 2011 If we have an option of signing Maynard for £4m on £15k a week or Nugent for nothing on £15-20k a week, I'd go for Nugent. Basic economics, a sensible business decision. Both are proven at Championship level, and I would be slightly wary of spending a fortune on a player who fairly recently had a cruciate ligament injury.
View From The Top Posted 4 July, 2011 Posted 4 July, 2011 Sooner spend some dosh on Nugent and a wad on a CB.
benjii Posted 4 July, 2011 Posted 4 July, 2011 I was always under the impression Nugent was quite pacey. Has he lost this with all the injuries now? I was about to post something similar: 1) He used to be very quick so unless he has completely lost that then I don't get the "too slow" comments. 2) It makes me laugh when people say players are cocks for getting paid £45k a week to do nothing. I think we all know who the real cock is in that scenario...
