Looks like Chamberlain's off then

"It has been fantastic helping them to get promoted. But now I feel I’m ready to play in the Premier League.”

:lol::rolleyes:

I guess he gave him a call while out in Switzerland

For all we know he could have said:

"It has been fantastic helping them to get promoted. But now I feel I’m ready to play in the Premier League, and I just know that we've got the ambition and a squad that's capable of getting us there in the next couple of seasons”.

Hack sports journalists are from the same school as the people who write the reviews on film posters!

To be fair I very much doubt any paper would put a quote in from anyone if they didnt actually say it. They would be exposing themselves to a massive law suit if they did.

For what it is worth I think he wants to leave, his dad has been instrumental in brainwashing him and he probably will go. Its just a matter of the right deal coming in.

NC is playing hard ball and for that i am grateful as at least we will get a big fat cheque.

IMO the only reason he will stay is if no one offers anythig close to what NC wants for him.

I take it you haven't had many dealings with the press? I've had some.

If a reporter talks to you on the phone he or she can pretty much make up what they like. Unless you have taped the conversation (like they usually do) how could you prove you didn't say what they claim? They don't usually completely invent, but they do twist and re-interpret. (The reporter won't usually push it too far because he wants you to trust him next time.) The person 'quoted' is then left in the invidious position of having to decide whether to let it go or to make pompous statements along the lines of "that's not quite what I said. I actually said ...." which a) makes him look a ****, and b) gives the whole story even more publicity.

The only ways round this are to talk to no one (virtually impossible), to employ an agent to talk for you (dangerous), or to answer every phone call with a very careful written statement that can't be misquoted (takes huge self discipline and effort). None of these are likely to be in the armoury of a 17 year old football player, with the possible exception of the agent ...which in Alex's case is his Dad , another presumably not very bright, footballer. (To be fair Chamberlain coud be a genius for all I know, but let's face it few footballers are.)

jamesfp1 ...... well thats crap because Sky Sports News actually showed the interview where Alex's dad said he should join Arsenal etc etc it was at some awards dinner or launch or something similar

Sorry mate, I can't see your logic here. Just because his dad has said previously that he thinks he should join Arsenal, doesn't mean that Alex himself actually wants to.

Shame he only has 2 years left really... My main concern is him leaving for peanuts or even on a free in a year and a a half.

If we somehow do the double promotion then he will be in the prem with a year left on his contract. SFC will either have to offer him some serious wedge (if he still looks like he is going to be amazing) or let him go. By then the next crop of youth will be coming through the ranks and the development side of SFC will be fully up and running. Things may look that much better for us by then that he may see a future with us? We could also be struggling by xmas and let him go in Jan. If he goes now or in Jan then I doubt very much he will get a game in the prem this season so he will get there no faster. He will just earn a bit more cash in the time between.

Money alone won't do the trick what he wants (or at least what his old man seems to want) is global recognition.Same as many many other 17 year olds who are moving about the

footballing world for millions of £s. I sometimes get the idea that Theo Walcott is the bench mark, if Walcott did it then Chamberlain Snr wants it for his boy at the same age.

Trouble is Lowe took any deal offered to him but Cortese wants to be considered as a hard man in the transfer market......full payment in advance if you please.

Grauniads take on the saga

http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2011/jul/19/the-rumour-mill-chelsea-arturo-vidal

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has "pleaded with Southampton not to wreck his dream of sitting three rows behind the reserve goalie on some overstocked Premier League bench pocketing £55,000 a week for playing a few inconclusive Carling Cup games next season". Sorry. That should read "his dream of playing in the Premier League next season". Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City are all interested in paying £12m to essentially derail his promising career by stopping him playing any meaningful football in return for demotivating amounts of cash.

I'm sure if he wanted to go he would have to hand in a transfer request and he wouldn't have been on the Pre season tour.

I guess he could hand in all the transfer requests that he wants, wouldn't change the asking price or the terms of payment.Just lose his cut that's all.

lol very true...

he'd be better off staying at a club pushing for the premiership, rather than making 5 or 6 sub apps in the premiership and lots of reserve games.

I'd like to see this concluded soon so we will know whether he's staying or going. I'll guess that if Fabregas goes to Barca, he'll be bought with that money. Would rather he stayed and signed a long term contract with us, but if hes not willing to do that, get rid and reinvest the money.

lol @ all the spin on here. Direct quotes people, these are the words of someone who wants to go.

“It has been fantastic helping them to get promoted. But now I feel I’m ready to play in the Premier League.”

Name me one player apart from MLT who has turned down the chance to play at a top club. Depsite what we all think that he might be better off playing regularly here etc etc, what player isn't going to turn down the chance of playing for a top 4 club. We should let him go, get the best deal possible and spend it on a decent replacement. People need to get their head out of the sand, it doesn't matter what we think he should do, him and his old man will decide. It appears they have both decided he is off to Arsenal. Now Nicola, take as much money as we can get and spend a fair whack of it on a decent young replacement.

Both from the same "journalist". I use the term in its loosest possible sense.

Article says he "jetted off on holiday in the knowledge that he will be confirmed as an Arsenal player on July 1st".

2) July 19th http://www.mirrorfootball.co.uk/transfer-news/Arsenal-Liverpool-Manchester-City-target-Alex-Oxlade-Chamberlain-tells-Southampton-wants-move-to-Premier-League-article772518.html

Article says he "has pleaded with Southampton not to wreck his dream of playing in the Premier League next season".

1) proved to be completely wrong. Why believe 2)?

Now it would seem to me that MLT actually signed for Chelsea or Spurs but the Mrs MLT of the time made him change his mind, probably why he eventually divorced her and wandered off with an Australian Soap star I guess.

