St_Tel49 Posted 23 June, 2011 Posted 23 June, 2011 (edited) The trouble is NickG a lot of our competitors don't cut their cloth according to what they sow. Whereas NC is the opposite - therefore we will lose out to the likes of West Ham etc who are clearly going on a sh+t or bust initiative. Its very frustrating thatr following the circus that was Pompey FC that other clubs are allowed to keep accumulating debt. Clubs that are run among proper lines are therefore penalised. Sh+t or bust most usually ends in bust. Reading got promotion with a set of astutely bought cheap players. Spending big money is not an automatic panacea and I really don't think we should hurl money around just because we have it. Spend well rather than spend big is the watchword. Reckon will lose out to likes of West Ham - despite the bizarre comments of their manager yesterday on their finances and how they need to cut their spending. Really don't know how our spending will go - Cortesse talks about being sensible, but he ain't stupid and knows what is needed to get promotion. Salaries, signing on fees and transfer fees since he came here weren't sustainable for a league 1 club without promotion and outside investment - will he have same approach for championship level???

West Ham?? well you can probably get 10 Kevin Nolan's for the price of 1 Scott Parker and on a lesser salary as well.Losing loan players like Keane and Bridge will lighten their salary mass enormously and for all they contributed last season one will probably hardly notice the difference at the end of the day.West Ham are going to be major players in the NPC and compared to eventual sales and reduced salaries their actual spending is negligeable.
saintscottofthenortham Posted 23 June, 2011 Posted 23 June, 2011 We spend more than we make. As said above. In our first season under Liebherr we lost £7,000,000. I would have thought it would be about the same again last season. I can't see the Liebherr's settling for mediocrity in the championship having spent around £15,000,000 on operating the club over two seasons and the coat to buy the club and pay the debts. I think it will be a case of strengthen the spine of the squad this summer and establish in the championship with a settled squad then make serious push for promotion following season. That fits with the 5 year plan. Really don't understand why so many of you continue to question the Liebherr's commitment despite the obvious drain we are on them and what Cortese continues to say.

Where's your evidence for this? Are you an accountant at SMS?
Window Cleaner Posted 23 June, 2011 Posted 23 June, 2011 Where's your evidence for this? Are you an accountant at SMS? don't need to be, the accounts were submitted to companies house and someone obtained them and posted them on this very forum. They showed losses much as described by STScott and some hefty debts which most wll deny us having of course.
Matthew Le God Posted 23 June, 2011 Posted 23 June, 2011 They showed losses much as described by STScott and some hefty debts which most wll deny us having of course. Can anyone give the date when these "debts" have to be paid back by? No, the accounts make no mention of that.

The "loan" that showed up on the accounts could be anything and would be from the owners. Wether they end up being paid back or not. The main thing is we font have loans in the sense that if we don't keep Barclays happy then we end up in shít.
NickG Posted 23 June, 2011 Posted 23 June, 2011 still to be convinced West Ham will go up, know DellDays thinks they are walking it but there is still a lot wrong with the club - if they don't have a good start pressure will be intense

Sitting here waiting to be shot at. West Ham have HUGE money problems, not to mention high-salaried players to be paid, and the parachute payments may disappear just covering those wages. They MAY start the season well, but I don't think they'll even make the play-offs! See how wrong I can be ...I think either one of the other two relegated sides will look good and go back up - as will Leicester. Sven-Göran Eriksson is very shrewd and will have a good squad and is a team we have to watch IMHO.

david in sweden Posted 23 June, 2011 Posted 23 June, 2011 DellDays won't agree - the trophy was delivered with Nolan! not that he doesn't have interesting opinions, but I often find that I don't agree with dell days viewpoints, .........and I was a regular at The Dell for many years.

It's called " long-term investment "... ...and there are certain benefits to showing a loss once in a while (as I'm sure that Mr. Cortese is well aware of.)
Saint Garrett Posted 23 June, 2011 Posted 23 June, 2011 Still dont understand how West Ham have afforded to pay 6m for Nolan. + 45k a week,

