I am fairly confident in saying, Glenn Hoddle will be in Southampton next week.

He will be introduced to the players on Wednesday.

He is quite likely to train his players at Staplewood, but it will be 'behind closed doors' I am afraid.

Whether pro or anti GH, please don't get too excited about it, as he is only bringing a team from his academy to play Saints and should be boarding a homebound plane later that evening.

Apologies if this is already 'out there'.

Someone needs to make sure the club are forewarned so Staplewood security can be increased. Don't want a John Lennon moment.

I suppose it's just one of them things though.

Dalek will be creamimg his underpants.

Joe Strummer? - cool!

I saw the Clash at the Top Rank, oh, 30 years ago. Good times.

There is more chance of the Clash playing there again than Hoddle coming back to Saints (I hope).

got excited for a minute -not at Hoddle's return -but at a decent rumour been a bit dull on takeover front lately!

I assure you Nick, the match will happen. Glenn WILL be bringing a team to play Saints first team, behind closed doors next Wednesday, Kick Off 12 O'Clock.

I will leave it to others to speculate as to the real purpose of the game! ;)

What the same Saints first team that's playing Coventry on Tuesday night?

Doesn't sound very logical to me, still total football and all that.

Ah the SCW "football needs to find a way to bring late developers into the first team", added to Rupert's "Develop our own players" and moulded to the "Glenn Hoddle links with Southampton" conspiracy.

Well, I'm not at all surprised to see the concept of him using our facilities and players as test beds being rumoured, whether it is real or happens is another issue.

Let's hope he lends us a Ronaldo clone in January.....

True. Apparently Glen is a big fan of The Catcher in the Rye. Well he was in his previous life.

Arguably the best book ever written.

Parodied of course by David Mitchell Black Swan Green.

Oh, I thought it was a film with Kevin Costner in it??

What? suppose you mean the Field of Dreams connection.

I don't think the Catcher has ever been produced for the big screen, thought there was a project 2 years or so ago but I've no idea what's happening on that. There might have been a few amateur efforts though, I've never seen any of them and I'm quite a film buff.

Wiki says:

"According to a speculative article in The Guardian in May 2006, there are rumors that director Terrence Malick has been linked to a possible screen adaptation of the novel"

I thought I'd seen a screen version of it years ago but maybe it was a televised drama :smt102

I'm reading an interesting book at the moment called The History of Glue.

Well according to IMDB :- http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1206286/

and the reason why Catcher in the Rye will never be adapted for the big screen

Wow, the internet is full of useful information isn't it

The character author Tarrance Mann in Field of Dreams (1989) a movie of the book "Shoeless Joe" by W.P. Kinsella, is actually a character based on J.D. Salinger.

There was a film called the Catcher in the Rye (bout 1995/6) but it's complete tosh, nothing to do with Salinger.

Wow! I love this forum - a thread starts about Glenn Hoddle and, in the blink of an eye, it's all about JD Salinger and real/fake films. How can anybody quibble with the £5 membership fee?

Do you think the chap who wrote a review of the fake film actually bought a copy? I'm still chuckling at the thought of that!

Hence the connection back to John Lennon I guess!!

That was the reason for the original reference. Chapman was obsessed with TCITR, thinking it a source of many answers to life's riddles. He was also hearing voices at the time he shot Lennon. Apparently his room was full of copies of the book and the morning he kill JL he bought another copy, shot Lennon and then stayed at the scene reading TCITR until they arrested him.

Great book

That would be amazing! Although I'd expect it to be largely just a man, stood in a field of rye at dawn, listening to voices in his head.

don't think Holden actually stands in any rye fields.

The catcher in the rye is a poem that keeps running through his head. It's by Rabbie Burrrrns.

yep hoddle and his academy are playing a game behind close doors on the

29th at Stapleford.

Hoddle will also be bringing with him his revolutionary football coach

Im not sure of his full name but he is well known in spanish football

Does Javi ring a bell!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

one of those books you always hear mentioned but never read - whats it like?

The Catcher in the Rye?

Well I would put it on everybody's must read list, but then that's just me.

It's an insight into the workings of the fairly unbalanced adolescent mind.

Still to some I suppose it would seem archaic and out of date nowadays, but then so is Shakespeare et al.

I'm sure your local library has at least one copy.

He'll be standing outside staplewood with a banner saying: "welcome back Glenn"

This could be a good opportunity for all fans to show Glenn that we want him back to save our club !!!

I would be there to greet him if mooneying wasn't an arrestable offence.

What's that all about then, I thought this thread was a discussion of the works of J.D. Salinger not so far transformed for the cinema.

I thought the title was just to keep it under the mod-radar.

I'm sorry, its Hollywood disgrace that Catcher hasn't been transferred to the big screen, an absolute disgrace. I've heard there is a Bollywood version coming soon. There back on topic now.

Yup the Charwallah in the Chapati is sure to be a big box office success

in Hounslow.

Mind you I did quite like their version of Pride and Prejudice, most amusing.

Molami Bokoto who is on trial with the Saints, scored with a spectacular overhead kick as Saints drew 1-1 in yesterday's friendly against Glenn Hoddle’s Academy.

Where's you get that from MB? Also, he shares your initials!!!!!

Catcher would be very difficult to film though. How would you put in a lot of the internal monologues? Nearly all of the film would have to be voice- overs!

Ha ha ha so he does, got it from a journo mate, wasn't wrong last time so fingers crossed.

Who played MB?

I know a couple of 'senior players' (LOL) were signing calendars in the afternoon, did they put out a team of reserves?
