SO16_Saint Posted 21 June, 2011 Posted 21 June, 2011 Saints express interest in Maynard. Source: BBC Sorry if posted elsewhere...
CWD Posted 21 June, 2011 Posted 21 June, 2011 This will probably get moved into the rumours thread, but it's good news that the BBC have picked up on it. They don't tend to print things like this unless they have some real inside knowledge. Maynard would be an absolutely quality signing, but should we really be spending upwards of 3 million on a striker, when most people believe we are weakest at CB and CM?
St.Bart -No.1 Posted 21 June, 2011 Posted 21 June, 2011 http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/13856746.stm
Dibden Purlieu Saint Posted 21 June, 2011 Posted 21 June, 2011 Maynard is an utterly brilliant player. Would be over the moon with this one.
jamesfp1 Posted 21 June, 2011 Posted 21 June, 2011 this would be amazing! would show a real sign(ing) of intent
jamesfp1 Posted 21 June, 2011 Posted 21 June, 2011 most people believe we are weakest at CB and CM? You are never weakest at CB with Fonte in your team. Although we do need a better partner for him.
damers Posted 21 June, 2011 Posted 21 June, 2011 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4dgxf-FuNbc Yes Please........
Glasgow_Saint Posted 21 June, 2011 Posted 21 June, 2011 Leicester are going to be v.strong next season
danny91973 Posted 21 June, 2011 Posted 21 June, 2011 Maynard is an excellent striker, seen him play on a few occasions for city always scored. Pacy, strong and can score from inside and outside the box. A bit like jermaine defoe.
CWD Posted 21 June, 2011 Posted 21 June, 2011 I'd have thought spending £3m on a striker makes it MORE likely we'll spend on a defender or CM. ie. money is there and we mean business. I would tend to agree with you. As people have said, it would be a massive sign of intent. (my previous post was just to act as devil's advocate)
Windmill Arm 2 Posted 21 June, 2011 Posted 21 June, 2011 Put your choppers away, we won't sign Maynard.
Glasgow_Saint Posted 21 June, 2011 Posted 21 June, 2011 Put your choppers away, we won't sign Maynard. But according to you we will sign............ Totti!! Haha
saints-cris Posted 21 June, 2011 Posted 21 June, 2011 Would be nice. Dont see it happening though.. 4mil is pretty steep
saintscottofthenortham Posted 21 June, 2011 Posted 21 June, 2011 Would be chuffed to bits if we signed him.
thefunkygibbons Posted 21 June, 2011 Posted 21 June, 2011 Who knows how much NC has to play with this year?
Matthew Le God Posted 21 June, 2011 Posted 21 June, 2011 4mil is pretty steep It would also match Saints' record signing as a Premier League team for Rory Delap!
saintrich Posted 21 June, 2011 Posted 21 June, 2011 Pointless thread. Already covered in the rumour thread. We won't beat Leicester to sign him. At least we're aiming high.
The Cat Posted 21 June, 2011 Posted 21 June, 2011 We'll see lots of players linked with us over the summer, mainly due to our perceived financial position and the need to sign a few quality players. When talking to the media it's easy for agents to include our name in a list of 3 or 4 clubs chasing a player to bump his price up or gain him a better contract as his current employers.
SuperMikey Posted 21 June, 2011 Posted 21 June, 2011 It would also match Saints' record signing as a Premier League team for Rory Delap! I thought Delap cost £7m?
Colinjb Posted 21 June, 2011 Posted 21 June, 2011 I thought Delap cost £7m? Nope, 'just' 4 million. Don't know what would be more more embarrassing. Having him as our record transfer or the prospect of spending that much on him!!!
norwaysaint Posted 21 June, 2011 Posted 21 June, 2011 It would also match Saints' record signing as a Premier League team for Rory Delap! We paid 4.5m for Delgado, okay they officially split it as 3.5 for delgado and 1m for Chala, but we all know it was really 4.5 m for Delgado, unless you really think we chose to buy Chala for that.
SuperMikey Posted 21 June, 2011 Posted 21 June, 2011 F*cking hell, in today's transfer money that's about £10m... what a rip-off!
Charlie Wayman Posted 21 June, 2011 Posted 21 June, 2011 Maynard is an excellent striker, seen him play on a few occasions for city always scored. Pacy, strong and can score from inside and outside the box. A bit like jermaine defoe. Eriksson obviously likes him but why aren't the PL clubs in for him? With their budgets he'd be a gift at £3m so something doesn't add up. Second, who gets shipped out to make way Ricky, Lee or David as this guy looks like he would be an automatic first choice on the team sheet? No way we'll keep all those strikers happy and what about Guly who is at his magical best running off Ricky

No way we'll keep all those strikers happy and what about Guly who is at his magical best running off Ricky I think Connolly and Barnard wont be expecting to be starting too much this season, but the end of last season showed how vital it is to have quality players ready to come in when needed.