Yet more spin. Yet more people confusing realism with negativity. If you want to keep your head in the sand then thats up to you. but it is very, very rare taht when a big, big ie Top 4 club come calling a player turns them down. I'd love CHamberlain to stay but i think he'll go and if that is the case lets get the best deal possible and spend the money on player (s) that do want to be here.

I think he'd be better off staying here as well FWIW, but it doesn't matter what we think, it appears that his old man wants him to go and that now he does. I cant blame him for it either, who wouldn't want to play for a club like Arsenal if you had no personal loyalty to Saints? if you want to spin that as me being negative then thats up to you.

Exactly this. Every other player at sfc knows they want to commit to the cause so make a decision via a press conference to explain you want to be part of the plans at sms. If not make the club 10m(a mental amount considering a season in 3rd tier)and bugger off. If this was to happen it would have been nice to have had it done and some cash invested before the players travelled for pre season.

By people that have been showed to be wrong and make things up. They don't have a clue what Cortese is planning/doing.

All we really know is that Cortese threw Liverpool's faxed "offer" into the bin.So whatever was written on it wasn't convincing enough, tends to indicate that the bar is fairly high.

I've seen Alex play.... and he is a very talented and exciting youngster to watch.

Could he play in Prem.? YES, but a sensible manager will use him selectively and not put him in the start 11 every week.

Will he go...? YES. I think the media pressure will eventually force "someone " to bid and that may start an auction for him.

Will I worry ..? NO. Yes we'll "miss" him, but he hasn't been regular for 3 seasons and there are enough options available.

Is Cortese demanding too much ? NO. Regardless of whether we have the Liebherr billions behind us or not, we don't need to sell and we should get the best deal we can. As far as I can see Cortese is very shrewd in bargaining and £12 mill +50% sell on sounds a good deal for an eventual England player.

The "big six" Prem. clubs throw money around like a man with 4 arms and end up with £20 million foreigners on the bench every season. On that basis...we must get the best deal we can, and not get ripped off AGAIN!

well done Nicola Cortese.

A fair few IF's in this but I think its still fair to say, If he doesnt leave just yet and we do very well next season he could be part of a team that has won the battle back to the prem through 2 tough divisions. His recognition in this could be huge as its a very good achievement.

Walcott is a good example as in the time its take for him to be established (still regularly subbed as Wenger trys to change things to win games) in that top 5 side he has done what exactly? A kid these days being billed as one of the next big things should be aiming to do better than Theo has IMO. Unless all they want is the riches without the recognition of course. Theo still hasnt reached the potential that Arsenal bought and while being a cracking player he still looks like he could be better.

So what would Oxo's thinking be going to Arsenal? Knock Theo out of the team? Or Arshavin? Or Nasri? Is he that good yet? At least Theo had a spell in the championship to prepare him for life on a prem bench. Oxo hasnt even got that yet.

As for Lowe taking any deal offered? He was once known for at least trying to get the best deal possible and 12 mil for Theo was the biggest fee ever for a kid of that age I think. Had he the funds at his disposal that NC has got he could of played even harder ball with buyers. I think his policy on letting any player go that doesnt want to be here and allowing every manager to bring in too much dross is worthy of a kicking but being robbed when selling a player is not IMO.

I think Arsenal will put their bid in when they get the money from Barcelona for Fabregas.

Hopefully, this will be sooner rather than later so that we have the time to get a suitable replacement!

i really don't know if Arsenal are going to put in a bid that will meet with the terms that we (seem) to want. Arsenal are being very pinchpenny at the moment, the Gervinho transfer

got held up because Arsenal and Lille were squabbling over who paid a few quid to the player's formation club (maybe Le Mans or even some Ivory Coast outfit,I don't know). Thing is in a 12 million euro transfer they were squabbling over few quid.Arse are bringing another boy wonder in from Colombia, plus the Spaniard they signed in May and desperately need first team players as well.Think they're signing another young central defender from Belgium or Holland as well, plus Jenkinson (is that it?) from Charlton, all these million quids here and there soon add up,especially when you need a lot of first team reinforcement.

I am not sure if you are intending to be ironic or not here. Reporters make up or embellish most of the 'quotes' you see in newspapers. Nor is there any danger whatsoever of a law suit when they do. First it would have to be proved that something was made up (not at all easy to do) and also that the quote somehow damaged the individual's material interest (also a tricky matter). Making up a quote suggesting that a footballer thinks he is ready to play in the Premier League wouldn't even cause a ripple.

What makes your view so realistic? Because it yours and you know so much more than anyone else?

It is very rare that a player stays with a smaller club when a top 4 club comes in for him. Not negativity FACT.

Think Bridge, Rooney, Henderson, all players playing for clubs they started out with and supported.

If you were a player, from say, London, was playing for a club like Saints but had no emotional ties too, lets say, Leicester, and Arsenal came in for you, offering twice as much money and the chance to play in the top 4 of the premier league, champions league, with a great manager and some great players. What would you do?

Or to put it another way, if you were working for a medium sized local business and a huge corporate offered you at least twice as much money, the chance to work with and learn from the best in their profesion, much better career prospects etc, what would you do?

I know some of you think we are the new Barcelona and on an unstoppable charge up the leagues to the champions league but people need to get a grip. If we can keep him for another season then that will be brilliant and i would love him to and think he'd be better in terms of his development, but all it will do is delay the inevitable. If you want to all bury your head in the sand and think he is going to stay with us out of love for the club and because of Nickys vision then you are extremely naive. Players like Chamberlain move onto bigger clubs. Just like Bridge. Just like Rooney. Just like Henderson. Just like Barry. Just like Ashley Young. Just like Chris Smalling. Just like Phil Jones. The list is endless. FFS ever a club like Spurs are struggling to keep hold of Modric.
