dubai_phil Posted 23 October, 2008 Posted 23 October, 2008 Nah we have loads of those over here. All driven by total mongs everyday of the week on Sheikh Zayed Road
Pancake Posted 23 October, 2008 Posted 23 October, 2008 Not really a car thou. A wheeled vehicle that carries its own motor or engine?
St Landrew Posted 23 October, 2008 Posted 23 October, 2008 The assist-rocket bothers me. When Thrust SSC went through its runs there were several times where they had to wind the jet engine down smoothly because circumstances were getting out of control. The rocket motor is either on or off. That's quite a circumstance when 55% of your thrust suddenly stops. Mind you, if anyone can pull this off, Richard Noble can. As far as the thing being a car, it has wheels, is steerable, and doesn't fall over at rest [so not a motobike then], and has it's own engine on board. I wouldn't take it to the shops, but I'm sure I could pick up some shopping in it, if required.
CabbageFace Posted 23 October, 2008 Posted 23 October, 2008 A wheeled vehicle that carries its own motor or engine? Its more of a train than a car. FACTOIDING.
St Landrew Posted 23 October, 2008 Posted 23 October, 2008 Its more of a train than a car. FACTOIDING. Can't steer a train. It's more of a car. Need to get your FACTOIDINGS sorted.

CabbageFace Posted 23 October, 2008 Posted 23 October, 2008 A train is confined in direction of movement by the tracks it runs on... Does this "car" turn corners?
Pancake Posted 23 October, 2008 Posted 23 October, 2008 Does this "car" turn corners? Not the point, it is no restricted by rails.
St Landrew Posted 23 October, 2008 Posted 23 October, 2008 CF. Watch carefully. This is a train. http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=pP-Potb1LmI
CabbageFace Posted 23 October, 2008 Posted 23 October, 2008 Not the point, it is no restricted by rails. A train (diesel etc) could run of the rails if it had suitable wheels and would only go in a straightline, much like this "car"
CabbageFace Posted 23 October, 2008 Posted 23 October, 2008 CF. Watch carefully. This is a train. http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=pP-Potb1LmI I wont watch your propaganda, mongchops.
Evil Monkey Posted 23 October, 2008 Posted 23 October, 2008 So...when I'm driving my car in a straight line, its a train?
St Landrew Posted 23 October, 2008 Posted 23 October, 2008 A train (diesel etc) could run of the rails if it had suitable wheels and would only go in a straightline, much like this "car" But a train has no steering wheel, CF. Don't dig yourself in a bigger hole than you're already in. The car will have a steering wheel or joystick. It will have to, so that it can be driven with stability and control. It's one of the things which define a car. A train locomotive runs on rails to get to its destination because it doesn't steer itself. It's one of the things which define a train locomotive.
CabbageFace Posted 23 October, 2008 Posted 23 October, 2008 So...when I'm driving my car in a straight line, its a train? Yes, well done. Also if you leave the ground its a plane and in the water its a boat. Winner!!! xx
St Landrew Posted 23 October, 2008 Posted 23 October, 2008 (edited) I wont watch your propaganda, mongchops. Charming. Btw, this record breaking train you're on about will have to turn itself around after each run and go back the way it came. All without rails and additional steering from external forces. Or do they just fire it up and it goes really fast in a straight line? Its not a train, but has more in common than it does with a car, where is the Stereo ffs.
St Landrew Posted 23 October, 2008 Posted 23 October, 2008 See if you can watch the first few seconds of Thrust SSC from 1997. Oh look, a steering wheel..! http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=vHnNxMJLfvA

St Landrew Posted 23 October, 2008 Posted 23 October, 2008 Yet more propaganda, is that the train they are using then? OK CF, you get the last word.
CabbageFace Posted 23 October, 2008 Posted 23 October, 2008 OK CF, you get the last word. I have won, its a train. In your face Richard Hammond.
Jillyanne Posted 23 October, 2008 Posted 23 October, 2008 A wheeled vehicle that carries its own motor or engine? When a plane is on the ground, is it a car?

CabbageFace Posted 23 October, 2008 Posted 23 October, 2008 What about when it's turning? 1000mph train.
Pancake Posted 23 October, 2008 Posted 23 October, 2008 What about when it's turning? A taxi. BOOM BOOM!
OLYMPIC Posted 23 October, 2008 Posted 23 October, 2008 A land speed record car has to have 4 wheels or more,Thrust ssc did have a steering wheel although it only provided minimum steering lock at the end of the measured mile it was towed into position for the return run. The lay out of Thrust ssc caused problems as it was rear wheel steered to give room on either side for the 2 engines, but this caused the vehicle to wander about a bit if one engine came up to power slightly befor the other one.

OLYMPIC Posted 23 October, 2008 Posted 23 October, 2008 That was copied from Wiki under "train" Not copied it's just Land speed record cars are one of the few things i know alot about.
Jillyanne Posted 23 October, 2008 Posted 23 October, 2008 Not copied it's just Land speed record cars are one of the few things i know alot about. Are you Donald Campbell's son?
OLYMPIC Posted 23 October, 2008 Posted 23 October, 2008 Are you Donald Campbell's son? No just a bit of a geek when it comes to LSR cars.
Evil Monkey Posted 23 October, 2008 Posted 23 October, 2008 Yes, well done. Also if you leave the ground its a plane and in the water its a boat. Winner!!! xx If I'm parked, is it a washing machine?
Cosham Scientist Posted 23 October, 2008 Posted 23 October, 2008 Was the last proper car to hold the land speed record Reid Railton's Napier Special driven by John Cobb to 360-odd mph in 1939 and 390-odd mph in 1947? That was before I was born even. Piston engines driving road wheels through a conventional transmission. I know people have been a bit faster since then in proper cars but not significantly so. I was pretty impressed by Andy Green driving (aiming?) Thrust SSC; best of luck to all concerned in the Bloodhound SSC project.
bridge too far Posted 23 October, 2008 Posted 23 October, 2008 I think some of the developmental work is being done near me, at Leafield. Am I right, Ponty?
Ponty Posted 23 October, 2008 Posted 23 October, 2008 I think some of the developmental work is being done near me, at Leafield. Am I right, Ponty? Let's hope it doesn't suffer the 'curse of Leafield' like TWR, Arrows, Aguri, etc.
Saint in Paradise Posted 24 October, 2008 Posted 24 October, 2008 What a waste of time and money.

Yes John Cobbs Railton Mobil Special was the last internal combustion engine car to hold the record in September 1947,also the first car to do a 400mph pass. All the cars after that were turbofan or turboshaft powered.
