Dazza82 Posted 24 June, 2011 Posted 24 June, 2011 are we likely to get Billy Sharpe? No But we have a chance to sign Billy Sharp
S-Clarke Posted 24 June, 2011 Posted 24 June, 2011 Been out all day since just after this thread started Is there any truth in this rumour are we likely to get Billy Sharpe? I'm not sure John, but it was confirmed that they rejected a 2.8m bid from an unnamed championship club - rumours circulating in the doncaster press that it was us. But tbh - since last night, there's been nothing other than a few forum rumours.
derry Posted 24 June, 2011 Posted 24 June, 2011 My Daughter won't best pleased if Fish is the make-weight in the deal. £3m! amazing what players will sell for these days, but then compared to inflation of other things if Trevor Francis, who was a player of some repute in his day, sold for £1m back in 1979/80 (?) that would probably make Billy Sharpe £90,000 £150,000 tops back then. (Kevin Keegan european footballer of the year came to us around the same time for £450,000!! by comparison that was daylight robbery!!). Of course another thing, we have been so use to buying that'll do for the money players over the years, when we see this kind of money being spoken about many of us probably think we are buying a Superstar buy comparison to budget players we have bought. I think Keegan joined us on a free transfer when his contract ended at Hamburg.
miserableoldgit Posted 24 June, 2011 Posted 24 June, 2011 I think Keegan joined us on a free transfer when his contract ended at Hamburg. I seem to remember a fee of £800,000. Might be wrong though.

St Chalet Posted 24 June, 2011 Posted 24 June, 2011 Which is my point. Saints couldn't work out how to exploit them. Stoke could and do. Saints fans have never been the best judge of their assets on the pitch, and the proof is the long list of dissed ex-players who do well elsewhere. (I bet Fish will join the list too.) Ironic given he was pinging it a 6ft 8 inch beanpole in the form of his life,
NickG Posted 24 June, 2011 Posted 24 June, 2011 A few more fans ignorant to our financial state. bit like us on here then!
The Godfather Posted 24 June, 2011 Posted 24 June, 2011 I seem to remember a fee of £800,000. Might be wrong though. Keegan cost us half a million
Professor Posted 24 June, 2011 Posted 24 June, 2011 24 Jun 2011 09:28:39 Billy Sharp is signing for Southampton today subject to a medical, after Doncaster Rovers and The Saints agree a fee of £3m + Joseph Mills. above copied from Donny fans forum Ipswich bid £2.3m yesterday and had it turned down. All DRFC are saying is they have had a £3m + Bid in for him this morning from another CL club. Just a reminder that someone thought the rejected bid of less than £3m was from Ipswich, not West Ham.
StVince1966 Posted 24 June, 2011 Posted 24 June, 2011 why would michael owen rent his house out down here?where is he going to live?

Ivan Katalinic's 'tache Posted 24 June, 2011 Posted 24 June, 2011 Done deal then... Welcome aboard Sharp/Sharpe... Eh? Have I missed something?
miserableoldgit Posted 24 June, 2011 Posted 24 June, 2011 Done deal then... Welcome aboard Sharp/Sharpe... Next seasons attack force:-
The9 Posted 24 June, 2011 Posted 24 June, 2011 I was using poetic licence regarding relegation but I don't think I saw a single goal ever at SMS from the superthrows. One. Crouch near post header. But mostly we didn't use them well.
revolution saint Posted 24 June, 2011 Posted 24 June, 2011 Have to be honest, based on what I've seen, I wouldn't pay 2.8M for Sharp. That said, I've really not seen that much of him and Adkins will certainly know a lot about him so, if the rumours are true, then you have to back the manager on this one.

That's a good point actually. Sharp played at S****horpe under Adkins and did very well, so it's a player he knows well and he also knows how to get the best out of him. Perhaps Forte would get a few more games too. While I'm thinking, let's have Andy Keogh (if fully fit), Gary Hooper and Martin Paterson...!
Scudamore Posted 24 June, 2011 Posted 24 June, 2011 Eh? Have I missed something? Well some northern monkey on a forum said it's happening...
Dibden Purlieu Saint Posted 24 June, 2011 Posted 24 June, 2011 Indeed. I find it quite alarming that Lowe refused to pay £7 million for both Saha and Malbranque in one deal saying it would make our rivals stronger financially, but paid £4 million for a man who to all intents and purposes only has a long throw to boast about. Gareth Bale also has a hell of a throw on him by the way, so it's not as if it's a rarity in modern football. £7m for both was not the deal, it was £12m for both ffs.
Crazy Diamond Posted 24 June, 2011 Posted 24 June, 2011 £7m for both was not the deal, it was £12m for both ffs. Was it? I've not got my copy of 'Strachan' to hand. My mistake. It wasn't an anti-Lowe post in case people were wondering.

