Restaurant awards are often a sign of high-class cuisine.

But this year’s Supreme Winner of a Nelson dine award takes a different approach to prize winning dining.

The Free House encourages customers to bring in their own food.

“We are pretty sure it is the first of its kind in New Zealand, it certainly is here in Nelson,” says co-owner Mic Dover.

“There are no pokies in the pub, we wanted to make it a welcoming environment.”

The Free House has been a hit in Nelson, where people can bring food cooked at home or from another restaurant.

Their website gives a list of ideas of food to bring in, like pizza from a local takeaway store.

Owners Mic Dover

and Eelco Boswijk wanted to focus on beer without being attached to a brewery.

I went to the Cuckoo Inn in Hamptworth once and although they weren't serving food, a fish and chip van pulled up outside and all the locals got their evening meal from it, with crockery and cutlery provided by the pub. Very good it was too. The Hyde Tavern in Winchester operates a similar system - you can get a takeaway and they'll provide the rest. It's an excellent pub in every way - nice atmosphere and a great selection of beers.

I was in a pub in Plymouth about a month ago and for some reason they weren't serving food but they said we could bring in our own, true story...

I was with a group of Saints fans in Ireland a few years ago. We had stopped at a pub/restaurant near to Shannon for a beer or two and the landlord locked up at 1pm to go to the next town for lunch.:?

One of the better pubs in Bedofrd used to allow you to take in food from the local chippie. Changed management recently tho, so not sure if this is still the case.
