bridge too far Posted 22 June, 2011 Posted 22 June, 2011 Awesome match on right now between a 5 foot nothing 40 year old Japanese woman against the 6 foot something 30 year old Venus Williams. Some of the best tennis I've seen for a long time.
Saintandy666 Posted 22 June, 2011 Posted 22 June, 2011 Best game of women's tennis I've ever seen thus far.
Colinjb Posted 22 June, 2011 Posted 22 June, 2011 (edited) Amazing that the last time this Kimiko Date-Krumm got to the Second Round of Wimbledon was 1994. Remarkable she's back in after retiring in 1996. Edited 22 June, 2011 by Colinjb
The Cat Posted 22 June, 2011 Posted 22 June, 2011 I'm kind of watching it, although for you to state that you can't have seen much tennis lately as it's riddled with errors! Djokovic vs Murray in the semis of the Rome Masters last month would live up to your statement. That was a sickeningly high standard of tennis.

But to compare men's tennis to women's tennis is unfair.

Saintandy666 Posted 22 June, 2011 Posted 22 June, 2011 Wow, just when you think Venus is going to break through Date-Krum breaks back!
LVSaint Posted 23 June, 2011 Posted 23 June, 2011 Was hoping the veteran could kick out Venus today. She makes such a revolting sound and worse when amplified through a covered centre court.
Thedelldays Posted 23 June, 2011 Posted 23 June, 2011 I think it is silly womans tennis at wimbledon gets the same prize money as the Mens
LGTL Posted 23 June, 2011 Posted 23 June, 2011 Equal prize money is OK but it should be best of 5 sets these days not 3. Some of them are more manly then the men!
Saintandy666 Posted 28 June, 2011 Posted 28 June, 2011 Equal prize money is OK but it should be best of 5 sets these days not 3. Some of them are more manly then the men! No point, the standard of tennis is bad enough in the first few rounds without making them play 2 extra sets! The men are just fitter.

Colinjb Posted 28 June, 2011 Posted 28 June, 2011 I think they're stronger rather than fitter. Correct.

the stain Posted 28 June, 2011 Posted 28 June, 2011 Arazenka has the weirdest grunt in tennis Can you post a picture of her grunt?
Thedelldays Posted 28 June, 2011 Posted 28 June, 2011 womens tennis is god awful.. it is a travesty to nadal/federer and anyone who beats these two that they get the same prize money at wimbledon.... equal rights eh....when the hat fits I spose
Turkish Posted 28 June, 2011 Posted 28 June, 2011 womens tennis is god awful.. it is a travesty to nadal/federer and anyone who beats these two that they get the same prize money at wimbledon.... equal rights eh....when the hat fits I spose What amazes me about the game is that someone like Murray can have £16m of "winnings" without ever actually winning anything. The tennis equivilent of the Emirates trophy does not count. As for women getting equal money, of they want it they should play best of 5 as well. Womens tennis is awful, they shouldn't even show it on the telly, and as for mixed doubles, what's the point?

Turkish Posted 28 June, 2011 Posted 28 June, 2011 Bit like runners up in football leagues then nothing like it at all actually.
The Cat Posted 29 June, 2011 Posted 29 June, 2011 It shouldn't be termed 'winnings' when 'prize money' is a whole lot more appropriate. Also I'd say winning ATP Masters events is more the equivalent of Premier League than some cacky friendly cup, whereas the Grand Slams are a step above like the Champions League, World Cup or European Championships.
The Cat Posted 29 June, 2011 Posted 29 June, 2011 This Tsonga vs Federer match is making the best women's game look like a Sunday afternoon knockabout at the Sports Centre.

Rather ironic I think. Fair play to Tsonga though what a comeback! Can't see past Nadal winning though

Grand Slams are the only ones that matter. It's like a boxer being world champion, no one is interested in British or European titles.
Julian H. Cope Posted 30 June, 2011 Posted 30 June, 2011 Grand Slams are the only ones that matter. It's like a boxer being world champion, no one is interested in British or European titles. This. We should only play the big four tournaments throughout the year. Every sanctioned boxing match should also have a world title on the line. We should disband the Football League while we are at it, no one is interested in that.
angelman Posted 30 June, 2011 Posted 30 June, 2011 Can't watch the women playing tennis as this grunting is so f***ing off putting. It's worse than Japanese porn and they don't half moan in those flicks.

Bet you dont know but have heard of the world champion. When Andy Murray retires if he hasn't won a grand slam his major titles will have a big fat 0 in the colunm and he'll be nearly man, just like Henman. I dont recall them showing Bjorn Borgs wins at Queens 20 years after they happened.

Did you hear that horny b*tch lezzerenka climaxing her way through her match with klitoris today? ffs, I thought the van radio had somehow picked up porntube or something, and the commentators knew it as well, "and she's probing more deeply now"...."that forehand was drilled home with real penetration"...etc etc

Chris Byrd was one of the World Heavyweight Champions. He's not very famous. I bet there's loads of Boxing World Title holders at the moment that you haven't heard of. However I bet you know who Henry Cooper, Spencer Oliver, Gary Mason and Matthew Hatton are. None of whom ever won a world belt. If Murray never wins a grand slam then he'll still be remembered as a great player, just one unfortunate to be playing at a time when the 2 best players ever have been hoovering up pretty much all the big titles.

Okay not a great example but you get the point. That kind of logic always makes me laugh. Surely to be a champion you have to beat the best, that is the point. There are great players in every era, Nadal and Feder are fantastic players but so were McEnroe, Borg, Samprass, Lendell, Laver etc etc. It's like saying if only Barcelona weren't so good Man United would be the best team in the world, if only Ali wasn't around then Henry Cooper would have been world champion, if only Jack Nicklaus hadn't been so good etc etc. If Murray wins no grand slams then he shouldn't be remembered as a great player, he wasn't, he should be remembered as a nearly man, which he will be, not quite up to it when it mattered. I know British people are conditioned to back the plucky loser but maybe that is the reason why we so often fail when it really matters, by winning major trophies and titles, when most people in this coutry resent success and glorious faliure often makes people more popular than actually winning something now and again.
Thedelldays Posted 30 June, 2011 Posted 30 June, 2011 at the end of the day...womens tennis is shyt and they only get equal prize money to satisfy the feminists of this world

bridge too far Posted 3 July, 2011 Author Posted 3 July, 2011 Looks like being a close run, high quality final today. My bets are on Nadal but there's nothing between them ATM.
SNSUN Posted 3 July, 2011 Posted 3 July, 2011 Djokovic lost his way a little but I still think he'll pull this out of the bag. That said, if there's anyone you don't want on the other side of the court when you're not playing well, it's Nadal. Djokovic to edge it over 5 sets.
Turkish Posted 3 July, 2011 Posted 3 July, 2011 How unlucky is Murray though, now there is another player who is significantly better than him on the circuit. If only these top players didn't exist FFS.
scotty Posted 3 July, 2011 Posted 3 July, 2011 Murray wont be British much longer the way the Scots are heading. ( imho of course)
Badger Posted 3 July, 2011 Posted 3 July, 2011 Murray wont be British much longer the way the Scots are heading. ( imho of course) Saw Alex Salmon in the crowd at Wimbledon today, no doubt reserved his seat in expectation in being able to revel in a Scottish success story. At least he can go home saying he saw a "djok" win at Wimbledon.
