Dibden Purlieu Saint Posted 29 June, 2011 Share Posted 29 June, 2011 A few weeks ago we were installing a new roof onto our shed, and when removing the old felt, we noticed a spider. It was around an inch long, black shiny body and pointy legs. It had some white markings on its back. My Dad, who spent some time growing up in Australia thought it was a black widow. Now, we decided to kill it, we didn't want to risk it, and also destroyed a white egg sack next to it (around the same size as the spiders body). Now, I have heard that there are these 'False Widow's' around, but I will now refuse to go near my shed to look for others (luckily it is a second shed and I don't tend to need to go in there). What can I do? Is this something that I should make the council aware of? Anyone got any expertise on this area?

Colinjb Posted 29 June, 2011 Share Posted 29 June, 2011 'False' widows. What is so false about them? That they look like Black Widows but are not poisonous or that they look slightly different but can still kill you?
Give it to Ron Posted 29 June, 2011 Share Posted 29 June, 2011 A false widow...you mean the lying cow's old man is still alive?

the stain Posted 29 June, 2011 Share Posted 29 June, 2011 Squashed it with a spade. Then that will be how they'll get you when the spiders take over.
Fowllyd Posted 29 June, 2011 Share Posted 29 June, 2011 A Black Widow spider has a red egg-timer shape on its back - it looks like this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Black_Widow_11-06.jpg Couldn't get that to post as an image for some reason. I suspect you've killed a perfectly harmless arachnid...
Redbul Posted 29 June, 2011 Share Posted 29 June, 2011 We've got false widows in our garden and living in our shed. They look mean but they're harmless. Must admit, we did 5h1t ourselves the first time we saw one!!!
saintjay77 Posted 29 June, 2011 Share Posted 29 June, 2011 There are a few places in the uk that have got them. From the same family as the black widow but no-where near as dangerous. Same colours and hour glass shape thing. Can't remember what the difference is to compare them but was talking to someone at work about them the other day. I work at a zoo and they are in a few spots at the bottom of the zoo but have never made it to the top of the zoo. So dont think they spread very fast. The normal house spider you find running about in your kitchen has got more bite though.
