hypochondriac Posted 18 June, 2011 Posted 18 June, 2011 My point is it is not a very good return from the Academy in the last few years except for OXO and we dont know whether he wants to stay In terms of profit it has been fantastic!
Matthew Le God Posted 18 June, 2011 Posted 18 June, 2011 My point is it is not a very good return from the Academy in the last few years Had those players not been sold the financial situation would have been even worse.
CitySaint Posted 18 June, 2011 Posted 18 June, 2011 Quite sad to see him go, quite a nice chap as well. Met him out when he was suspended following his Bournemouth Kung Fu kick, it was a friday night. Me and mates went over to speak to him and ask him for a photo but he informed us it was club policy that no-one was allowed out on a friday night before a game suspended or not, 2 minutes later we look over and is secretly pouring alcohol into a glass so no-one can see. We saw, he later spoke to us and was quite sound, but asked us to promise we wouldn't tell anyone. We didn't, but he's left the club now so it doesn't matter. Football wise, probably not quite good enough, was improving though.
Saint Malc Posted 18 June, 2011 Posted 18 June, 2011 For those that saw Gobern at Brentford, no one should shed a tear at this news. Never did anything at all for me (during his sub appearances the lot).

S-Clarke Posted 18 June, 2011 Posted 18 June, 2011 did you miss his goal in the brentford game to make it 3-1 in the 91st minute? 3-0 hth.
sidthesquid Posted 18 June, 2011 Posted 18 June, 2011 Thanks Goodbye Good Luck That. Tbh he was never going to get many games in the CCC for us. 30+ games for Udders in League One might kickstart his career.
SNSUN Posted 18 June, 2011 Posted 18 June, 2011 Walcott Bale Blackstock Mills Crainie Surman Best Chamberlain Lallana All good players that came out of our academy and the reason people say our academy is so good. It does produce players not in that class and Gobern was one of them. A competent player but rarely more than ok. Not Premiership quality for sure but hope he does his bit for Huddersfield.
Crazy Diamond Posted 18 June, 2011 Posted 18 June, 2011 That. Tbh he was never going to get many games in the CCC for us. 30+ games for Udders in League One might kickstart his career. I've got my doubts he'll even get that many games there to be honest. It's not that I don't rate him at all, I'm sure he can be useful, but Huddersfield can afford to buy decent players and have a good midfield already. Really not sure what he adds to them other than depth - which is what he would have provided had he stayed with us.
Dimond Geezer Posted 18 June, 2011 Posted 18 June, 2011 That's a shame, I quite liked him, I thought he was relatively solid & dependable without being flash. He's a young lad who will get better. Good luck to him.
NickG Posted 18 June, 2011 Posted 18 June, 2011 he could go onto be decent player, good physique decent touch but looks some way of being ready for our first 11 - before any signings - so probably makes sense for him

He's a young lad who will get better. Good luck to him. He's not all that young, 20 ish I think, plenty of players of his age have 60/70/80 first team appearances to their name by then, especially when their club has done a 2 stretch in the third tier of English football.Relegation to this level was an opportunity to seize for players like Gobern and unfortunately he never did.He got a chance to show what he could do when we had injury problems in his sector, unfortunately for him the pr@t just went wild and got a 3 match suspension.Had he not done that he may have got more of a chance to show his mettle. St_Tel49 Posted 18 June, 2011 Posted 18 June, 2011 I think that he is a good kid and I wish him luck. If he really did have all those offers then his decision was clearly based on the chance to play and not necessarily the money so hats off to him for that. He'll be back to haunt us!
Crowds Posted 19 June, 2011 Posted 19 June, 2011 Potential to be wildly mediocre one day in npc/L1. Not what we need for our premiership ambitions!!
saintpat Posted 19 June, 2011 Posted 19 June, 2011 I think it's a shame he's gone but at 20 he obviously wants to be playing more games and I'm sure he felt that his opportunities at Saints were going to be limited next season. I think that he's a far better player than many on here and that in another 2-3 years he'll be proving his doubters on here wrong.
VectisSaint Posted 19 June, 2011 Posted 19 June, 2011 He's not all that young, 20 ish I think, plenty of players of his age have 60/70/80 first team appearances to their name by then, especially when their club has done a 2 stretch in the third tier of English football.Relegation to this level was an opportunity to seize for players like Gobern and unfortunately he never did.He got a chance to show what he could do when we had injury problems in his sector, unfortunately for him the pr@t just went wild and got a 3 match suspension.Had he not done that he may have got more of a chance to show his mettle. He was 20 in January, has had 1 full season to try to establish himself (most of 2009/10 he was either on load or receovering from op on his hip). It is again one of the problems of the Youth/Academy system that players in certain positions take longer to mature in a footbaling sense - keepers, centre backs, centre mids, all get dumped out of academies too soon, in my opinion. You need maturity and football intelligence to play these positions effectively. I realise Spiderman is about the same age, but thats why he is so highly thought of, he has a lot of this maturity beyond his years already, very rare. I think Gobern would have eventually been a good CM but clearly he doesn't want to hang around waiting and thinks he can do better. My preference would have been to keep but put out on loan, but I read into this that there are more CMs about to be signed and OG knows this.
southamptonfclegend Posted 19 June, 2011 Posted 19 June, 2011 he is absolute dog sh*te. good riddance.
sotonjoe Posted 19 June, 2011 Posted 19 June, 2011 Looked awkward in League One, spent a lot of time on his backside IMO and won't have a chance of cutting it in the Champ without a lot of practice. I don't think we've got the time to give him the 1st team football he will need if he is to develop, so off he goes.
david in sweden Posted 19 June, 2011 Posted 19 June, 2011 Tribunal indemnity?? 125K at most, more likely than not a lot less. Strange how few seem to appreciate what "out of contract" means. It's a an indemnity decided by a tribunal for young players(provided we at least offered him a contract) and absolutely f all for those over 25 ; you can't sell them or part exchange them, they're just gone. well I'm not so sure. recalling the prev. cases with Martin Crainie, and Leon Best, where we got about 500K for each of them. Gobern had a good season even though he wasn't a regular, and he's already played more than either of the other two (named) did, I know we (were) L1, but I'd think we might expect twice that 250K or even more. we'll have to wait and see.......
saintscottofthenortham Posted 19 June, 2011 Posted 19 June, 2011 well I'm not so sure. recalling the prev. cases with Martin Crainie, and Leon Best, where we got about 500K for each of them. Best played loads of times in the Championship (and started a Prem game for us once), as did Cranie. Cranie was an England regular in his age group. Gobern has had a handful of appearances in the Champ and League One and a loan spell in League One. On paper, Best and Cranie were worth more than we will get for Gobern. CHAZZA 92 Posted 19 June, 2011 Posted 19 June, 2011 Glad to see him go don't rate him at all especially higher than League 1 but all the best to him!

