Fergie Posted 4 July, 2011 Posted 4 July, 2011 Craig mackail-smith has joined Brighton on a 4-year deal!? Surely we were in for him I'd expect!? Wonder why he chose them Over us? Poyet over Adkins maybe!!!!
Glasgow_Saint Posted 4 July, 2011 Posted 4 July, 2011 Not as attractive as we think maybe? Danns (Foxes), Stephens (Charlton) CMS (Brighton) Sharp (Donny) and Gobern (Huddersfield) Cork (???)
saint77 Posted 4 July, 2011 Posted 4 July, 2011 perhaps cms hasnt got that much confidence in his own ability to choose hove albion above qpr and west ham
S-Clarke Posted 4 July, 2011 Posted 4 July, 2011 who said we was in for Craig mackail-smith ? Great big assumptions.

Dig Dig Posted 4 July, 2011 Posted 4 July, 2011 Craig mackail-smith has joined Brighton on a 4-year deal!? Surely we were in for him I'd expect!? Wonder why he chose them Over us? Poyet over Adkins maybe!!!! He didn't choose them over us as he haven't bid for him in this wondow. As soon as I saw that he signed for Brighton I knew that some on here would see this as the fault of Saints in some way. The truth is, we had nothing to do with it. I would not have neen unhappy had he joined us but remember, he scored around 12 goals in the Champ when boro got relegated. The same could easily happen with Brighton.
Fergie Posted 4 July, 2011 Author Posted 4 July, 2011 Well I for one would like to think we were interested in him and at least made some enquiry for him. 35 goals last season, think anyone would agree that that's a decent feat! He has pace which we don't up front, and eye for goal obviously, and looks like Robbie Savage...of course we'd have been in for him! Perhaps we are in for bigger and better...only time will tell...Cork is going to sign for Burnley, so we can give up on that one!!

There is absolutely no evidence that he will sign for Burnley, no speculation, no links and as was the situation on Friday - we were the only club with a bid on the table. where did you actually hear that he is going there?
NickG Posted 4 July, 2011 Posted 4 July, 2011 (edited) Is anyone else glad we won't be linked anymore? Thought someone posted signed for great leicester! LOL Edited 4 July, 2011 by NickG
Matthew Le God Posted 4 July, 2011 Posted 4 July, 2011 Surely we were in for him I'd expect!? Wonder why he chose them Over us? Poyet over Adkins maybe!!!! There is a video on Peterborough Player with the chairman going through in detail what went on. He lists a huge number of clubs that bid for CMS and makes no mention of Saints making any bid.

Perhaps we are in for bigger and better...only time will tell...Cork is going to sign for Burnley, so we can give up on that one!! We did enquire.....in January. But the clubs were too far apart in their valuation of him plus boro didn't want to sell. If nothing has changed with regards to the valuation then what's the point of going back in for him? Players will choose other clubs for a whole host of reasons. We'll get one or two of our actual targets but will likely lose out on the majority.....just the same as everyone else.
stevegrant Posted 4 July, 2011 Posted 4 July, 2011 The Peterborough chairman said on Friday that he expected CMS to sign for Leicester over the weekend. Fair to say this has come as a bit of a surprise, and perhaps demonstrates a lack of ambition on the player's part? Guaranteed a starting place at Brighton, whereas would have competition at QPR, West Ham and Leicester. A rumour I heard this morning was that he had agreed to join QPR and then their board pulled the plug on the deal at the last minute. Given the characters involved there, that seems plausible.