No way we'll keep all those strikers happy and what about Guly who is at his magical best running off Ricky It's a fair point. We apparently have bought in players who are capable of making the step up as the club progressed. Well, we've made one step up, surely it would be a little remiss not to give them a chance now we're here.

No way we'll keep all those strikers happy and what about Guly who is at his magical best running off Ricky Have been wondering this myself. A lot of rumours linking us to strikers but with Guly we already have 4. Would quite like to see us linked to some proper Centre Backs to be honest although I would love to get someone like Maynard.

No way we'll keep all those strikers happy Why would someone need to leave? You can't go into a 46 League game campaign with two or three first team strikers in your squad. Four (possibly five if you include Guly) is a good size.
NickG Posted 21 June, 2011 Posted 21 June, 2011 echo says its not happening http://twitter.com/#!/gordonsimpson
hypochondriac Posted 21 June, 2011 Posted 21 June, 2011 There is no chance of us beating Leicester to a signing. We have simply enquired.
Colinjb Posted 21 June, 2011 Posted 21 June, 2011 Oh well. Right, who will be the next diversion I wonder? I'll start by putting 5p on it being Darren Ambrose.
Prince Jazzbo Posted 21 June, 2011 Posted 21 June, 2011 Nope, 'just' 4 million. Don't know what would be more more embarrassing. Having him as our record transfer or the prospect of spending that much on him!!! What I cant work out is, that with Stoke, his long throws very often paid off with goals. He did it once here against Sunderland I think.

I think it was against Everton, the year we went down. Throw in from the Itchen/Northam corner, found Crouchy at the near-post and goal.

NickG Posted 21 June, 2011 Posted 21 June, 2011 AThere is no chance of us beating Leicester to a signing. We have simply enquired. Why
jimmysaint7 Posted 21 June, 2011 Posted 21 June, 2011 What's with all this we will never beat Leicester to sign a player?when did they become a bigger club than us? We been out the championship 2 years but how many years have we finished above them.
Appy Posted 21 June, 2011 Posted 21 June, 2011 It probably isn't happening, but to listen to the Echo as gospel is silly.
Leicestersaint Posted 21 June, 2011 Posted 21 June, 2011 There is no chance of us beating Leicester to a signing. We have simply enquired. yes - why isn't there?!
hypochondriac Posted 21 June, 2011 Posted 21 June, 2011 A Why Because they are prepared to pay higher wages and transfer fees than us. There is no evidence which suggests otherwise.
saintscottofthenortham Posted 21 June, 2011 Posted 21 June, 2011 yes - why isn't there?! Because he's a negative bore who needs something to moan about.
S-Clarke Posted 21 June, 2011 Posted 21 June, 2011 At least, if anything, it shows the level of player we're after - and that's only positive.
hypochondriac Posted 21 June, 2011 Posted 21 June, 2011 Because he's a negative bore who needs something to moan about. I would rather you didn't answer for me. In fact I would rather you just ignored my posts if you find them boring. Thanks.
hypochondriac Posted 21 June, 2011 Posted 21 June, 2011 At least, if anything, it shows the level of player we're after - and that's only positive. Possibly, presuming we actually get some of these players and we offer a half decent price for them.
S-Clarke Posted 21 June, 2011 Posted 21 June, 2011 Possibly, presuming we actually get some of these players and we offer a half decent price for them. Well yeah, but at least it shows that the feelers are looking at the right level - rather than average players on free transfers as people feared. Nicky Maynard was never going to be free, so there is obviously money to play with otherwise we wouldn't have bothered enquiring. £4m + for a player with 1 year left is OTT though and I wouldn't want us to pay that.
JustMike Posted 21 June, 2011 Posted 21 June, 2011 Because they are prepared to pay higher wages and transfer fees than us. There is no evidence which suggests otherwise. yes there is, their bid was rejected. In all fairness neither you or I know what has been offered and to whom. Lets just judge once window shuts