hughieslastminutegoal Posted 20 June, 2011 Posted 20 June, 2011 Udders official website: Oscar Goburn will dominate league one as his constant skills & running will have the opposition chasing circles for him, Oscar will be our global warrior that will take us back to the premiership. Who writes this crap? Someone similar to those who start "Is NC the best chairman in the leage" type threads.
Saint Luke Posted 20 June, 2011 Posted 20 June, 2011 He might have scored at Brentford, but I was sitting in the home stand behind the dug out and they were constantly talking to him to tell him what to do, he looked absolutely lost. Connolly was asking for him to be taken off. He may well improve but I think at the moment, League 1 is his standard.
Andy Durman Posted 20 June, 2011 Posted 20 June, 2011 So who is the player or players coming to Saints from Hudderfield
The9 Posted 20 June, 2011 Posted 20 June, 2011 So who is the player or players coming to Saints from Huddersfield Oscar Gobern is out of contract, Huddersfield have signed an out of contract player (albeit one we'll get compensation for having trained up in the Academy as he's under 24), why would they be giving us a player when they have no obligation to us ?
The9 Posted 20 June, 2011 Posted 20 June, 2011 He might have scored at Brentford, but I was sitting in the home stand behind the dug out and they were constantly talking to him to tell him what to do. I think that's a good quality for a young player, to be able to take instruction and want to do as the manager says. Football can be a tad over-complicated at times, and it's not like Gobern had a run of games to be able to slot into a regular role - he played a completely different role away to Brighton (very well) the week before as well, hardly surprising he wanted to be told specifics.
Chez Posted 20 June, 2011 Posted 20 June, 2011 Oscar Gobern is out of contract, Huddersfield have signed an out of contract player (albeit one we'll get compensation for having trained up in the Academy as he's under 24), why would they be giving us a player when they have no obligation to us ? there is actually an option for Huddersfield and Saints to agree a compensation fee between them without it ever going to a tribunal, so in affect we could use that fee against the cost of bringing someone the other way.
John Boy Saint Posted 20 June, 2011 Posted 20 June, 2011 So who is the player or players coming to Saints from Hudderfield Anthony Pulis as part of a very convoluted drunken deal done between. 2 chairmen, the rub is trying to ship him back here without us noticing before it's too late!!!!!!
London Saint Posted 20 June, 2011 Posted 20 June, 2011 It doesnt bother me that we are letting Gobern go to Huddersfield. Im not going to lose any sleep over that. What bothers me is that we are SELLING players when we should perhaps be BUYING players?!!
Matthew Le God Posted 20 June, 2011 Posted 20 June, 2011 It doesnt bother me that we are letting Gobern go to Huddersfield. Im not going to lose any sleep over that. Saints haven't let him go. Saints also offered Gobern a contract and he turned Saints down and choose Huddersfield as a better option for his long term career. Probably because he is more likely to get a game and be higher up the pecking order. What bothers me is that we are SELLING players when we should perhaps be BUYING players?!! Saints haven't sold any players this summer. Gobern is out of contract in 10 days time, others like Pulis etc haven't been offered new deals.
Saint Fen Posted 20 June, 2011 Posted 20 June, 2011 For those that saw Gobern at Brentford, no one should shed a tear at this news. Never did anything at all for me (during his sub appearances the lot). Have to agree he was awful at Brentford when he replaced the injured Guly. I don't think he was even on the brench at Plymouth the following game despite scoring (but that was about the only decent time he touched the ball and Lallana put it on a plate). He was ok, nothing special. Couldn't see him playing too much next season so hopefully the move will work out for him.
