CB Saint Posted 3 July, 2011 Share Posted 3 July, 2011 So let's get this straight. A business who won't chip in to buy their own product for you is a c***.

gaz Posted 3 July, 2011 Share Posted 3 July, 2011 Please would someone tell me what a penny jar is we don't have something like that here. Fill your car up with £40.02 of fuel, sometimes the counter has a jar/tray that people put their spare change in (like if they filled up to £24.98, 2p change goes in the tray). Not funded by the station but other motorists. I chip in when I can but I'm pretty good at hitting round numbers.
Saint in Paradise Posted 3 July, 2011 Share Posted 3 July, 2011 Ah thanks, over here the vast majority pay by card so the exact amount is taken from your Bank. However if you do pay by cash most of those pay by setting the pump to an exact dollars worth. Garages and supermarkets etc now either round up or round down very small amounts as we only have ten cent coins as the lowest denomination. If something is 10 dollars and 4 cents you pay 10 dollars, if 10 dollars and 6 cents you pay 10 dollars and 10 cents hence why most of us tight sods pay by card as it is very common for stuff to be say 10 dollars and 98 cents per item. Whitey Grandad Posted 3 July, 2011 Share Posted 3 July, 2011 The real scum are those who steal the charity boxes. The other annoyance is when you try to put money in the box and it is crammed full.

Other people shouldn't be allowed to give a lot of money to charity, just in case I ever want to get rid of a couple of annoying 1p's from my pocket! saint francis Posted 4 July, 2011 Share Posted 4 July, 2011 We had one of those jars at my local filling station, but the system got abused and had to be stopped. One bloke, we'll call him Dave, used to consistently fill up to £20.02 and take a 2p out of the jar each time. He was a regular visitor and on more than one occasion the jar was left completely empty. Whenever I saw him in the village, he was always sat in his car and always had a big grin on his face. It was estimated Dave made £2.36 over the five years that jar was in situ.

hamster Posted 7 July, 2011 Share Posted 7 July, 2011 Out here on the canal they have a great system, operated on behalf I'd the taxman by an honesty system. Fuel for propulsion is taxable whereas fuel for heating and generating electricity is exempt. People who live aboard would generally declare somewhere between a 20/80 or 10/90 % split. As holdaymaker might be cruising constantly hence they are more likely to declare a much higher propulsion ratio. Many are unaware of the system and will pay full whack as per a normal petrol station, the weirdos. Obviously, I only covered a few miles, negligible in propulsion terms. I will probably round it up to 5% just to do my bit for the economy. Cash is king, I keep saying this and it is truer today than it ever has been.