That is what the Peterborough owner says in this interview. http://www.theposh.com/articles/20110704/macanthony-on-mackail-smith-departure_2264584_2385990
Dig Dig Posted 4 July, 2011 Posted 4 July, 2011 But he told someone (on here) on Twitter that we did bid? The bid was made in January and was the worst he had ever seen!
stevegrant Posted 4 July, 2011 Posted 4 July, 2011 I wouldn't trust MacAnthony as far as I could throw him, to be honest.
S-Clarke Posted 4 July, 2011 Posted 4 July, 2011 I wouldn't trust MacAnthony as far as I could throw him, to be honest. + 1
angelman Posted 4 July, 2011 Posted 4 July, 2011 maybe he prefers the nightlife in brighton...? You saying he's a batty boy?
SuperSAINT Posted 4 July, 2011 Posted 4 July, 2011 The story I heard (about us and CMS) is that we were interested, but weren't prepared to pay that sort of money for him.
RedAndWhite91 Posted 4 July, 2011 Posted 4 July, 2011 Of the 41 players who scored 10+ Championship goals in 2009-10, Craig Mackail-Smith had the 3rd slowest mins-per-goal rate. FACT. Will be interesting to see how he gets on this time round in the Championship. Adkins/Cortese allegedly did not think he was worth what was being asked and so didn't go for him. Big deal. He is not the be all and end all of Championship life.
Saint Garrett Posted 4 July, 2011 Posted 4 July, 2011 Good player, good signing for Brighton....BUT a lot of money for someone unproven who has one year left on his contract.
shurlock Posted 4 July, 2011 Posted 4 July, 2011 Given the teams linked with him, they pulled off a blinder; lets face it, if we had done something similar (not necessarily CMS), we would be creaming ourselves.
CanadaSaint Posted 4 July, 2011 Posted 4 July, 2011 The story I heard (about us and CMS) is that we were interested, but weren't prepared to pay that sort of money for him. And it seems we're not alone in that viewpoint. That, IMO, is because for that sort of money they expect the player to be capable not just of succeeding in the Championship but also being effective at a higher level.
shurlock Posted 4 July, 2011 Posted 4 July, 2011 Poyet IMO is a good judge of a player. And so is Paul Lambert.
Dig Dig Posted 4 July, 2011 Posted 4 July, 2011 Poyet IMO is a good judge of a player. But are you a good judge of a good manager who is a good judge of a player?
shurlock Posted 4 July, 2011 Posted 4 July, 2011 His haircut wouldn't have fitted in. Blonde hair and blue eyes, though. Good stock.
dune Posted 4 July, 2011 Posted 4 July, 2011 Blonde hair and blue eyes, though. Good stock. Are you suggesting buying him to breed a master race of centre forwards? That certainly would put our academy at the cutting edge of player development.
View From The Top Posted 4 July, 2011 Posted 4 July, 2011 Too much money regardless of who signed him.
david in sweden Posted 4 July, 2011 Posted 4 July, 2011 Craig mackail-smith has joined Brighton on a 4-year deal!? Surely we were in for him I'd expect!? Wonder why he chose them Over us? QUOTE] MAYBE .. he made a wrong decision ! Time will tell.
whizzpop Posted 4 July, 2011 Posted 4 July, 2011 This is probably why Adkins released the statement earlier about "lack of transfer activity" perhaps knew there would be many drama queens reacting to this particular transfer??
Doctoroncall Posted 4 July, 2011 Posted 4 July, 2011 Poyet IMO is a good judge of a player. Indeed, someone that can pick a player to fit into his type of football. CMS may do well for Brighton due to their style, rather than relying on his speed and striking ability alone as he did for Posh.
david in sweden Posted 4 July, 2011 Posted 4 July, 2011 There is a video on Peterborough Player with the chairman going through in detail what went on. He lists a huge number of clubs that bid for CMS and makes no mention of Saints making any bid. ....except I did see a text somewhere when the P'boro chairman said that (before Chrismas) Nicola Cortese made a " ridiculous bid " which he said was so low, that he dare not repeat it ! *** maybe we had already established our valuation of CMS THEN, regardless of his (then) good form. Now D.Ferguson will need to replace CMS and also get a new defence, as 'Boros defensive record was almost as bad as those teams in the relegation zone.
bender Posted 4 July, 2011 Posted 4 July, 2011 The Brighton owner has spent 90mil of his own cash on their new stadium. Who knows what wages they were offering him?
SNSUN Posted 4 July, 2011 Posted 4 July, 2011 Brighton are preparing well for the 2012-13 season back in League One.
shurlock Posted 4 July, 2011 Posted 4 July, 2011 Indeed, someone that can pick a player to fit into his type of football. CMS may do well for Brighton due to their style, rather than relying on his speed and striking ability alone as he did for Posh. Though Brighton and Posh play similar football - i also have no doubt that CMS is the kind of player NA is after - busy, all action players who are clever with their movement and defend from the front.
Miltonaggro Posted 4 July, 2011 Posted 4 July, 2011 Are you suggesting buying him to breed a master race of centre forwards? That certainly would put our academy at the cutting edge of player development. Going forward there could be something in this. Rather like the Boys From Brazil, albeit the Boys from Staplewood. Nige in the Gregory Peck role...
Matthew Le God Posted 4 July, 2011 Posted 4 July, 2011 Brighton and Posh play similar football No they don't. Brighton play possession football, Peterborough are open and expansive.
Fitzhugh Fella Posted 4 July, 2011 Posted 4 July, 2011 This is a bit of a surprise as I actually thought he would go to a bigger club than us. I certainly do not place Brighton in that category. I have got to say I was impressed by him from what I saw last season and would have liked to have signed him but perhaps NA has seen something that has put him off.
Appy Posted 4 July, 2011 Posted 4 July, 2011 The reason CMS chose Brighton is quite clear. He enjoys being managed by pr1cks.
patred44 Posted 4 July, 2011 Posted 4 July, 2011 the only player that Peterborough have that I wish we would sign is BOYD
