Unrealistic Expectations

Lets get this out the way now, before we start arguing midway through the season.

We are very unlikely to get promoted.

We are unlikely to get Playoffs.

With the strength of the division next year, mid table will be a success.

Just hope you all understand this before people start bleating on that we should be beating everyone.

So you have come to this conclusion on the 27th June, before Saints have even slightly shown their hand for summer transfer activity.

I think I'll wait to see what the squad looks like before gauging what would or wouldn't be a successful season.

So the difference between a very good season and a poor season is 6 positions then?

I'd be disappointed with a 13/14th placed finish. (i meant to say anything below 13th above)

I want to see us compete with the play off teams and I believe we will, even with this current group of players we've got more than enough to give it a decent shot IMO.

Promotion, probably not, but competing at the top end of mid-table is what I'd be looking for.

I'm with Gemmel, let's wait and see what we've got to work with before we go pinning our colours to the mast.

Who knows, this time next week we might have 4 marquee signings and another Kevin Kegan in the building....!!

I can but dream. ;)

I really dont know what people are expecting both in terms of signings and league finish. Surely this season should be considered a season for stability, establish ourselves in this division with a respectable finish of midtable and building a side for a push for play offs/automatic at a push the season after. Anything more is a massive bonus, anything less is a bit of a faliure. Anyone expecting more than that is in for serious disapointment.

Agreed. The club will not outwardly aim for mid-table, they will come out and say they are aiming for top spot. But there's a very good reason we have a 5 year plan; the club expects it to take that long to get back to the Premier League. Which suggests they won't be bank-rolling us as we've previously seen with the likes of QPR etc.

I think we have a good core of the side, and currently a squad that would comfortably consolidate itself in the division even if we made no more signings. I just wonder how far up that table we could get with 3 or 4 quality signings.

I'm quite happy to just watch and see how it turns out really.

Top half finish would be nice.

Stop being sensible, that won't go down well with a lot of folk on here. ;)

BTW that's the way I'm looking at the season ahead, too.

Ditto. Should we start a club, a facebook group, or something like that? :)

I would like to invite you two gentlemen for tea and cucumber sandwiches. Or a scone if you prefer.

if you sit on that fence much longer you'll have a big splinter in your a**e !!!!!!!!!!

As for you, you shan't receive an invitation. Oh go on then. But no clotted cream or strawberry jam for you.

Sitting on the fence implies I can't choose between two things. I've made a choice. Top half as opposed to bottom half. I can't remember a league as strong as this so I just want to enjoy it for what it is, it's a massive bonus not to be playing the likes of Rochdale and Wycombe again.

I would like it if at one stage during the season we make a challenge for the play-offs, because at some point or another, a load of teams do that. Last season Leeds, the Skates, Derby, Hull, Millwall, Watford and Burnley all had a go at it. It'll be similar this year.

Everyone seems to agree just how unpredictable this league is.

So why does everyone then go ahead and try to predict everything?

Just be happy we're back and ENJOY it! We'll be 1st-24th. HTH

Yeah. God forbid people should use an online forum to, you know, talk about stuff.

What's interesting is that lots of us seem to think expectations are too high.

But when you ask people what their expectations actually are, all those not taking the p i s s seem to agree that somewhere around 8th-14th would be prefectly ok.

Great thread. Started seriously, a few views, opinions, thoughts and ideas, and then degenerated into **** taking and abuse. Great, that's what I signed up for ;-)) No Dalek slagging , though, so slipping a bit.

Sandwiches were a nice touch.

And just to be boring - we will finish 9th with the current squad, 15th without Oxo and third with some decent signings.

- We are owned by billionaires.

- I expect us to spend big.

- I expect us to go up.

We were owned by a billionaire and are now (probably) owned by his beneficiaries.

This close season's spending will show whether Cortese still has the ability to write cheques as he did.

If he can, and does, I think the play offs are realistic.

If we keep what we have i think we're midtable.

Have to wait to see what our squad looks like just before kick off to have any form of expectation.

Looks like West Ham and Leicester are spending big so they have to be considered favs. Forest,Leeds and Cardiff will also be strong. Right now i would put us in the next bracket of teams i.e Birmingham,Millwall,Reading and us.

If we add some decent players then we could go from the third bracket into the second. I think we need to spend a lot to get into the first so that won't happen.

If we start the season with our current squad, keeping hold of all the players then i would be pretty happy to be honest.

I can't think of a more knobish way to start a thread than this. Basically you are saying that you way of thinking is the only way, based on no evidence whatsoever and that everybody should step in line. I bet there was some nomark, health and safety bod, part time ref, small cocked poster on a Norwich forum this time last year posting the same crap.

