Dellman Posted 16 June, 2011 Posted 16 June, 2011 Sorry cancel Ted and Charlie, I didn't read it properly. Interesting that none of the cup winners were 'foreigners'. I'd go for Golac because Marian missed more games than he played, tho' he got unforgettable goals
Badger Posted 16 June, 2011 Posted 16 June, 2011 Golac for me too. Second place is between Pahars,Svenson and Niemi.
egg Posted 16 June, 2011 Posted 16 June, 2011 Easy decision, Golac. Ronnie Ekelund deserves an honorable mention.
Pat from Poole Posted 16 June, 2011 Posted 16 June, 2011 1. Pahars 2. Niemi 3. Ostenstad 4. Lundekvam 5. Coleter (sp) Patrick Colleter did that unforgettable tackle on Poyet, of course. I remember him mainly for this, plus trying to start a fight with the whole of the Notts Forest bench. Proper nutter.
Mr Saints Posted 16 June, 2011 Posted 16 June, 2011 Pahars, so rare for a foreign player to have such a mutual bond with the fans.
Badger Posted 16 June, 2011 Posted 16 June, 2011 Can someone elaborate on why GOLAC was so good for those of us who are to young? Thanks. Golac was played at right back but on form he was a right back-right midfield and right winger combined; he really took control of that side of the pitch and he played some great one touch football with Ball,Channon and Steve Williams. As a defender he was hard,a good tackler and very strong. He would not have been out of place in the 'Alehouse' team in the 60's. He would frquently turn defence to attack . Probably the best right back in my time supporting Saints (late 60's onwards).
HK_Phoey Posted 17 June, 2011 Posted 17 June, 2011 Golac for me. Head and Shoulders above the rest, I guess part of it will always depend on how old you were when you first started going. I was 10 years old when Golac signed and had got my first season ticket in the family centre only the year before so probably influences my decision somewhat. I find it difficult to split between Killer, Niemi, Lundukvam and Pahars, was living overseas by then and whilst we used to get some games on the TV invariably they were when we were playing big four.
Give it to Ron Posted 17 June, 2011 Posted 17 June, 2011 It's all in the name...! It sure is.....he gets better the older I get too.
alpine_saint Posted 17 June, 2011 Posted 17 June, 2011 (edited) 1. Pahars 2. Killer 3. Niemi 4. Monkou 5. Golac Golac doesnt come further up only because my recollections of him are a bit dim-and-distant. Mentions in dispatches (made a big impact/impression but had a down-side) for : Ronnie Ekelund (not here long enough) Hassan Kachloul (turned into a mercenary *****) Eyal Berkovic (was a great player but had serious ego issues) Edited 17 June, 2011 by alpine_saint
david in sweden Posted 17 June, 2011 Posted 17 June, 2011 If your not voting for Ivan Golac, your too young, anyone old enough to remember Ivan will have to agree best foreign import the club has ever had a true legend .....couldn't have said it better myself !
TheMidfieldGeneral Posted 17 June, 2011 Posted 17 June, 2011 It was Golac But then Pahars did this.. :-)
theyin Posted 17 June, 2011 Posted 17 June, 2011 Ivan Golac Without a doubt.... Of his time with Southampton, Golac said: "Beautiful football, beautiful supporters and beautiful days. From day one, from the very first kick, I could sense a connection with the crowd. They were terrific. "There was fire on the park – The Dell was always in flames and a lot of the opponents from London, Manchester and Liverpool just couldn't stand the heat." Couldn't put it better myself. Didn't he wear it well?
lambjo1976 Posted 17 June, 2011 Posted 17 June, 2011 Ivan Golac Without a doubt.... Of his time with Southampton, Golac said: "Beautiful football, beautiful supporters and beautiful days. Nutwood2 Posted 17 June, 2011 Posted 17 June, 2011 Well, i'm old enough to remember Ivan the Terrible and it just has to be Golac. Imagine being a winger and finding yourself up against him and then trying to defend against him when you quickly realised you weren't going to go past him. Magnificent player!!!!
Victor Posted 17 June, 2011 Posted 17 June, 2011 Jimmy Case Are you related - e.g. a suitable Case? (for treatment).
Petersfield Saint Posted 17 June, 2011 Posted 17 June, 2011 Too young for Golac, so favourites(as per thread title) rather than best: 1) Marian 2) Super Ken 3) Egil
markyboy Posted 17 June, 2011 Posted 17 June, 2011 Are you related - e.g. a suitable Case? (for treatment). less of the cheek. Solid no nonense player with a cracking shot. Could have done with a midfield general like him over recent times. Stupid me shouldn't have missed the "foreign" Apolgies!
23rdSaint Posted 17 June, 2011 Posted 17 June, 2011 Marian. Was my boyhood hero and will always be my favourite player of all time. A great player and a lovely guy off the pitch too.
Window Cleaner Posted 18 June, 2011 Posted 18 June, 2011 Ivan Golac Without a doubt.... Of his time with Southampton, Golac said: "Beautiful football, beautiful supporters and beautiful days. Didn't he wear it well? This is absolutely spot on, Golac has been our best foreign player to date by a long shot. The youth of his forum always think that we are overcritical of some of the later players and managers but if you were amongst us at the Dell in the early 80s you would understand it.Saints were magnificent in those days and most of us can't forget it.
Badger Posted 18 June, 2011 Posted 18 June, 2011 (edited) It was Golac I tried looking for that goal by Golac to answer Le Goddard's question earlier about how good he was.Pretty amazing really that as a right back he is in the position of a right winger to take the header from Channon . To bring that up to date for younger supporters that is Richardson or Butterfield being roughly where Barnard was to score the first against Peterboro at St Marys this season.See that happening, with the same quality finish ? No, neither can I. I did find the following Golac clip from his time as manager of Dundee Utd. This was in a derby v Dundee in which he puts a Dundee player on the deck. Legendary status up there as well for that and winning the Cup. Edited 18 June, 2011 by Badger Just watched original clip again.
Kingsbridge Saint Posted 18 June, 2011 Posted 18 June, 2011 Personally, the foreign players that have given me the best memories are: 1. Pahars 2. Killer 3. Egil 4. Claus 5. Belmadi
Strangely Brown Posted 18 June, 2011 Posted 18 June, 2011 Has to be Ivan and does anyone remember the banner at Wembley "Ivan bites yer Golacs"?
John Cool Posted 18 June, 2011 Posted 18 June, 2011 1. Marian Pahars 2. Claus Lundekvam 3. Hassan Kachloul 4. Ronnie Ekelund 5. Francis Benali :-)
The Majestic Channon Posted 18 June, 2011 Posted 18 June, 2011 Alexi cherednik maybe not actually, he was c o c k Golac and pahars for me..possibly eklund too though he was only at saints 5 minutes..
krissyboy31 Posted 18 June, 2011 Posted 18 June, 2011 Although I remember Ivan Golac and Marian Pahars with much affection, the best for me was Ronnie Ekelund. Just a real shame the injury prevented him from reaching his true potential, which was World Class!
Saint Without a Halo Posted 18 June, 2011 Posted 18 June, 2011 Ivan Golac. Needs no explanation. seconded
Edmonton Saint Posted 18 June, 2011 Posted 18 June, 2011 The Legend that was and still is Ander Svensson.
austsaint Posted 18 June, 2011 Posted 18 June, 2011 Jhon Viafara was my favourite. Played with a lot of passion - unforgettable performance in the play offs v Derby a few years back.
Edmonton Saint Posted 18 June, 2011 Posted 18 June, 2011 Obviously I meant Anders Svensson... Not his long lost brother Ander Svensson
