egg Posted 1 July, 2011 Share Posted 1 July, 2011 Why is what I merely allowed for as a sensible business possibility a conspiracy? Your post reads that we pulled out of the signing as we did not have the money because we had not sold oxo. That implies that we cannot buy unless we sell. skintsaint Posted 1 July, 2011 Share Posted 1 July, 2011 Riise is the sort of signing we need to get us out of this league. We dont need young inexperianced players - players with champions league, prem league and serie a experiance is the way to go. Spend any sort of money to get us promoted. Gordon Mockles Posted 1 July, 2011 Share Posted 1 July, 2011 He also said have more faith in the current squad, we will only bring new faces in if they are better than what we already have. That comment concerns me. Comments like that and the long delay in moving in for players which I previously left lee way to the club for (this patience will expire next week if no new announcements take place) brings up questions. It contradicts the rumours we've bid for Sharp and Cork but can these be substantiated? That "improving the squad" (old) line peddled out last season and was acceptable then but not now. I hope it was merely a throw away comment. We clearly DO need new faces if we're to compete with only the spine of the team (Lambert, Fonte, Lallana, Oxo & Harding) of the quality to progress, the rest our squad players. Certainly nowhere near a PL side, miles off. If we were to do a Norwich which is what I was lead to believe Cortese and Adkins wanted to do, then we need to bring in a much stronger calibre of player like Sharp, Cork, Pilkington and players of that Ilk. Young, untested (or unlucky) players with potential (i.e. Seaborne, Dale Stephens, Martin, etc.) is a decent transfer policy regarding addition to the squad (& when we pick up injuries over our arduous season) and we just "may" develop another Oxo but they shouldn't be first choice, starting 11 players. I hope we do sign some quality as making do was a sign of the old times and I hoped we were pushing for promotion or at least a top 10 finish this season. The current squad were ok for League One but West Ham, Leicester, Hull, Notts Forest, Birmingham...even the Skates, won't be easy games and we really need to bolster our squad (like we didn't do under Strachan when we were on the platform to success and just "made do"). Let's hope Cortese does have ambition and the financial support to realise that. The new Lambert contract and particularly the holding onto youth actions (with Lallana and possibly Oxo) show a huge shift in management and club attitude. The reassuring comments about the sense in developing the squad and holding onto young talent when we can (can't keep Oxo if he wants to leave) is great and welcomed but I truly hope we have the sense to push on as a whole....either that or my biggest concern from day one (and I may just be worrying like Alpine for the sake of it but I like to think I'm more realistic rather than pessimistic) was how good is Adkins and the club at actually attracting the players. Pardew could. Can Adkins, forget the fan talk that money & facilities brings in any player, it doesn't. It just helps. Some players have higher morals and integrity (not many! LOL) rather than a mercenary hunger for the big bucks (but who can blame them!) Let's hope a decent signing comes in soon...today? Cork would reassure me greatly. That would be superb as our midfield is my biggest concern. It wins and loses matches and our central players/play are constantly the biggest weakness in our weaker games. I hope we can bring in a replacement for Hammond and a reliable starter for the times Morgan goes absent. That and the back up striker and some injection of pace. Just 2 or 3 shrewd signings could galvanise our squad. Gwannnn!!!!!

Professor Posted 1 July, 2011 Share Posted 1 July, 2011 I have just spoken to NC this morning outside the ticket office about 7:40 and he confirmed there will be money to spend if required!!! He also said have more faith in the current squad, we will only bring new faces in if they are better than what we already have. This sounds like the neutral sort of comment that any chairman would make when acosted in public but if Cortese is serious in taking the club into the Prem then we do need quite a few players that are better than what we already have. Its all very well to have faith in this squad to hold its own in the Championship but it takes a long stretch of the imagination to see the current first team, with no additions, being in the top 6. If there have been bids for players as reported, than surely both NC, despite his comment, and NA think the present squad needs strengthening. Gordon Mockles Posted 1 July, 2011 Share Posted 1 July, 2011 This forum is now overrun by spoilt brats. Or, fence sitting fans with low ambition & low standards. Maybe even Lowe standards! Perhaps ineptitude, complacency & just a tragic lack of ambition, (& a board that were not football fans) & that inherent "let's just stay up & survive" has permeated to many fans. I don't know about you but my memory is still decent. I remember the youth team, relegation & how the past boards decimated our club. The difference between you & I, I have that burning hunger of ambition for us to rekindle our PL strength & go one better & watch the club (along with my son) win top level trophies...or at least seriously compete. All that & within a short a time frame as possible. I bought into Nicola & Markus' vision because I shared it already. Shame some of you have a proclivity for mediocrity. Agreed, some fans are unrealistic but I think the average, coherent Saints fan would agree that we definitely need key additions to improve our team. We were in the third tier & I wouldn't class our squad as a top Championship line up. Decent, but with the frailties addressed (we all know which positions : CM, CB, CF poss RW) & some much needed pace, 6 - 8 million quid could release millions if promotion was achieved. Look at the bigger picture.
Windmill Arm 2 Posted 1 July, 2011 Share Posted 1 July, 2011 I would have agreed before, but he's not a man who'd bid £3.25m for a player BEFORE selling Chamberlain, if we had no money. Before the deal was announced, anything could happen, he could get injured badly, they could pull out, and our finances would be stuffed. We offered £3.25m because it was available. I think any Chamberlain deals are completely separate. At last, it took a while but finally a sensible poster. Agree 100%
shurlock Posted 1 July, 2011 Share Posted 1 July, 2011 Then wind up in the top flight with a bunch of merceneries no longer good enough for top flight, but hanging around one big money while you get relegated. It wasn't the way Norwich or QPR got promoted, it's not the way many teams have got promoted, especially those who've lasted. I have no desire to go down the Pompey route. Disagree - class is class. Obviously, you need to watch for attitudes; but Adkins strikes me as a good reader of people. Which Pompey route? I guess you don't mean the one that got them promoted in the first place and involved drafting in the likes of Merson, Stone, Sherwood, Berger, ageing but model pros who could no longer make it in the prem but were still a cut above in the championship. Tamesaint Posted 2 July, 2011 Share Posted 2 July, 2011 The thing is that I am sure that he need not have said anything about finances. The fact is that he did. I am sure that we are in a better financial state than most other Championship clubs. Thank God we are not like Pompey. The only thing that can be said with certainty about their finances is that it is dirty money which their owners need to be laundered,
Saint Fan CaM Posted 3 July, 2011 Share Posted 3 July, 2011 No offense but Riise despite his past exploits would command huge wages and is getting much older, whilst Cork is improving and can play in the Premiership as he showed for Burnley and would be a leading midfielder in the championship. And would stay around much longer than a Riise who would just be a bit of an old mercanary, living on past Liverpool exploits. What would Riise actually bring to the team that we don't have already? Surely what we need is another CM, a new CB to replace the aging Jaidi to partner Fonte and a pacy striker to compliment the likes of Lambert and Barnard. We're so far going for two of those options with Maynard/Sharp bids plus the Cork bid being accepted. I'm very happy with what we're doing in this window. Have I missed someting? Adkins recently said on 'Saintsplayer' that no approach has been made for Riise - has something happened to change that position in the last day or so? St_Tel49 Posted 6 July, 2011 Share Posted 6 July, 2011 again, negative or realistic? Would Cortese stand there and say "no we are skint and have no money"? I didn't say we dont have money.
