The9 Posted 26 June, 2011 Posted 26 June, 2011 Heh, nice edit. I suspect that he had his hopes pinned on signing Wayne Thomas long before he actually did, which was indeed "too late". Actually, I'm surprised we were still signing anyone at that point, with hindsight.
sadoldgit Posted 26 June, 2011 Posted 26 June, 2011 Of course the team was weakened by the loss of Bale, Jones etc. That season midtable was more realistic, but it was blindingly obvious through the previous season and the summer we need a big strong centre half. The money was there because we spent £1m on Saganowski and Safri, and then later £1m on Andrew Davies and £14k a week contract to Euell, et Burley failed to address it, something Pearson did immediately by signing Lucketti and Chris Perry, same budget.... And Pearson came with a whisker of taking us down. When Burley left we were closer the the play offs than relegation.

JackFrost Posted 26 June, 2011 Posted 26 June, 2011 (edited) And Pearson came with a whisker of taking us down. When Burley left we were closer the the play offs than relegation. And you don't think that might have something to do with a load of our best players/high earners being out on loan during Pearson's time here, and we had a significantly poorer squad who after the disastrous Dodd & Gorman regime most of who didn't want to be here? Well, we don't actually know that, chairmen have a habit of making funds available when it looks like the alternative is going to cost even more - but that's speculation either way - but neither of those were available to bring in when Burley was in charge.
The9 Posted 26 June, 2011 Posted 26 June, 2011 And Pearson came with a whisker of taking us down. When Burley left we were closer the the play offs than relegation. I don't think that's a reasonable comparison to be fair. Who knows what Pearson could have done with the "£7m" (actually nearer £5m btw, Rasiak was already signed as a loan to buy under Lowe the previous Christmas) that Burley had - and Burley had left us safely clear of the bottom 3 when he took the Scotland job, for all his weird substitutions by then.
JackFrost Posted 26 June, 2011 Posted 26 June, 2011 How Burley is seen as a poorer manager than Branfoot is beyond a joke - and Redknapp for that matter. I can't understand for one minute why certain posters on here seem to actually believe that Burley deserves more flak that the other two. Personally I can't see anyone who has said that and I can't be bothered to look, however I do agree with you that Burley wasn't as bad as Branfoot but he was no better than Redknapp. Burley did a poor job with one of if not the best squad in the league. We had players like Stern John, saganowski, Rasiak and Skacel which were all out on loan when Pearson was here, which is one reason why your comparisons with Burley/Pearson comparisons are highly flawed. Redknapp just didn't want to be here and couldn't be bothered whilst Branfoot (in a different era) was bloody awful

And you can say Burely did a poor job but the fact reamins that at the point he left he was the best performing manager in terms of points per games that we had had.
Turkish Posted 26 June, 2011 Posted 26 June, 2011 Well, we don't actually know that, chairmen have a habit of making funds available when it looks like the alternative is going to cost even more - but that's speculation either way - but neither of those were available to bring in when Burley was in charge. How do you know? How do you know there wasn't better? I dont either for a fact of course, but do you seriously believe there wasn't a good championship level centre half available on a free or low transfer fee who would want sub £10k a week? I'm not talking about a world beater, just a decent pro. Of course we brought in Christian Daily in late September when Burley had sobered up enough to realise what most fans knew, that Makin was not a centre half and Bennett belonged at Wycombe where he ended up.

When Burley left we were closer the the play offs than relegation. i dont buy the Pearson was the new Ferguson which some on here do, but he inherited an awful team who were in a massive decline at a club in termoil off the pitch. I dont believe he was the miracle worker some do but under the circumstances i think he did a decent job and he certainly addressed the flaws in the team at centre half, we were much more difficult to beat under him.

I can't understand for one minute why certain posters on here seem to actually believe that Burley deserves more flak that the other two. The point of the thread is that he came here with a great reputation and ultimately failed dismally. Branfoot came with no reputation at all & we all knew that Agent Arry was a ****.
Saint Mikey Posted 27 June, 2011 Posted 27 June, 2011 On the subject of Branfoot's signings. Didn't he sign Micky Adams? He did well for us, as did Stuart Gray til he got injured. Steve Wood? I seem to remember him doing OK, but could be wrong. Plus Paul Allen was also decent. All of these will be outweighed by: Paul Moody Speedie Dixon Hurlock David Lee There must be more than this though? Anyone got a definitive list of Branfoot's signings? Can't find anything out there...
Horley CTFC Saint Posted 27 June, 2011 Posted 27 June, 2011 Charlie George was a waste of space and Perry Groves

JackFrost Posted 27 June, 2011 Posted 27 June, 2011 who did branflake sign that was good...??? Ken Monkou but that was about it
Thedelldays Posted 27 June, 2011 Posted 27 June, 2011 Ken Monkou but that was about it just imagine what would have happened to us if MLT had had enough and left..!!!111
JackFrost Posted 27 June, 2011 Posted 27 June, 2011 just imagine what would have happened to us if MLT had had enough and left..!!!111 Some people might find it surprising that the people who organised a lot of the early anti-Branfoot protests were SISA. This was when they actually were somebody and had a purpose, not like now where it's merely a name that a few egos live off in the media

ZebadeeRust Posted 27 June, 2011 Posted 27 June, 2011 I don't remember any massive fanfares when Dean Richards signed for us (from Wolves was it?). He was brilliant for Saints but for some reason he seems to get overlooked. Maybe he was overshadowed by Svensson who turned up shortly afterwards. Maybe people don't like the fact that he left for the Spuds. He certainly rose above my expectations. R.I.P Dean
Pat from Poole Posted 27 June, 2011 Posted 27 June, 2011 Ken Monkou but that was about it Monkou was a true legend, one of my favourite ever Saints players. I think Branfoot's signings of Beasant and Dowie were overall decent signings.
jjsaint Posted 27 June, 2011 Posted 27 June, 2011 It would be hard to outdo Delgado for flop signing. Anybody who played in our last two Championship seasons who wasn't pure sh*te exceeded expectations. Therefore I'd have to go with Jan-Paul Saeijs.
Greenridge Posted 27 June, 2011 Posted 27 June, 2011 I'm sure it's already been noted as we're 3 pages into the thread but Neil McCann is right up there for me. Utterly awful.

jjsaint Posted 27 June, 2011 Posted 27 June, 2011 I thought Kevin Miller would be awful and... This. He was only around for a short while but helped preserve our Championship status that season.
Super_Uwe Posted 27 June, 2011 Posted 27 June, 2011 I think in the grand scheme of things David Prutton turned out to be a bit of a flop. He never did a bad job for us by any means - and he will always be remembered fondly for his post-match laps of appreciation - but I remember the media coverage at the time bursting with praise about him as an England U21 international, full of potential etc. Never quite worked out for him really given that he's been trawling around the lower leagues since his mid-twenties.

Funnily enough Uwe Rosler scored how many goals for us? 2? I was excited about him signing initially
Super_Uwe Posted 27 June, 2011 Posted 27 June, 2011 Funnily enough Uwe Rosler scored how many goals for us? 2? I was excited about him signing initially Oh yeah, Uwe was s**** for us but he'll always be a cult hero in my eyes! Anyway, we got him on a free from Tennis Borussia Berlin (great name) so I guess my expectations were never all that high. I kind of figured he wasn't going to be at his Man City best when playing for a club like Tennis Borussia Berlin. No offence to Tennis Borussia Berlin fans out there of course...