Why people like you have to force your way of supporting on others, let people do their own thing and put up with the difference of opinion ffs its a forum.

i give it 5 games before people start with the adkins out threads

As we don't know what the results of the first 5 games are going to be this is a rather silly post. If we win the first 5 games would there be a single fan who would want to change the manager? On the other hand, if we were to lose the first 5, even the most loyal supporters would be having doubts. Since both of those scenarios are unlikley, we shall have to wait and see just how we have done after 5 games and then the arguments can take place based on facts, not speculation.

What we do know at the moment is that Adkins has said he wants to strengthen the squad with two or three players of extra quality and Cortese has set out his vision. Whether we were interested in the players that we've been linked with by rumour, who knows, but several of those do appear to be going elsewhere. To get a quality player to choose your club its not only the wages on offer that matter, as pay by other clubs may be in the same ball park, but you have to convince players that yours will be a winning team. Sven, Maclaren, Allardyce, etc, may have an advantage in profile and expectation that Saints don't have at the moment, which could make some players more expensive than they are worth to get them to choose Southampton. But if we make one quality signing, the second one might be easier.

Despite Adkin's achievement last season, he doesn't yet have the profile that Alan Pardew had as a former Prem manager so unlike some of these other managers, Adkins is not an automatic draw for players who are in the market. That is not a reason to sack him, that would be ridiculous, but it does mean that more effort is needed, and probably more money, to get the players in that Adkins himself has said he needs.

I'd say:

Automatic is quite unlikely

Playoffs are possible

Midtable is most likely

below that (but above relegation) is a relative failure

Relegation is a massive failure

I'd agree with that word for word. Even without adding anyone the squad is nearer top half than bottom.

We are hardly likely to get to the PL with the current squad so I was expecting us to sign a few players capable of getting us there

That said we do seem to have a lot of players but I doubt we will get rid of them and replace them with better.

I dont really know if

Barnard Hammond Dickson Harding Jaidi Seaborne Martin Butterfield Connolly and Richardson will be quality Championship players I know some have played there before but they will be good enough to keep SFC in a reasonable position in the League.

So I expect that they will gradually be replaced over the next two/three seasons when we should have a team capable of pressing for promotion

So I expect gradually over the next

Correct, the number of times people take the bait you offer up is fantastic. You must be a good fisherman. I would be happy with mid table. Hoping to see a signing or two by the end of this week. If we can beat the likes of pompey and derby away then its going to make for some happy times, wherever we finish.

reckon if we are not winning after ten minutes Lard will be saying Adkins has been found out in championship!

Once again your views on me are extremely polarised, pretty much like your views on Adkins...like others you have no middle ground, but i enjoy the banter.

This will be the most interesting feature this season,Can Adkins cut it in this league.

No comparison to when he was here with Scunny. And no comparison to last season. Many nailed their colours to the mast,'he is the best up and coming manager' 'we are lucky to have him.i prefer to sit on the side of 'air of caution' as i have done from the off, this season is the true test,a little out of his comfort zone?

This will determine if he is a longterm appointment,or was just someone to get us out of league one.....which is more than possible. Here's hoping i'm wrong,i would truly like to see him finish what he has started....but atleast i have reserved judgement......unlike some. For those that are so certain, from the off, that he is beyond the realms of critisim i hope you are proved correct.

To early to predict what the new season will bring, will be a little easier to make a judgement when/if we make signings.

Will be interesting to see the calibre of player we recruit. Will tell us alot abouth the state and mindset of SFC as a whole.

I just hope NC is working his magic somewhere. I really can't see the current squad achieving anything other than survival in the NPC. It's probably one of the strongest leagues at this level in years in terms of heavy weight clubs that we will be coming up against - most of which are making big noises in terms of prospective signings.

That list of PL released players of a few weeks back surely has to be the level at which we should be looking to sign if we are to stand any chance of mid table mediocrity which in itself wouldn't be a bad thing, for a season, I'd just like to see a bit more enthusiasm to push on than the names being linked so far.

Two or three marquee signings that gets us noticed would be great. Personalities on and off the pitch which generates a buzz about the place like in LM's days. I'm sure there must be experience out there that aren't just about taking the money and who really want to be remembered for helping take us back to the big time in the twilight of their careers. Mix that with a couple of eager youths coming in and we could well replicate Norwich's success of last season.

It's happened before, it can happen again.

Based on how NC works that could be a good shout, reckon he will go for Neil Warnock once QPR sack him.

Experience on getting out of the Championship

"how NC works" - you don't have a ****ing clue do you? What are you referring to? Giving Adkins a massive contract extension?

Personally think top half finish will be a good season. From a personal point of view I have no interest in saints getting back to the PL (I couldn't afford to watch them on a regular basis if the price hikes this season were anything to go by). So I'd be happy with saints being a good championship team and beating poopey twice a season. Given this I'm suprisingly relaxed about next season I think were good enough for mid table as we are.
