From the sublime to the ridiculous. What's yours?

Sublime - Jon Dahl Tomasson back in 2002 or so.

Ridiculous - Carsten Jancker. We even got it on the BBC's January transfer window special. Although there was that wind up merchant (Was his name Tommac? I can't remember) who suggested his interested takeover group wanted to get Henrik Larsson down here. Oh and there was Jan Koller once or twice.

The most ludicrous "evidence" of a transfer (speculation) was:

Summer of 2003 - after our Cup Final appearance,UEFA Cup beckoning, when everyone chuntered on about "taking us to the next level" and players to do that. On a Sunday evening someone posted on Saints Forever that they had seen Rupert Lowe driving along the Aston Expressway in Brum in the last hour. Therefore he must of been there to sign Darius Vassell. Cue 5 pages of posts....

Damarcus Beasley was another one that never came off about 2002/2003

Yep, remember that one well.

Then there was all the crap we were linked with under Redknapp. Vincent Candela, Abel Xavier, Mido (who later accused us of being racist).

Can't remember what year, we were still at the Dell, fans were planning a protest against Rupert Lowe for lack of spending, que red top headlines suggesting we were going to sign Paul Merson for 5 Million

George Weah's cousin. . .

The Henrik Larsson one was tommac on a wind up. He was some Derby fan on a very prolonged and admittedly clever windup that half the forum got taken in by.

I also believe Lowe turned down the opportunity to sign a young Emmanuel Adebayor

The Bierhoff one was comedy, a supposed marquee signing with which to open the new stadium at St. Mary's.

Until he told Lowe his wage demands.

So the marquee signings ended up being Delap and Anders Svensson.

So the marquee turned into a 2 man tent?

Do we mean transfer rumours that have made into the papers, or rumours circulated mostly on this forum?

The most entertaining have to be in the last two years. Michael Owen and Freddy Adu being my personal favourites.

Also Martin O'Neill as manager when we were in L1 deserves a special mention.

Love it.

Saints 'line up Bierhoff'

Germany striker Oliver Bierhoff could be set for a shock move to Southampton.

The AC Milan star is said to be having talks with the Premiership side, according to Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport.

The newspaper said Bierhoff met a Southampton representative on Thursday evening.

The 33-year-old 's chances at Milan look limited since the arrival of strikers Filippo Inzaghi and Javi Moreno.

Future plans

He has not been included in the Milan squad which will face Turkey's Besiktas in a friendly in Istanbul on Saturday.

After an active summer in the transfer market Milan are looking to part with some of the players who do not feature in Turkish coach Fatih Terim's plans.

Bierhoff has also recently been linked with French first division Olympique Marseille.

Bruno Metsu as manager :(

If only. .

Apparently he applied but lost out to Strachan.

He's since converted to Islam and is choosing to spend his life in the Middle East. He's going round coaching all the national/top domestic sides in Qatar/UAE and surrounding area, so the chances of him ever managing here are zero.

He took Qatar to the quarter final of this year's Asian Cup and they could easily have beaten the eventual winners Japan in the quarter final.

A fee years ago the LSE announced we'd made the biggest signing in the history of football. £136m to build an oil rig off the coast of China. NOTHING will ever top that, and it wasn't even a rumour, it was 'officially announced' the OS even had to run a story denying it. Was the summer the Dutch duo joined i think.

It has to be Javier de Pedro. All that time of us linked with a left winger who could complete the final piece of the puzzle after the cup final. Something to give us that attacking impact from the left after Bridgey departed. Forum member Javi swore he would be joining, we all drooled in anticipation at getting a player who was a full Spanish international and nearly won La Liga with Real Sociedad just a year or two before....

....And we ended up with Neil McCann....

....And when he joined Blackburn a year or so later he proved to be not very good anyway.

Halcyon Days.