Wildgoose Posted 25 June, 2011 Posted 25 June, 2011 This morning one paper saying we have offered £3m for Billy Sharp......another that a £2.8m from Saints has been snubbed. Don't know whether the £3m is supposedly a new bid or not.....
NickG Posted 25 June, 2011 Posted 25 June, 2011 Doncaster have snubbed a £2.8million bid from Southampton for striker Billy Sharp - despite losing £1.5million a year. Saints boss Nigel Adkins, who worked with Sharp during his time in charge at S****horpe, wants the hit-man to boost his side's firepower following their promotion to the Championship. But Rovers chairman John Ryan has rejected the offer out of hand - just days after revealing that the Yorkshire outfit operate at a loss of more than £1.5million a season. And, even though Donny's season ticket sales are down by 2,000 on last year's total of 6,018, Ryan still feels he can dismiss the offer from St Mary's. Rovers rejected a £2.3million bid for Sharp, 25, from Ipswich earlier this month, and are determined to hang on to the marksman they signed from Sheffield United for £1.15million last summer. He notched 16 goals for Doncaster last term - despite managing only 27 games because of hamstring and hernia problems - and has scored 31 times in 66 appearances overall for the Keepmoat side. And, under the management of Brian Laws, and then Adkins at S****horpe, he netted 53 times in just 80 outings before making a £2million move to Bramall Lane four years ago. Donny have also turned down an improved offer of £400,000 from Ipswich for playmaker James Coppinger. The midfielder, 30, was initially valued at £300,000 when Tractor Boys boss Paul Jewell made a joint £2.6million bid for Coppinger and Sharp two weeks ago.
Hopkins Posted 25 June, 2011 Posted 25 June, 2011 Could get David goodwillie for 2m Bloke has a rape accusation hanging over his head as well as a court date for something else. He's well known for being a douche and has many friends who like to cause trouble while he is around. Am I right in thinking a lot of Rangers fans are fuming at the idea of him joining because they doubt very much moving to Glasgow will sort him out? No ta.
Badger Posted 25 June, 2011 Posted 25 June, 2011 Who? Dundee Utd striker, good player but as Hopkins pointed out bit of a problem off the field. Arsehole infact. Perhaps we should sign him and Gary Nadine who has been arrested again in the last week on a charge of suspected arson. Some players seem to be 'serial arseholes'. These two make Barnards fisticuffs look like the actions of a choirboy.
sadoldgit Posted 25 June, 2011 Posted 25 June, 2011 Plus we could be looking at free agents to fill those positions, would signing Neil Danns worry you?! Looks like Danns in on his way to Rangers.
Badger Posted 25 June, 2011 Posted 25 June, 2011 Would be interested in finding out how many of Sharp's goals over the last two seasons have been penalties. I have checked the two sites I know but no info on this. Any of you web experts know of any sites to reveal this ?

sadoldgit Posted 25 June, 2011 Posted 25 June, 2011 Delap - a premier league regular and arguably his team's main attacking weapon - would cost more than £4 million now. Can't believe that we didn't use him as effectively as Stoke. D'oh.
sammysaint Posted 25 June, 2011 Posted 25 June, 2011 The best paper for real stories (The Sun) says donny turned our new bid down... hes not a bad player i think him lambo guly and lee if hes not down for long would put us in a strong postion should players get injured drop in form etc..
NickG Posted 25 June, 2011 Posted 25 June, 2011 Sharp 2nd best strike rate last season http://www.statbunker.com/football/btb/index.php?PL=competition&CompID=325&statType=leadingGoalScorers for who was asking about how many were penalties looks from this site that they only scored 3 as a club
Badger Posted 25 June, 2011 Posted 25 June, 2011 (edited) Try this one http://www.doncasterrovers-mad.co.uk/footydb/loadtmrs.asp?ssnno=140&teamno=184 I think Four Penalties last season and the season before So four penalties out of fifteen league goals.Eleven from open play. The statbunker link in NickG's post would show that as 2.64 games per goal excl penalties. Is he such a prolific scorer as we think, scoring one in nearly three games ? Edited 25 June, 2011 by Badger

Badger Posted 25 June, 2011 Posted 25 June, 2011 But thats with Donnys style of play. Who's to say that our style of play, might not suit him better. Fair point. As the "flops and exceeded expectations "thread proves, you should not judge a players impact and contribution until they've had a chance. (With the exception of Dixon,Speedie and Hughes, where it was obvious to a f^cking idiot that they would not gel with us).
Matthew Le God Posted 25 June, 2011 Posted 25 June, 2011 So four penalties out of fifteen league goals.Eleven from open play. The statbunker link in NickG's post would show that as 2.64 games per goal excl penalties. Is he such a prolific scorer as we think, scoring one in nearly three games ? He was injured for 3 months and only started 27 games (two coming on as sub). So it is a better ratio than that. Also he was playing for team that only just stayed up so they didn't exactly set up a lot of chances for him. 15 goals in 27 starts at a level above Saints played last season is a very good record when all that is taken into consideration.

Not when he only scored one in five chances. Maybe they wouldn't have struggled so much if he was more prolific.

Matthew Le God Posted 25 June, 2011 Posted 25 June, 2011 (edited) Not when he only scored one in five chances. Maybe they wouldn't have struggled so much if he was more prolific. Quite a generalisation to categorise all chances as being equally easy/difficult. Edited 25 June, 2011 by Matthew Le God
Nexstar Posted 25 June, 2011 Posted 25 June, 2011 Not when he only scored one in five chances. Maybe they wouldn't have struggled so much if he was more prolific. Or maybe they wouldn't have struggled so much if other players were more prolific? Their top 4 scorers (besides Sharp) totalled 22. In comparison our top 4 (besides Lambert) managed 40.
