Legends and live shows

Last week my mate dragged me along to see the legend that is Ringo Starr. Although a big Beatles fan, I was slightly apprehensive about what sort of show it would be. After all he never had the best voice, was now 72, and hadn't had a hit for 40 years. Having seen Paul McCartney before I just went along basically because of who he was, and to share a few drinks with an old mate.

However, he gave a fantastic show. He had a great band with him, including Edgar Winter & Rick Derringer and some guy from Mr Mister. After a few jars we were up singing along to "songs from that other group I was in", as well as his early solo stuff. He must be the only bloke alive who can get away with a Yellow Submarine sing song at a rock and roll concert.

I came away not only having seen a living legend, but having seen a bloody good show (which at £60 was hardly a cheap night out)

Has anyone else been to see a "name" and been surprised how good they were,or even someone you've been looking forward to seeing, but ended up dissapointed. In these days of tribute bands, is it better to see the real thing, or not bother and leave them in your memory bank.

Saw Meatloaf at Romsey a couple of years ago.....truly aweful

Have seen a few over here..

Blondie - once her voice had warmed up it was pretty good.

Clapton - amazing

Tom Jones - far better than I thought he would be

Neil Diamond - another one far better than I thought he would be

Stevie Nicks - maybe we just had bad seats but it's still the only concert I have ever walked out of

Elton John - seen a few times but last couple were disapointing

Rod Stewart - sounded Ok, but kept looking at his watch as if it was past his bedtime!

Billy Joel - excellent and also a very funny guy

Cher - still not sure whether she mimed or not - the sound was just too perfect so I have my suspicions, but she also spend more time changing costumes than she did actually singing.

The trouble over here is the tickets are so expensive. Going to see Roger Waters next year - bought cheapest tickets which were well over a hundred quid each!

I saw Neil Diamond on a BBC 4 prgramme and was surprised how humble a bloke he appeared to be . I had heard that Billy Joel gave a good show.

The best I've seen were Paul Simon, Paul McCartney and Johnny Cash, but Ringo was up there in terms of having a good night out. The worst was chuck Berry, did half an hour then ****ed off with no encore.

I think Ringo would go down well at Festivals.

A little help from my friends, indeed. In 10 versions of his all star band, he's has some seriously great musicans. His first band was

Joe Walsh

Nils Lofgren

Dr. John

Billy Preston

Rick Danko

Levon Helm

Jim Keltner

Clarence Clemons

Would have given my right arm to see that line up.

The Who at Rose Bowl a few years back were OK, wasnt blown away like i hoped i might

All I hear about and read about from friends and on other forums (this included, as above) is how amazing Mr Grohl and his band are. My mission is to see them ASAP, hopefully next year or whenever they do a big tour again - not keen on festivals but if its whats gotta be done then sobeit

I was at that gig, and I think it depends on where you were stood as to how well received it was, I was central to the stage, about 10 yards back & thought it was ok (not great, but ok). Friends of ours were about 2/3rd of the way back & share your view.

I saw Black Sabbath in 2001.

Ozzy, as expected, bumbled around like a slightly confused but energetic old man and couldn't sing for **** (but then he never could). The band were great though.

I saw the reunion gig in 97 (?) at the NEC, twas awesome!

Saw DOWN the other week. The 20-25 seconds they played of Panteras "walk" was arguably the loudest and most well received thing of the whole Download weekend.

Honourable mentions to Alice Cooper, Twisted Sister and Rob Zombie too.

Big 4 on Friday, so I hope they live up to the legendary hype

Saw Sabbath loads of times in the 70's and wouldn't want to spoil those memories by seeing them now.

Hawkwind were great, saw them at the Gaumont (Mayflower) and the old Top Rank.

One of the best artists I saw was a guy called Kevin Coyne, true genius.

Saw Brian Wilson twice at Royal Festival Hall. First time doing Pet Sounds, second time Smile. Both gigs had mind blowing moments, the Pet Sounds one was particularly incredible.

Also saw the Funk Brothers (the original Mowtown session musicians) at the same venue whiich was probably the most fun concert I have been to. Sadly I missed the Sex Pistols play at the Phoenix Festival because, well because I was too hammered somewhere else to bother going. Same with Radiohead in what was apparently one of their best ever gigs at Glastonbury in 97, but that was more due to the mud.

Seen a few other Legends at festivals. Jimmy Cliff, Lee Scratch Perry, George Clinton & Parliament/Funkadelic and Chuck Berry (I did quite enjoy singing "Pompey Fan On A String" under my breath to "My Ding A Ling"). Oh and Chas & Dave, and John Peel djing.
