If it was slightly over and first time, they would be given the option of paying the duty on the things that were over.

Second offence and significantly over, destroyed and fine (Plus prosecution)

The Daily Mail would call for a flogging - and rightly so!

What would happen if someone was caught bringing slightly over their cigarette allowance into the UK?

Us Tories advocate a zero tollerence policy on all crime so hang the filthy scum I say

I think that limit is 200.

If you bring in 400 then, if caught, I think that you get asked to pay the Duty on it, providing that you haven't been trying to conceal too deeply. It is up to the discretion of the Customs official. You are liable, I believe, to a fine and confiscation. Obviously if you try and bring in a container load, then you are done for smuggling and likely to get a stretch of a few years.

I was hypothically thinking of about 600.

Does wrapping them in a towel in a suitcase constitute trying to conceal them too deeply?;)

600...! Make it worthwhile - go for 6k, if you get caught plead ignorance. The worst they can do is make you pay the duty, confiscate them or, if we on the forum have any luck, throw you in the slammer for a few weeks....!!! ;)

i think 200 was the old limit and i think in the eu their is no limit if it is for your own personal use.

i believe are uk customs normally regard 3,200 has a limit but i know someone who normally brings in 1,000 cigs from spain twice a year and is a heavy smoker.http://www.heathrow-airport-guide.co.uk/dutyfree.html

Winston Churchill would be turning in his grave. This sort of action is on a par with being a benefits scrounger or an illegal immigrant: taking away from the state. We can blame dune if the economy fails to grow.

Are we talking 600 boxes or 600 ciggies? Sorry, as a non-smoker I'm not sure which you mean, but I used to take the journey to france by tunnel or ferry 12 times a year, for 8 years, and I regularly saw people carrying bags with more than 600 (cigs) in them.

TOBACCO imports for personal use - 3,200 cigarettes, 200 cigars, 400 cigarillos, 3 Kg smoking tobacco (British citizens only) , this is how much your allowed to bring back on a coach ,,should be the same for everything:)

I was accompanying a news crew to UK customs at the Channel Tunnel in France and they pulled a bloke in a brand new Ford Scorpio (yes, it was a few years back) and they searched his car and found about 20 outers - 200 packets where his spare wheel should have been in the boot, they duly confiscated his car and the tobacco and fined him.
