hamster Posted 21 June, 2011 Posted 21 June, 2011 Respect Jamie, not dissimilar to my narroboat mate.
badgerx16 Posted 22 June, 2011 Posted 22 June, 2011 Respect Jamie, not dissimilar to my narrowboat mate. Spends most of it's time underwater ?
Dimond Geezer Posted 22 June, 2011 Posted 22 June, 2011 I wanted to watch this but we ended up with guests, so only caught the odd bit. I was puzzled why the commander has to do mental calculations when working out the range/speed etc of approaching vessels. Surely with modern technology there could be a gadget in the periscope that can do this with more speed & accuracy? This may have been answered in the programme, or I may have got hold of the wrong end of the stick, bearing in mind my opening sentence. There was a programme similar to this in the 80's, and I remember that a failed commander could no longer serve on a sub, is this still the case?

Watch the next episode, the spoiler at the end of last night's ended with "his career in the submarine service is over".
Huffton Posted 22 June, 2011 Posted 22 June, 2011 WAs this the docu about the perisher course? Watched it last time they showed it. The teacher is a right tough bastard!I was puzzled why the commander has to do mental calculations when working out the range/speed etc of approaching vessels. Surely with modern technology there could be a gadget in the periscope that can do this with more speed & accuracy? THere probably is, but what if it breaks in the middle of a fight?

hamster Posted 22 June, 2011 Posted 22 June, 2011 I assume that the brain is also far quicker than any gizmo and in a conflict situation someone has to make (what we in social services call (a 'dynamic risk assesment') .. In all seriousness Jamie, fair play to you submariners.
Thedelldays Posted 22 June, 2011 Author Posted 22 June, 2011 (edited) I assume that the brain is also far quicker than any gizmo and in a conflict situation someone has to make (what we in social services call (a 'dynamic risk assesment') .. In all seriousness Jamie, fair play to you submariners. try some of the drills for real, with real units against you who dont like you, against a nation trying to force you away from their assets or actually deploying SF (and picking them up) actually launching TLAM against real targets that you then hear about in the news...or sometimes you dont hear about it....its gets all rather exciting.....lol will leave it to your imagination as to where and when we do this... as we say in the service... there are two types of vessels....Submarines...and targets.. we are very much operational whilst our "skimmer" counter parts are very much decorational.. Thedelldays Posted 22 June, 2011 Author Posted 22 June, 2011 taped tonights (no spoilers please!) enjoyed yesterdays episode. the gf said about watching it as her uncle is in the service. did not think it was as good tonight...next weeks (tues) looks to be much better...as it features a huge exercise (i was on the other sub they are talking about at the very end (for next week), giving it a good spanking around the irish sea)
View From The Top Posted 22 June, 2011 Posted 22 June, 2011 Is it a series about the Perisher Course?
Thedelldays Posted 22 June, 2011 Author Posted 22 June, 2011 Is it a series about the Perisher Course? Yes, filmed towards end of last year. Think it may have been on bravo or something like that already
View From The Top Posted 22 June, 2011 Posted 22 June, 2011 Yes, filmed towards end of last year. Think it may have been on bravo or something like that already I watched it on Discovery HD. That's one tough course.
Thedelldays Posted 22 June, 2011 Author Posted 22 June, 2011 I watched it on Discovery HD. That's one tough course. I know one of them definitely passes as he is my newish XO.
Kadeem Hardison Posted 23 June, 2011 Posted 23 June, 2011 When does Big Brother start on Channel Five?
Dimond Geezer Posted 23 June, 2011 Posted 23 June, 2011 2. yes, if they fail they will never go to sea on an submarine again Why is that, even if the guy isn't cut-out to be a commander, he is still an experienced, intelligent bloke. There must be something useful he could do?
Thedelldays Posted 23 June, 2011 Author Posted 23 June, 2011 Why is that, even if the guy isn't cut-out to be a commander, he is still an experienced, intelligent bloke. There must be something useful he could do? Because it's part of the pressure of the course and if he remained in the service he would have no chance of advancement and be in the place of someone who is a potential commander. When they pass perisher they don't command straight away. They will be an XO first and have to prove themselves all over again. There could be a chance of passing perisher and never commanding a sub As with everything in my world, fail at being a submariner, you get dumped to the surface fleet...

Thanks for the answers.
Durleyfos Posted 23 June, 2011 Posted 23 June, 2011 Watched it last night, very interesting. I love the nicknames people get. A bloke with the surname Wragg was called 'Oily' genius. even the voiceover man was calling him oily.
Thedelldays Posted 28 June, 2011 Author Posted 28 June, 2011 next episode tonight...i was on the other sub they were "playing" with
Thedelldays Posted 28 June, 2011 Author Posted 28 June, 2011 Did you just get sunk? no..I was on the other UK sub that is about to be on... we got the first shot in first...and therefore, won
Thedelldays Posted 28 June, 2011 Author Posted 28 June, 2011 They sunk you again they cut the bit out where the two subs make initial contact....at the start of the exercise and we got one off...and unofficially 'won" some very clever editing there..haha, they never showed us below the "layer" and giving them a spanking
hamster Posted 28 June, 2011 Posted 28 June, 2011 Serious question Jamie. How come you get to spend so much time on the forum when that appears to be such an away from home job? And do you still enjoy it?
Thedelldays Posted 29 June, 2011 Author Posted 29 June, 2011 Serious question Jamie. How come you get to spend so much time on the forum when that appears to be such an away from home job? And do you still enjoy it? Been lucky in that I have not been away much in the last 2 years. In the next 18 months or so, that is going to change dramatically Do I enjoy it? No, not at all. After years of cut backs (we have been getting cuts for years) the job is shyt. Trouble is, what do I leave for? Done 12 years. Enough for anyone I should think.
