moon monkey Posted 18 June, 2011 Posted 18 June, 2011 Eastleigh won't be happy that the pre season friendly is going to be against the under 21's. Last season they weren't happy that the fixture was midweek.
Matthew Le God Posted 18 June, 2011 Posted 18 June, 2011 (edited) Eastleigh won't be happy If they aren't happy, why have they agreed to it again? They would know what they are getting when the friendly is arranged. Every season Saints play Eastleigh it is against the reserves/under 21 development side/under 18's (listed as a Southampton XI side). 2010 for example... Saints: Bialkowski, Saville, A. Martin, Tafazolli, Reeves (Foot 77), Chamberlain (Garrod 60), Robinson, Pulis, Isgrove, Doble, Hoskins. Subs (not used): Forecast, B. Martin. The 1st team, under 21 development squad and under 18's all need their own friendlies in the summer. Edited 18 June, 2011 by Matthew Le God

Last season they weren't happy that the fixture was midweek. You can't prepare for a season's opener against Leeds by playing games against Eastleigh. We have a good pre-season programme this time round so tough luck on Eastleigh.

The Kraken Posted 18 June, 2011 Posted 18 June, 2011 Every season Saints play Eastleigh it is against the reserves/under 21 development side/under 18's (listed as a Southampton XI side). Maybe now, but it wasn't always that way. I went to the game when they beat us 2-1 (2006 maybe?) and we had a near full strength line-up.

Saint_clark Posted 18 June, 2011 Posted 18 June, 2011 Apart from a 16 year old Walcott Which made a mockery of his petulant "these kids simply aren't good enough, let me get on with it" rant after we lost in the cup to Mansfield (?)
The Kraken Posted 18 June, 2011 Posted 18 June, 2011 2005 - and that was under Redknapp where he refused to use the kids at any point. 2006 actually; I found the match report online. http://eastleighfc.blogspot.com/2006/07/eastleigh-2-1-saints.html And Burley was the manager, not Redknapp.

The Kraken Posted 18 June, 2011 Posted 18 June, 2011 Well bugger me. Weird how 2004-2008 have all just kind of merged together... Same website; the 2007 game. http://eastleighfc.blogspot.com/2007/07/six-goal-thriller-friendly-eastleigh-v.html Plenty of first team players in that too. Playing a reserve team against Eastleigh is a relatively new thing.
LGTL Posted 18 June, 2011 Posted 18 June, 2011 Tough sh*t. I hate these local non league clubs thinking they are god's gift. Saints owe them nothing.
Golden Balls Posted 18 June, 2011 Posted 18 June, 2011 I like Eastleigh. My second team. It's mainly because I had a 5 week stint there as a reserve until I got injured and told to basically f off
Crazy Diamond Posted 18 June, 2011 Posted 18 June, 2011 You can't prepare for a season's opener against Leeds by playing games against Eastleigh Exactly. As nice a gesture as it is to go and play at the Silverlake, doing our bit to help local clubs out, it has no benefit for us at all. Decent opposition from now on please. No more first team trips to Norway to play a crap side that will ship 12 goals. Pre-season preparations have to be perfect or else we'll be chasing other teams to get to anywhere near our potential. Look at last season. Good opposition in a former Champions League team (FC Thun) and a strong side in FC Sochaux, but I'm led to believe everything else went wrong. We didn't look our best until we played Bristol Rovers in our fifth fixture.
saintoaks Posted 18 June, 2011 Posted 18 June, 2011 It was part of the Aaron Martin deal that saints played Eastleigh for so many years....didnt say what team they would be playing tho !!
paulwantsapint Posted 19 June, 2011 Posted 19 June, 2011 They will get a better game playing kids who want to prove themselves instead of 1st teamers trying to avoid injury
CLOTH EARS Posted 19 June, 2011 Posted 19 June, 2011 It'll be a good test for these lads to face the 'Mighty' AFC Totton on July 20th! :-)
derry Posted 19 June, 2011 Posted 19 June, 2011 A lot of the Eastliegh players will be the young failed league releasees they are taking on and making full time. Together with some older experienced CS players. So the standard is about right for the reserves.
Saint_clark Posted 19 June, 2011 Posted 19 June, 2011 It was part of the Aaron Martin deal that saints played Eastleigh for so many years....didnt say what team they would be playing tho !! We were playing Eastleigh long before we signed Aaron Martin.

The9 Posted 19 June, 2011 Posted 19 June, 2011 Which made a mockery of his petulant "these kids simply aren't good enough, let me get on with it" rant after we lost in the cup to Mansfield (?) The mockery has happily been made by the kids in the team itself, and the success many of them have had without Redknapp's input. P. Smith - wasn't a kid, but Championship regular for a while not long after M. Cranie - still a Championship regular D. Kenton - hit the skids pre-Saints but no kid M. Mills - a Championship captain and regular C. Baird - a Prem regular and Europa League runner up N. McCann - no kid, basically all but retired on leaving Saints R. Delap - no kid but still a Prem regular now Y. Folly - didn't develop much, League One at best (T. Walcott, 72) - Prem regular and England international N. Dyer - just been promoted to the Prem K. Jones - Prem regular and twice sold for £6m+ D. Blackstock - Championship regular (D. McGoldrick, 81) - Championship regular Subs not used: S. Gillett - Championship regular M. Tejera, A. McNeil - forget them
