My brother, his son and I are thinking of moving from our seats in the Northam to the Chapel, to save money on our season tickets, but we like standing to watch the game- does anyone know if there is anywhere in the Chapel end where anyone stands or do you have to sit down for the whole game?!

The Chapels full of kids standing up blocks their view even if they are behind you at 3ft nothing having a straping big 6ft adult stood in front of them kind of spoils it for them. Chapel is for families and old farts, Northam is for the "I'm hard so I stand up" types.

Standing is against ground regulations. Hopefully if you repeatedly stand up and cause annoyance to those sitting behind you then you will have your s/t removed.

It'll be interesting to see what happens in the Chapel this season, as the club have positioned it as the Family Stand, but also made renewals cheaper there than anywhere else in the ground, including the Northam.

 

So given the correlation between low incomes and lawlessness, there could be a few ex-Northamers who are strapped for cash, or who have got kids they can get in for free in the Chapel but would have to pay for in the Northam, who move to the Chapel and expect the same rules you can get away with in the Northam to apply there.

You really have no idea.

 

It may not be the free for all that you get in the Northam, but we do genuinely love our football and do get animated when the action demands it. If sitting down doesn't feel right to you, no problem.... but standing while you are with young children doesn't feel right to many of us who sit there either.

 

I can understand the reasons why a move to the Chapel would appeal but it would surely only be financial. The best area for noise and atmosphere will remain in the Northam, right next to the away end and clustered into one place, just as it should be.

I sat in the Chapel a couple of times last year and quite enjoyed it, being able to spread out and was laid back, but the atmosphere was dreadful, i don't just refer to singing but even the slightist shout of encouragement stood out amongst the silence, i would encourage anyone who does go in there to be more vocal and it might rub off on the rest

I'm not bothered either way, but my 11 year old likes to sit so we go to the Chapel. The Club turn a blind eye to standing in the Notham, but if it spreads to ther areas of the ground, they will end up having to enforce the regulations even in the Notham. You want to stand up, then pay to watch in the "unoffical standing area". You want to save money on your ticket, then sit down like everyone else.

As I spend my entire working day on my feet I've come to the view that standing is a privileged much overrated. As for the important question of Chapel fans and any problems with excessive flatulence, experience shows that most of us have all mastered the art of the 'silent waft'.

The chapel is the nominated family stand, so please remain seated unless celebrating a goal and refrain from swearing. Surely not too much to ask?

 

I can swear with the best of you, but have made a decision to try as much as I can to shelter my 8yr old from it as much as I can as I believe that at his age he has other more important words to learn.

 

We are always singing in the chapel and away games.

Fair point, but the way it often appears to be (for the Northam at least), the atmosphere dies the moment the stewards start enforcing the 'all seater' rule.

 

Sometimes the ambience of the fans isn't affected by a poor performance on the pitch - after we went 2 down against MK Dons for example; the crowd picked up and so did the players. Likewise negativity and staying quiet can have adverse effects when heads are down on the pitch.

Well said GITR! Undoubtedly the Chapel is quieter than the Northam, it doesn't mean that we are all sat down with our flasks and blankets. In fact there are some rather excitable 'old fellas' down here who, along with their sons/daughters, do stand up and have a good old shout on many an ocassion.

 

It just doesn't help our hearts and lungs to do it continuously

I have spent about 15 years being bemused by this. Think it boils down to us not really being great singers as a bunch of fans. We can be very fervent and passionate when the mood takes us, but apart from the few hundred of us who will pretty much sing all game, a lot of our fans just don't seem to want to sing. Which of course is their right and they've paid their money etc...

Fans are free (within reason) to do and behave however they want at matches, they pay their money they can do what they want. However, it stirkes many fans as strange that some go to a fair bit of effort to travel to games only to show minimal amounts of excitement or passion for actually supporting their team, sitting there glum faced and emotionless, like they've only gone along because they absolutely have to. What got me hooked to going to football as a kid was the noise and atmosphere, loud support, its one of the things that makes football different to rugby or cricket etc. Doesn't mean you have to join in with every song (I think the Lallana one is stupid as well and give it a wide berth), doesn't mean you can't make an effort at getting vocally behind the team.