Well I'd rather lose out than have to again go through the kind of torment that we went through just 2 seasons ago. I want promotion but NEVER at the cost of financial instability. If nothing come along then that's life. However there is still plenty of time yet so let's see what the manager and board can come up with.
Fitzhugh Fella Posted 23 June, 2011 Posted 23 June, 2011 well a couple of (interesting) slightly mixed PROVERBS there, Duncan ..cutting your coat according to their cloth ( Hindu mystic Baba Ramdevji c.1400) ....but I do believe they may well... up and away Posted 23 June, 2011 Posted 23 June, 2011 £4 million for Maynard?? He might be good but blimey, Hernandez was only £6 million. I don't blame Cortese for not getting involved in these ridiculous deals. Bearing in mind we have appointed an international scout, he has to earn that salary and the value does not seem to lie with uk players at the moment.
Raging Bull Posted 23 June, 2011 Posted 23 June, 2011 I'd be very uncomfortable if I were a Hammers fan, the owners are playing a very silly game, unless however they are sure they can sell Upton park for a lot of money when they move into to Olympic site. Also is it next year you can only spend what you earn, if so maybe the club are thinking bugger it this is the last time we could spend like this.
NickG Posted 23 June, 2011 Posted 23 June, 2011 that West Ham reporter on talksport was going on yesterday how they are easily biggest side in league and will comfortably get promoted
hypochondriac Posted 23 June, 2011 Posted 23 June, 2011 that West Ham reporter on talksport was going on yesterday how they are easily biggest side in league and will comfortably get promoted He is probably right.
saintscottofthenortham Posted 23 June, 2011 Posted 23 June, 2011 that West Ham reporter on talksport was going on yesterday how they are easily biggest side in league and will comfortably get promoted There were a few hammers on Talksport after that who had a very different opinion.
Saint Without a Halo Posted 23 June, 2011 Posted 23 June, 2011 I think West Ham will likely go up, but what they're doing isn't good for football and at some point has to stop. As others say, their tactics usually end in going bust. I can't believe so many clubs are prepared to risk that, but then you look at the example of Portsmouth and they just haven't been given enough of a deterrant. Even if West Ham make it up, another club will follow suit, fail and go into administration. We felt we would go straight back up with our squad when we went down to the championship and look what happened to us. Playing in the championship is very different to the premiership as Westham will find out You ned a hardworking team to get promoted (as evidnced by QPR and Norwich) not a bunch of overpaid prima donnas
Colinjb Posted 23 June, 2011 Posted 23 June, 2011 that West Ham reporter on talksport was going on yesterday how they are easily biggest side in league and will comfortably get promoted Ah the Moose. He really is a bit of an idiot. Blinkered as some on the Skates forums.

I think the Hammers are going to have a nasty shock. The way they are going about it they are making themselves even more of a scalp than they would have been already with signings like Nolan. Add the fact that Big Sam's style of hoofball, whilst having limited success in the prem when playing teams who are going all out on you, I think it will be a very different story in the NPC.
NickG Posted 23 June, 2011 Posted 23 June, 2011 he reckoned by far the biggest club, without a doubt -err Leeds, Leicester, Birmingham, Middlesborough, Coventry, Notts F, saints, - are all similar to West Ham.
Fitzhugh Fella Posted 23 June, 2011 Posted 23 June, 2011 he reckoned by far the biggest club, without a doubt -err Leeds, Leicester, Birmingham, Middlesborough, Coventry, Notts F, saints, - are all similar to West Ham. Depends by which criteria you measure it by. For me it would be average gate - therefore Leeds and WHU "outdo" us, Leicester probably equal, possibly Forest too while we beat Boro and Coventry. Not scientific I know but this way we are WAY above the blue few.
Colinjb Posted 23 June, 2011 Posted 23 June, 2011 he reckoned by far the biggest club, without a doubt -err Leeds, Leicester, Birmingham, Middlesborough, Coventry, Notts F, saints, - are all similar to West Ham. Really, really no.

Coventry!!!??? PaaaaaaaaaaaaaHAHAHAHAAHAHHAHAAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAAHHAAHAHHA!!!!
NickG Posted 23 June, 2011 Posted 23 June, 2011 shows what I think of WHU - hardly have them in awe, just another club about same size as Cov!!
sammysaint Posted 23 June, 2011 Posted 23 June, 2011 He would be a good striker for us if we sign him we need a pacey striker who can finish.. If only banard or lambo had fortes pace. Regards to biggest club West ham and Leeds are the biggest two in this league with us and 3/4 others fighting for top 3 depending on how good our fans are gonna be and turn up to home games.
NickG Posted 24 June, 2011 Posted 24 June, 2011 didn't mean to start the whole 'big club' debate again sorry . Just was surprised at the sports reporter on talksport talking at though Chelsea had just come down not West Ham.
skintsaint Posted 24 June, 2011 Posted 24 June, 2011 4m hahaha no thanks. Only a year on his contract and his goalscoring isnt that brilliant to be paying that amount.
Crab Lungs Posted 24 June, 2011 Posted 24 June, 2011 Really, really no. Likewise Boro and Brum. They're not bigger. Forest, Leeds, WHU yes, probably bigger or with bigger potential. Leicester is right about the same size.
