Looks like Chamberlain's off then

agreed lets hope he shoots all jornalists up the as* and says my career will be better served by playing every week than sitting in Arsenals reserves

sadly that kind of comment hasn't been forthcoming in recent times from his camp.

His signing is all about getting him before the other big sides get him. If they all know he is going nowhere then there is no rush, but as soon as one club bids they'll all have to join the race. The question is has that race run.

I strongly believe he agreed personal terms with Arsenal the last window and it would be no surprise if he has not done so again. The trouble is that Cortese is holding out for the maximum he possibly can, a value Arsenal or any other club do not share.

I don't see any movement now until the January window, unless either party change their view. For Arsenal that will be down to performances on the pitch and for Cortese that will be the length of contract remaining.

Good spot, £9m up front would suggest we are justified in our massive transfer fee demands, though i'd much rather he stayed!

I get the feeling things will start moving in July, when we roll into our new financial year.

Dont go OXO - you have a great, promising and long future here!

He can't agree terms with them unless we agree a fee first so while he may wish to join them and we might hold out for the biggest fee, then he goes nowehere until NC says so.

Quite.

The reality is none of us know what the hell is going on, but whilst it is not reasonable to expect Chamberlain (or his Dad/agent) to respond to every rumour, it would not be unreasonable to expect him to say once this summer 'I intend to stay at Saints for now'. Instead of which all we have seen are reported statements from his father about wanting him to be at Arsenal asap.

Simlarly the club could say once, he's on contract and is not for sale.

Not encouraging.

More generally speculation about signings is one of the ways that clubs build up public interest and increase ticket sales. I am not convinced Cortese's Swiss banking background has prepared him for dealing with a large customer base, where strict secrecy is not a major criterion for success.

The only way this has gone as far and as public as it has will be because of the conditions of his contract, something similar to Theo's. If a club then comes along and agrees to all those terms there is nothing Cortese can do. If you have any clause which is not water tight or the buying club wish to negotiate, Cortese may demand that maximum immediately, this is where I believe we are at. This type of contract would not stop Oxo agreeing any personal terms on the basis the contract conditions are met.

Now the Sun say that talks are being held between us and Arsenal re A O-C this afternoon. They also mention the money up front with the remainder to be settled later with strings.

Well, these predictions of his impending departure have been rumbling on for the past several months now and nothing has come of them. As there are reportedly several of the very top teams in England after him, it would amaze me if we accepted £6/7 million up front and the remainder later. If we let him go at all, surely we have the whip hand and can tell them to pay everything that we want up front. or else F Off.

He'd be a fool leaving if true.

He can either have professional football week in week out, in a very competitive league. Or reserve and Under 18 football at arsenal, because he'll be nowhere near their first team yet.

Similar to Theo in that he could potentially waste 18 months which could be put to better use...i.e playing!

Don't know if anyone will agree but I think Chamberlain is more promising than Theo was at that age. Granted, Theo played in the Championship for us and Ox has played at League One level, but he has both pace and skill, which for me is a better proposition. So in that case given the ridiculous nature of young English players and their transfer fees, I'd want more than £10 million.

Oh and it annoys me that we're a ****ing feeder team for Arsenal. If you look at their record closely, they produce very few of their own players. They're all nicked at some stage. But I'm guessing we're not much better either...

Selling one player to them, four years ago, doesn't make Saints a feeder club.

You are SUCH a bore. Stop commenting on my posts, its like a fly buzzing round a pile of ****.

Not that my posts are ****. It's a metaphor.

Is it not boring to say things like "Saints are a feeder club for Arsenal", when you have nothing to back that up? Walcott left 4 years ago, with Saints under different management and ownership.

AOC would probably earn more in one 3 year contract with Arsenal than he would in the next 10 years at Saints (unless NC's master plan actually comes off...big gamble though!!). At 18 what would you do? At the end of the day this is his PROFESSION. The signing on fee would probably be more than the average person earns in 10 years! Football is a mercenary game and there isn't one club in the world who doesn't lose players at some stage. Whatever happens, we'll carry on supporting Saints. I would like him to stay, but I don't really care either way, as long as adequate steps are taken to strengthen the team if he does go. Maybe there will be a different "wonder kid" to burst out of the academy stable this year?? There are certainly 2 or 3 outstanding candidates!! (Ward-Prowse and Sinclair spring to mind, although that's only based on what I have read)

I think he has been a 'done deal' for a long while unfortunately!

....and I suspect that maybe we have one or two "done deals " under covers (but not yet publicised by NC) before OK-ing an AOC / Arsenal deal... because then every other club would double their demands knowing that we have transfer money in the bank.

but, but, but, but..What about Corteses vision? Our potential? our catchment area? us being on the up? Theo Walcott not being as good as Messi because he didn't stay with Saints? us playing in the champions league in 2 years with a decent manager and a team of players earning £20,000 a week which all came through the academy and have ignored advances from every other club in the world to stay with us? what about us being the English Barcelona??? there are no reasons for him to leave and every reason for him to stay.......

What gets me is you GENUINELY think I don't know stuff like that. I report on football for a living for ****s sake, not enter numbers next to boxes.

I echo Thedelldays and Hypochondriac. Just shut up.

What a fail.

He left in Jan 2006. That was over 5 years ago. Matt Le God, I am disappointed.

Well then, that is the problem with those that "report on football for a living", they write things like "Southampton are Arsenal's feeder club", even though there has only be one notable transfer in the last 20 odd years between the two sides. It is nothing more than sensationalism, do you write for a tabloid?

You wouldn't have the balls to criticise my occupation to my face, so I wouldn't try and do it here.

Do you actually take everything so literally? Or are you completely oblivious to the fact I was making a passing comment about our best young players going to Arsenal. You probably were. I'm going to ask you nicely - please don't quote me again or comment on my posts. You're incredibly obnoxious and are getting on my nerves. I'd rather you just be quiet.

Lest we forget we signed Scott Marshall & Perry Groves from them, it could be argued they are a feeder club for us.

You attempted to mock something I do in my spare time, so a little hypocritical of you. It is clearly wrong to suggest Saints are Arsenal's feeder club in any shape or form. One notable player transfer in 25 years doesn't really count in any way.

If you are that offended by my posts, why have you gone this long without blocking me?

Notable...??? ;)

Err excuse me, Scott Marshall was a highly rated young centre half when we beat off competition from Preston, Luton and Brentford for his signature, he was hailed a coup. Perry Groves was signed with the Alan Shearer money for £750k, big money in those days. We took all of Arsenals best young players back then, except for Merson, Adams and the others that went onto forge decent careers, we just got unlucky i think........

Yeah, this would be the neat way to play this. Though I guess most clubs probably think we are minted anyway with or without the AOC sale proceeds.
